Spirit Animals & Animal Guides

More and more people want to know the answer to the question "how do you know your spirit animal?" Spirit animals (also known as totems or animal spirit guides) are with us all of the time, everywhere we go and no matter what we do. We have only to recognize they exist, and they will show themselves to us.

That being said, sometimes it is quite confusing for the beginner to figure out which animal is their spirit animal. There can sometimes be more than one in your life, and they could all be in your life for various reasons. But just know that you will always have one totem, a spirit animal that will remain with you for the entirety of your life. Let's learn about how to find out which animal is your spirit animal and totem.

Obvious Signs

The easiest way of which to figure out your spirit animal is to think back to when you were a child. What was your favorite animal? Did you spend countless hours with your dog? Maybe you always had a longing to ride on a horse's back? Perhaps you even sheltered homeless cats or hurt squirrels. If you can answer any of these questions, it is possible that one of these animals is your totem or permanent spirit animal.

Still not sure? You can always ask your spirit animal to identify themselves to you. Realize that you must be open-minded to the signs, and you cannot always expect a grand entrance from your spirit animal. What I mean by this is - don't expect a zebra to show up in your driveway! That being said, sometimes your spirit animal will make a grand entrance, or perhaps they will just give you some very obvious signs.

Those obvious signs could include:

  • seeing that particular animal on the TV constantly
  • seeing that animal in nature (at a distance or up close)
  • hearing someone talk about this particular animal
  • seeing symbols of this animal or seeing pictures in books, etc.

Have you been particularly obsessed with an animal since you were young? Or maybe you've just recently become obsessed with an animal? My friend calls herself a "crazy cat lady" and laughs at the title, though she knows that she is absolutely obsessed with cats. It is more than obvious that this animal is her spirit animal.

Dreams & Meditations

Another way in which to find out who your spirit animal is - through dreams and meditation. As a teenager, I had a dream that I was in a log cabin and that I died in the hallway. A white wolf laid down beside me, and my soul went into the white wolf's body. I became the white wolf. From that moment forward, I knew that the wolf would be my spirit animal for the rest of my life. He is not always in the forefront of my soul's necessary messages, but I know that he is always with me. This dream validated that belief.

Have you had a recurring dream of a particular animal? That animal is most likely your totem or spirit animal. You can also go to sleep at night and ask your spirit animal to appear in your dreams. Or if you would like to give meditation a try, you can ask your spirit animal to come to you during meditation or in a vision. Many times you will find that it is easiest for your spirit animal to show up in your dreams or during visions, as they are in that dimension already.

Another aspect to finding your spirit animal is this - don't be surprised if your spirit animal is totally different than you would have imagined. Sometimes your spirit animal might even be shocking. I know one woman whose spirit animal turned out to be a donkey! But the donkey had some deep, meaningful things to teach this woman and so she figured out why the donkey would be her totem and grew to love it. Also, spirit animals can sometimes be mythological animals: a dragon, a unicorn, a phoenix, even a werewolf!

Even scary animals could be your spirit animal.

Pinoy Witch - Hi! Glad you came back. I think your spirit animal changes depending on what you're going through in your life at the time. For instance, you may have a power animal, a totem animal and such that stay with you your entire life, but a spirit animal might come and go depending on what message God/Divine is trying to give you. So I would pay attention to whatever animal is speaking to you NOW not back then. Hope this helps.

Hi Kitty, it's me again. I read this hub a few months ago and I just wanna say thank you for helping me realize what my spirit animal really is. But I need your sage advice one more time, if you can.

I learned by reading from other hubs and articles about finding one's spirit animal to check the zodiac, some with dreams and like yours, the animal the one feels more drawn to.

I was born in the year of the horse, but I checked the Native American Zodiac as well and I found I belong in the Otter. I'm an Aquarius so I feel more drawn to this water totem than the horse. But upon backtracking my life, I have always been fascinated with Tigers(specifically the White Bengal Tiger). I learned that big cats are all about protection and that's all. Nothing specifics I've found on the white tiger/tigers in general. Just the other day I had a dream I have a tiger as a pet living in our backyard but he just won't listen to me when I told him to get inside his cage. Do you have anything specific on the tiger spirit animal?

However, on several occasions, I dreamt of snakes. One time it was coiling under my bed and it really freaked me out. The other time I had this giant snake(as big as the Basilisk in Harry Potter) as my twin, and I can talk to it but I don't remember the conversation , only that I feel that he was there protecting me. I'm an only child so I found this odd, and what's more interesting is that in my culture, having a snake for a twin is believed to be a sign of good luck. I know I can have several spirit guides but what's your take on this? thank you in advance, always your fan:)

chelsea - Yes, I believe spirit animals bring messages to us and are often confused with animal omens. I don't believe there are any nemesis or anti-spirit animals...animals don't come to us out of ill intent or malice. They just wouldn't come to us...know what I mean? Thanks for the awesome questions! :)

Do you think there is any correlation between these Spirit Animals and animal omens? More specifically, can there be such things and a nemesis or anti-sprirt animal, one that you would avoid?

