How Would You React to Jesus?

Jesus found John at the Jordan River and asked John to baptize him. People who were there claimed that John said that Jesus was the Son of God! Blasphemy! Everyone knew there was only one God! You were shocked and appalled at such a claim. What had happened to that nice young boy you knew?

The next three years passed so fast! Jesus began to preach to crowds of people all over the country. One day he was in Nazareth and the next day or so found him in Samaria. Word trickled back to Jesus hometown and you, his neighbor, wondered how such things could be possible. Jesus had been so ordinary when he was growing up next door! Now people said he healed sick people. Even the blind were given back their sight! How could this be possible? People began to worship Jesus and others were shocked! Then the priests turned against Jesus and brought him to trial. He was beaten unmercifully and killed on the cross!

Then Jesus came back to life. He was seen by so many people. You wanted to see for yourself so you joined the crowd who followed Jesus to the Mount of Olives. He was alive! He was speaking to the crowd. How could this be possible? You watched with everyone else as Jesus slowly rose into the clouds and disappeared. Five hundred people stood on the Mount of Olives that day! Five hundred people heard Jesus command them to go back to the Upper Room and wait for the promise of the father to come.

You walked back home while some rushed to Jerusalem and the upper room. What had happened? Could Jesus really be the son of God? Really?

No More Shame

No one spoke of the shame any more. Mary was a respectable housewife who raised her children in the admonition of the Lord. Joseph was the head of the house and his children, including Jesus, were taught the commandments of the Torah. He was a mischievous boy like his brothers. He worked hard and learned to be a carpenter like his father.

The years passed and you watched your neighbor grow into manhood with a love for the Law of Moses. He was a happy young man. Then something happened on his thirtieth birthday. Jesus sought out his cousin John who was something of a wild man. John lived in the wilderness and preached that the messiah was coming at last. He was provocative and controversial. No one knew what to make of him.

The Baptism of Jesus Christ

The Beginning of Jesus' Ministry

What would be your reaction if you heard about a man who could raise the dead, heal the sick with a word, or cast out devils with only a word? Would you be skeptical when this man gave you to understand that he was God? Would you believe?

Imagine your reaction if you had lived in Galilee or Nazareth when Jesus began his ministry... Perhaps you lived next door to Joseph and Mary with Jesus and his brothers growing up like all children. Everyone in the village knew the story of how Mary had been with child before the birth of her son Jesus. Joseph had taken Mary to be his wife in spite of her shame. Joseph gave Mary the protection of his name even though she had betrayed her betrothal vows.

The Birth of Christianity

The coming of Jesus Christ was prophesied in the Old Testament Book of Isaiah 7: 13 Then Isaiah said, “Hear now, you house of David! Is it not enough to try the patience of humans? Will you try the patience of my God also? 14 Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign: The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel.

Isaiah 9: 6 For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

The events that brought about Christianity were amazing. Would you believe if you knew Jesus personally? Would you accept him as God? Thomas was one of Jesus’ disciples who refused to believe without seeing the scars in his hands and feet. It is very easy to condemn Thomas for his unbelief. But would you be as doubtful? Jesus blessed those who believed without seeing the scars.

John 20: 29 NLT Then Jesus told him, “You believe because you have seen me. Blessed are those who believe without seeing me.”

The Holy Spirit Comes at Pentecost Acts 2

2 When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. 2Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. 3 They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. 4 All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.

What About Faith?

Hebrews 11: 1 Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. 2 For by it the elders obtained a good report. 3 Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear.

2 Corinthians 5: 5 Now the one who has fashioned us for this very purpose is God, who has given us the Spirit as a deposit, guaranteeing what is to come. 6 Therefore we are always confident and know that as long as we are at home in the body we are away from the Lord. 7 For we live by faith, not by sight.

Mark 16: 17 And these signs will accompany those who believe: In my name they will drive out demons;they will speak in new tongues; 18 they will pick up snakes with their hands; and when they drink deadly poison, it will not hurt them at all; they will place their hands on sick people, and they will get well.”

Belief in Jesus Christ Requires Faith

Every believer today has taken the story of Jesus Christ on faith. No one alive can testify about what actually happened during these events. Because we have no personal experience. I wonder what people would believe if this exact sequence of events were played out before us today. Would you believe that Jesus is God? Technology places the world in our living rooms. We are skeptical and doubtful. We understand that things can be made to seem real that are not.

I am a believer. I have no doubts. And yet, I wonder about those long ago witnesses who had to accept the reality that the God of heaven was walking among them. It must have been mind boggling and overwhelming. It definitely was humbling. I wonder what choice would I have made if I had been standing in the crowd on that long ago day. I hope it would have been the right one.

The End of the Age

Some people believe that we have come to the End of the Age as Jesus taught in Matthew 24. What do you believe? Would you have believed in Jesus if you had lived them? Do you believe now? Our world is in trouble. War is rising on every side. The Middle East is in flames and getting more dangerous every day. Even Islam teaches that the end of the Age is near. Serious talk. What do you believe? You can i more with Irvin Baxter Ministries called, "The End of the Age.'" John Hagee is an excellent prophetic teacher.

I can only wish I was born during the time of Jesus and living next door to him. I would have become one of His apostles in a heartbeat.

Ah, Faith, so simple yet so unexplainable.

It belies it's strength in our hearts and minds,

seems like a small thing until put to the test.

Faith, it can move a mountain.

God moves in mysterious ways.

You wrote a heartfelt hub. He did say,"When I return, shall I find faith?" Who would recognize him? Probably not many more than he started out with.

Thank you, Ann. During this holy season it seems appropriate to meditate on the scenes and people who were most closely involved or watchers of the life of Jesus Christ. Their thoughts and actions offer insight to us today. Blessings!

This is an excellent life altering hub, Smireles! It's so interesting because at church some parts of your hub were touched on. Like imagine the thoughts racing through the heads of those who crucified Christ and suddenly He's alive three days later!

Good job and I definitely will try to by God's grace to live everyday as if Jesus were coming!

Really beautiful. Thank you. I suppose the best lesson, then, is to treat each and every person as though they were Jesus. You know, just in case. :-) Something tells me we would be well on the right track!

Thank you, Tom. It is hard to tell which scenario is more difficult for having faith.

DeBorrah, Jesus said, My sheep know my voice. I have been waiting a long time for the Lord to descend from heaven with a shout. It is the hope of my heart! Blessings!

Smireless, Nice hub! This was quite interesting as well as thought provoking! It really puts you right there amidst the culture...

But I really believe if Jesus were to come today there is no doubt that I would recognize Him! The Lord has given us the gift of His Holy Spirit! I believe that I would experience along with many others an undescribable connection... I also know that when He does return He is going to "descend from heaven with a shout;" all of us who believe will see!

Thank you for sharing, Blessings!

I agree faith does seem easier in our situation. I hope if I lived back then I could have had faith back then, but who really knows. Much too oftem familiarity breeds contempt. That would be tragic.

It is interesting to consider and as you said, thought provoking. I find it hard to imagine because I tend to look very carefully when people try to convince me of something. Thank you for your comments, UlrikeGrace.

Smireles, interesting hub...it is always a challenge to think what 'would' I have done. We can make some guesses based on our reactions to similar things in the past...but until we are really in that situation we just don't know. We may yet have to make choices that run against the grain of popular thought. I pray that Holy Spirit would enable me to make the right choice then.

Thought provoking...what would I do? and What will I do?

Blessings to you

Smireless, A very well written hub. I know one thing I wouldn't need all this alternative medicine I've been researching and writing about if I was healed by Jesus. I would like to be in the crowd.
