Find a Bible Verse About Love

This is, very simply, a list of verses in the Christian Bible about love, and particularly about God's love. I will list these quotes about love from the New Testament first (in order of where they appear), and then the Old Testament. The verses are from the NIV.

New Testament Love Verses

Matthew 5:44-46: "But I tell you: Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be sons of your Father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous. If you love those who love you, what reward will you get?..."

Matthew 22:36-39: “'Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?' Jesus replied: ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself'."

Luke 11:42: “Woe to you Pharisees, because you give God a tenth of your mint, rue and all other kinds of garden herbs, but you neglect justice and the love of God. You should have practiced the latter without leaving the former undone."

John 3:16: “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.

John 13:34-35: “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”

John 14:15: “If you love me, you will obey what I command."

John 15:12: " My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you."

John 15:13: "Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends."

Romans 5:5: "And hope does not disappoint us, because God has poured out his love into our hearts by the Holy Spirit, whom he has given us."

Romans 5:8: "But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us."

Romans 8:38-39 :"For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons,neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord."

Romans 13:8-10 : "Let no debt remain outstanding, except the continuing debt to love one another, for he who loves his fellowman has fulfilled the law. The commandments, “Do not commit adultery,” “Do not murder,” “Do not steal,” “Do not covet,” and whatever other commandment there may be, are summed up in this one rule: “Love your neighbor as yourself.” Love does no harm to its neighbor. Therefore love is the fulfillment of the law."

1 Corinthians 8:1: "...Knowledge puffs up, but love builds up."

1 Corinthians 13:1-13: "If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. 1 Corinthians 16:14: "Do everything in love."

Galatians 5:6: "...The only thing that counts is faith expressing itself through love."

Ephesians 3:17-19: "...And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, may have power, together with all the saints, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge—that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God."

Ephesians 5:25: "Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her."


Colossians 3:14: "And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity."

2 Timothy 1:7: "For God did not give us a spirit of fear, but a spirit of power, of love and of self-discipline."

Hebrews 12:6: "...the Lord disciplines those he loves, and he punishes everyone he accepts as a son.”

1 Peter 4:8: "Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins."

1 John 3:14: "We know that we have passed from death to life, because we love our brothers. Anyone who does not love remains in death."

1 John 3:18: "Dear children, let us not love with words or tongue but with actions and in truth."

1 John 4:7-8:"Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love."

1 John 4:16: "And so we know and rely on the love God has for us. God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in him."

1 John 4:18: "There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love."

1 John 4:20: "If anyone says, “I love God,” yet hates his brother, he is a liar. For anyone who does not love his brother, whom he has seen, cannot love God, whom he has not seen."

2 John 1:6: "And this is love: that we walk in obedience to his commands. As you have heard from the beginning, his command is that you walk in love."

Revelation 3:19: "Those whom I love I rebuke and discipline. So be earnest, and repent."

Lamentations 3:22: "Because of the LORD’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail."

Hosea 3:1: "The LORD said to me, “Go, show your love to your wife again, though she is loved by another and is an adulteress. Love her as the LORD loves the Israelites, though they turn to other gods..."

Joel 2:13: "Rend your heart and not your garments. Return to the LORD your God, for he is gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and abounding in love, and he relents from sending calamity."

Jonah 4:2: "...you are a gracious and compassionate God, slow to anger and abounding in love, a God who relents from sending calamity."

Zephaniah 3:17: "The LORD your God is with you, he is mighty to save. He will take great delight in you, he will quiet you with his love, he will rejoice over you with singing.”