Sounds like the cat is definitely your spirit animal. But a person can have more than one spirit animal for various reasons and phases in their lives. For me, mine changes quite often depending on what's going on in my life. Hope this helps.

Hi. So. I've got a question; Earlier, I decided to find out what my spirit animal is. I sat down and meditated, asking for my spirit animal guide to show me what they were. After every time I asked, my sisters cat would start scratching at the door until I broke concentration, then he'd stop. I start meditating again and ask, then the scratching would start up again. So I finally let my cat in, and I sat down to mediate again, the cat laid near me, then whenever I asked, the cat made a noise, to get my attention. Does this mean my spirit animal is some sort of feline? I was hoping it'd be a horse, since I've been obsessed with horses since I was young, and sill am... I've never been really fond of cats.

Well KTD, now you have hit me where the heart lives. I am fairly sure that the wolf has been my spirit guide several lives, or at least is in this one and allows my world many connections via it's energy. I actually found an injured wolf in the woodlands of Kentucky many years ago, it had been shot and left to die, it was female and I actually hand fed it water and some meat, then sat with it until it died. I could not help it, I was so far from the nearest town. Out hiking in the Grand Canyon area, alone too. It was such a powerful experience. But my guide ( or whatever we should call it ) came to me as a kid. With it came much of my interest in the arts, the occult, philosophy and it helped me turn my darker childhood self image around, it kinda saved me from becoming a predatory person. Enough said...

For you KTD I will share something very special, my wolfen guide ( for I believe all wolf spirit guides relate to shape shifting, although not the Hollywood lycanthrope style, you know what I mean) told me it's name after my experience with the dying female wolf I found. My wolf spirit guide is named Raven.

Isn't that cool. And on a side note, wolves are very social and love to play, mate loyally, and would be good companions, if you spent enough time in nature to keep them happy. Oh yeah, and wolf spelled backwards is Flow....coincidence? I think not. Here's howling for your great hub honeybee. Keep on Hubbing. Blake4d

how do you ask your spirit animal to show up in your dreams at night so you are for sure that its your spirit animal?

Sarah - Usually animal spirit guides will come in and out of your life, with one remaining the same. Your totem is the dolphin, but the dogs might be showing up in your dreams with a particular message for you. Think about what they are doing in the dreams...and maybe you'll figure out their message. :)

Sarah 3 years ago

Ahhh have no idea what mine may be...especially considering i love all animals. Always been drawn to dolphins since I was a kid, reading up pointless facts about them and all. But also been having a lot of dreams with dogs in them. But I'm afraid of dogs and i've heard that your totem isn't usually an animals you're afraid of? Hmm, what's your thoughts on this?

Thanks for the tips! I haven't tried too hard to distinguish my totem animal buuut I get the feeling that I currently have a lot of spirit animals guiding me. I've been dealing with a lot recently... a hell of a lot! And I have had a handful of animals appear in meditation, dreams, and visions just like you've described. I see them in dreams a lot when I'm in trouble and they help me somehow. I think I might give this a try to try to identify my totem; I have a list of possibilities with animals that I come across repeatedly. Now I'll just have to be more mindful and pay attention! Bet I could learn a lot about myself.

I would meditate on it some more...or ask your animal spirit guide to make itself known to you in a dream. Many times they will come through a lot easier in your dreams than in meditation/trance-work. Let me know how it goes!

that one 4 years ago

Can or .. what if the spirit animal is you? I don't spend much time in nature but every single time I think about it I long for it, and when I asked my spirit animal to show me there was a hilltop with a willow and many many animals I asked a few of them if they're my spirit animal they said yes, then I asked if they're lying they said yes a little bit. And now when I meditated about who might be my spirit guide all I got was.. me..What now?

Thank you so much!! This is really strange, but I had another dream of a horse last night. I walked out side and all the clouds were shaped like horses. It was beautiful. I looked over and saw this amazing white horse. The horse looked at me, turned around, and galloped up into the sky. Before I went to bed last night, I asked if my animal guide would show themselves to me. Do you think this night have been my animal guide?

Miki 4 years ago

Thank you so much! I think I can get some of the messages (I am a sign reader). I think you have a gift as well. Also, when a horse talks to me in my dream it always seems to be a different horse. I think I might have found out what the dreams meant.

What I think my first dream meant: That I'm running from problems, fears....maybe something like that? Or that I might feel trapped, and that I need to break free and show my true spirit? I'm not a hundred percent sure...

What I think my second dream means: I believe that buses in your dream means that you will go on an adventure (not sure though). But I think it means something. I think it means that those talking horses are taking baby steps with me, and that once I figure out each message they'll come back. So when he said hello I think that meant that I have to say goodbye to the old things, and hello to the new ones? I think that's what it means.

What I think my third dream means: Well, the horse that went up to me I already knew. He was Scout. Me and him understand each others feelings, and he puts his full trust in my hands. I can always talk to him, and I feel like I know he understands, and that I can feel as if he replied back to my spirit. So I think that dream meant the bound between me and him, and how we can always turn to each other when in a problem.

