How Complete Unity in Church Would Come About
One Body.....just one.
Jesus Prayed for Complete Unity
Complete unity--Jesus bared his heart when he prayed to the Father for complete unity among believers [John 17]. A chapter after, Jesus was arrested, in Chapter 19 he was crucified, and in 20 he was dead. When a man is about to die his last words would be his most urgent wish. In Jesus' case, it was among his heart's ardent will.
"..I in them and You in Me, that they may be perfected in unity, so that the world may know that You sent Me," [verse 22].
"Perfected in unity." Serious Jesus believers should take this to heart and sincerely submit to God to make this a reality. They'd stop building their own church empires, give up everything, and give leeway to the complete unity of all believers worldwide. How complete did Jesus want this unity? He said, "..that they may be one, just as We are one," [verse 22]. The same unity the Father and Son have is the same unity the church worldwide should have.
Not with Human Effort
Complete unity will never come by human effort. Constantine tried that and he got a semblance of "church unity"--it seemed to work out perfectly because it ended up in peace for all religions--but it wasn't according to God's will. And if pastors of mega churches today try to unite together globally using their own efforts and will, it'll be nothing but another Constantine effort. It can lead to world peace, but not the peace that God gives.
We have to let God do it. Remember how he worked out the freedom of the Jews after the 70-year exile to Babylon? The Jews didn't work it out. It was God who started the move by using Cyrus to get a decree done to rebuild Jerusalem. It was a strange move and one that the Jews never expected. God using a non-Jew? A non-believer?
The move for complete unity in the church should be God-driven. It should happen now, in our times, but it should never be human-effort driven. A thing that is God-driven will look something like this--something unexpected will pop up and force church leaders to give up everything. During Jesus' birth, God moved Caesar Augustus to issue a decree worldwide and forced everyone to go home to their place of birth.
I imagine something like a powerful move of the Holy Spirit in each church leader, creating a vacuum within them, a realization of vanity in all their church programs and activities, and an intense desire to give up everything so God's will can be genuinely done. It will be a spontaneous action, not a result of a decision in church councils or conferences where they meet and decide on the matter and come out heroes applauded by the churches. No more of that.
In this move of God, no one would emerge a hero. No one would become popular.
One after another, like popcorn, we begin to hear about leaders of churches big and small worldwide giving up their titles, denominations, achievements, and whatever it is that hinders complete unity. They grow tired of everything of man and become desperate for God. Denominations and churches get a violent shaking and many of them will hold on to power, thinking that to maintain godly order and restore "God's churches." But there will be churches that will go on seeking God's truth. In the eyes of the world these churches will be in chaos and disorder, but in God's eyes it's the start of genuine church that runs according to his will and power.
The day the Acts church received the power of the Holy Spirit on Pentecost, the world saw it as "drunkenness," or disorder and chaos. But it was a move of God and the Lord saw it as fulfillment of the prophecy of Joel. This intense longing for God will bring churches worldwide together--online and offline--in deep prayer, repenting from years of disobedience (building their own church empires, not God's Kingdom on earth) and asking God for guidance and a major spiritual breakthrough.
Then genuine church apostles and prophets will arise from these churches, appointed by the Holy Spirit. It will be the same as when Saul and Barnabas were "set apart" or appointed by the Holy Spirit for apostleship: "While they were ministering to the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, 'Set apart for Me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.'" [Acts 13.2]. Nothing will be of human effort or decision. In this one, last, and great church revival worldwide, the church will experience first hand the Holy Spirit talking and mingling with them in Person!--something many churches today don't believe in anymore.
Complete Unity Prophesied: How It Will Happen
This was how God prophesied about complete unity in church through Isaiah:
"I will bring your offspring from the east, and gather you from the west. I will say to the north, 'Give them up!' And to the south, 'Do not hold them back.' Bring My sons from afar and My daughters from the ends of the earth, everyone who is called by My name, and whom I have created for My glory, whom I have formed, even whom I have made," [Isaiah 43].
God said, "I will bring your offspring." And, "I will gather them." He himself will do it. These are believers whom God himself has molded and readied to be called by His Name. Then God will form the one glorious church of Jesus Christ out of them--without spot or wrinkle or any blemish but holy and pure (the world will see that there is a perfect church in Christ)--no denomination, no differing church doctrines, no walls of separation. The whole Word of God will be their sound doctrine and will be led by apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors, and teachers worldwide.
God will restore everything in the end-times. We will again see the Acts church in out midst, operating in genuine signs and wonders through the power of the Word of God and the Holy Spirit:
"Heaven must receive him until the time comes for God to restore everything, as he promised long ago through his holy prophets," [Acts 3.21].
It will be an awesome church operating in the spiritual realm!
"His intent was that now, through the church, the manifold wisdom of God should be made known to the rulers and authorities in the heavenly realms," [Ephesians 3.10].
It Starts with a Desperate Longing to See the Real Jesus Glorious Church
It starts with people whose hearts are being molded personally by God. They are now beginning to have that desperate longing to see the glorious church of Jesus Christ Paul talked about in Ephesians 5. 26 and 27:
"..the church in all her glory, having no spot or wrinkle or any such thing; but that she would be holy and blameless."
These people are now living holy lives daily in Christ through the power of the Holy Spirit, solidly deep in the Word of God, and loyal only to Jesus Christ.
Do you have this intense desire to see the Word of God fulfilled in you? Or are you settled on playing church seriously? Gradually, people are longing for the real thing, the genuine move of God. It will be started with people poor in spirit, meek, and totally surrendered to God. God will make it happen along difficult paths, paths most people hate traveling on because they don't seem promising and traveled on only by the weak and despised. God will make it happen along the Narrow Road to life.
" I am making a way in the desert and streams in the wasteland. The wild animals honor me, the jackals and the owls, because I provide water in the desert and streams in the wasteland, to give drink to my people, my chosen, the people I formed for myself that they may proclaim my praise." [Isaiah 43.19-21]
