The Ghosts Of The Great Chicago Fire
The Great Chicago Fire burned from October 8th through October 10th 1871 and it killed hundreds and left thousands with nowhere to live. There has always been a rumor that the Great Chicago fire was caused by a cow kicking over a lantern but the truth is that no one really knows who or what caused the great Chicago fire of 1871.
Houses and buildings were built to close together and once the fire got started it ended up burning much of the city.
The fire originally started in the barn of the O'leary family and their barn was the first structure to be destroyed by the fire. The first deaths caused by the fire were in the same area. It is still often reported by people that they see a huge fire burning in this area but when people go to look they can find no fire. It may well be the result of a residual haunting where an event happens over and over. It is in this same area along DeKoven street that people often report hearing the screams of female children and they also report smelling smoke. Most of the 300 people who died in the fire died in the first few hours of the fire in the DeKoven street area. By the time the fire was put out more than a hundred thousand people were left homeless.
For many years people have reported seeing people running and screaming fire but no fire is found. Are these the ghosts of people who were killed in the great Chicago fire. Are they still running away from the fire that claimed their lives way back in 1871. This seems to be a residual haunting that is happening over and over again.
Many times through the years when new construction has uncovered signs of the great Chicago fire people have reported seeing the sky lit up with the signs of a fire. But when people try to find the fire no fire is ever found.