My forth dream: This one...I'm almost positive about. When the native painted sky surrounded me and the horse, and we looked like shadows. You know when you're going on a hike or something? and people in the distance look like dark shadowy figures? It was like that, except up close. I think it was showing me my gifts (talents). One of them I found out; communicating with animals. I met these two ladies, and they had two dogs with them. Ruby and Leannie. Leannie was abused as a pup, so was very shy around new people. Leannie walked over and let me pet him, rest on him, and play fetch with him. One of the ladies came up to me and said "You're lucky. I've been trying to get Leannie to do that with me for four years." Another one was when I just got to see Scout again. I went into the field to get him, and he walked over to me, instead of me walking over to him. The last one was when I was at my friends house and they have a cat named Artimes (Art for short). I was sitting in a chair and he jumped and lay on my lap for awhile. Everyone was really shocked and told me that Art only does that with some people. Plus, I know how to speak to animals while petting them. (I have no clue why, it's just something I picked up with being with my cat.)

What I think my fifth dream means: I think it means that I need to take more control, and not let people walk all over with me. And when I stayed on and managed to calm the horse down and have a successful ride I think means that if that I can let people walk with me in my pathway of life, but I cannot let them control it. I'm so sorry that these are long :( I just really needed to share this with you, I want to see what you think. This is sort of my first time trying to see who my animal guide is, so I really wanted to know if you could help me. Thanks :)

Miki - It sounds to me like the horse(s) in your dreams is your primary animal spirit guide. He is showing you different aspects or yourself, and through each dream is trying to talk to give you a message. My suggestion is to really think about the surroundings and symbolism in each dream to figure out what that message is. If this is too vague, the next time you are in a dream with the horse(s), ask him what he wants to tell you. Ask him how you can help him too. Hope this helps. Blessings.

Miki 4 years ago

I don't exactly know what my animal guide is...but I hope to find out soon. Sometimes though, I feel like a brown bear, or white bear, a wolf, and others I feel like a horse. I have also had dreams of horses a lot before. I was even a horse one time in a dream, it was very strange. And in my dreams horses could talked to me sometimes as well. I'll share five of my horse dreams.

My first one: I was a horse at times, and others I was a human. I don't exactly remember what happened, but I do know that other horses around me seemed to be my family members, and I was always running. I was even pulling a care-age at one point in my dream and the horse next to me was my cousin.

My second one: I was on a bus with a few people I used to know, and we went to a stables that I loved. This horse went up to me and said "Hello" and I said "Will we ever meet again?" I don't remember what happened next, but I do know that I had to get back on the bus.

My third dream: I was at my school and everyone was riding horses. I saw Scout, a horse that I dearly love at the stables that I go to. He ran over to me and nuzzled me, then rested his head on my shoulder and said "You really do love me."

My forth dream: Me and a few other people were sitting by this lake, the whole sky was like a native sunset painting that reflected beautifully on the water. People started riding this horse around the shore, and then let me ride. I galloped around happily. Then something strange happened. Me and the horse were surrounded by the native painted sunset . All I could see were our heads that looked a shadow. The horse touched heads with mine and I woke up.

My fifth: This one is my most resent. I was in a car age and steering a horse. The horse started bucking and rearing, and I started screaming. Then it settled down and walked on. Then it spooked again but I was more calm and turned the horse without any problems.

Can you guys tell me if these dreams mean anything?

If I were going to try and determine my "spirit animal" at this time, I would have to say it would be the Wolf. I have been drawn to wolves for many years, and I cannot remember what it was that drew me to them. Now, I cannot get enough of them. I am all about Save the Wolves and things like that. Beautiful and dangerous creatures, to be sure. Even my avatar is of a wolf, named Ohanzee. I did have a dream about wolves and dogs last month, a really odd dream. It could be just dogs in general are my spirit animal. Perhaps I'll try to meditate on it, as suggested. Voted up, useful, interesting, beautiful and awesome!

I didn't realize that a totem could be a mythological creature. Now that I know that, I know exactly what my totem is and always has been! A dragon. I've always loved them, been drawn to them, studied them... my home is filled with figurines, pictures, and books of dragons. My children tell me that they are going to find me a dragon egg some day so that I can have a real dragon of my own ~ oh, I wish!

Animals totems are worshiped in Hinduism and Buddhism. Hindu Gods have time and again reincarnated as animals.

According to the Buddhist World View, there are three dispositions hierarchically arranged. Lowest is the animal disposition and the highest is the divine disposition, and human disposition straddles between these two.

I have never considered about my Spirit Animal. But after reading this hub, I'm intrigued to know the animal in me.

Kitty -

This was mentioned the other day when I commented on the emerald boa. It immediately created a curiosity, so I found a test and took it. Yes, the results can be entirely opposite from what one would imagine, as you state. Instead of a snake or cat, both of which I've owned forever, or even a horse, as is my Chinese sign, I am 58% wolf, 26% Eagle, 11% Deer, and 5% Bear. I never would've guessed it. I'm a Heinz 57 mix!
