What Quran Says About Mariam Marry - Mother of Jesus

Quran says about Mary (Marium) that She is one of the most respected woman. According to Quran Mary is considered to be one of the most righteous, chaste, noble and highly regarded women in the history of the universe. Mary was the only woman that has been mentioned by name in the Holy Quran. The other woman which was mentioned by name in Quran is Bilqees.Quran mentions the name of Mary on more than 30 occasions when the facts about Mary were mentioned, hence it could be said that she was mentioned in Quran more than the entire New Testament.

Quran says that Mary was neither a divine nor a prophet but a chosen lady, as mentioned in Quran:-

"And when the angels said: O Marium! surely Allah has chosen you and purified you and chosen you above (all) the women of the world."

A Chapter of Quran (Surah) is named after her name i.e. Surah Mariam. The Jesus was mentioned as "Son of Mary" on number of occasions in Quran. For example, in Surah Bakarah, the Jesus is mentioned as under:-

................. and We gave unto Jesus, son of Mary, clear proofs (of Allah's sovereignty), and We supported him with the Holy spirit.........(02:87)

Names of May's father and mother were Imran and Hanna respectively. They vowed that if the God blessed them with a son, they would dedicate him to the service of God. However, by the will of God, they were blessed with a daughter who was named Maryum (Mary). This incidence was narrated in Quran as under:-

And when she was delivered she said: My Lord! Lo! I am delivered of a female - Allah knew best of what she was delivered - the male is not as the female; and lo! I have named her Mary, and lo! I crave Thy protection for her and for her offspring from Satan the outcast.

The girl, Mary was dedicated to the service of God and she grew up under the supervision of Zachariah. Hadrat Marium (Mary) always remained busy in praying and prostrating in her chamber. Hazrat Zachariah used to lock her chamber when he went out, but when he entered the chamber, he found provision (meal, fruits etc) by her side. This aspect is elaborated in Quran as under:-

"Right graciously did her Lord accept her: He made her grow in purity and beauty: To the care of Zakariya (Zachariah) was she assigned. Every time that he entered (Her) chamber to see her, He found her supplied with sustenance. He said: "O Mary! Whence (comes) this to you?" She said: "From Allah: for Allah Provides sustenance to whom He pleases without measure."

Regarding birth of Jesus, Quran says that it was a miracle from God to show his glory that His authority is not bound to the sources. He can cause birth without indulging a man. So the Mary was a virgin mother. The facts about of the birth of Jesus is described in the Holy Quran as under:-

And make mention of Mary in the Scripture. When she withdrew from her people to an eastern chamber, and choose seclusion from thine, and we sent Our Spirit unto her, and it assumed for her the form of a perfect man. She said: Behold! I seek refuge in the Beneficent One from thee if thou art God fearing (begone from me!). He said: I am only a messenger of your Lord that I may bestow upon you a holy son. She said: How shall I have a son when no mortal has touched me, and I am not unchaste. He said: So(shall it be). The Lord sayeth: It is easy for Me, and We shall make him a sign unto mankind, and a Mercy from us. And it is a thing decreed. And she conceived him, and she withdrew with him to a far place. (10: 16-22).

On the birth of Jesus, Mary has had to face severe opposition and harsh words from her people, as narrated in Quran:

And Mary came to her people with him, carrying him (with her). They said: O Marium! surely you have done a strange thing. O sister of Aaron! Thy father was not a man of evil, nor thy mother a woman. Then she pointed to him. They said: How can we talk to one who is in the cradle, a young boy? He (Jesus) said: Surely I am a servant of Allah; He has given me the Book and made me a prophet; And He has made me blessed wherever I may be, and He has enjoined on me prayer and poor-rate so long as I live; And dutiful to my mother, and He has not made me insolent, unblessed; So peace is on me the day I was born, the day that I die, and the day that I shall be raised up to life (again).Such was Jesus, son of Mary: (this is) a statement of the truth concerning which they doubt. It is not befitting to (the majesty of) Allah that He should beget a son. Glory be to Him! when He determines a matter, He only says to it, "Be", and it is.

The people were stunned to hear these words from the mouth of an infant, and they became sure that Hadrat Maryam/ Mary was chaste and pious and that the newly-born babe was an exalted person of God. Since this day she is called the holy Mary.
