Is It The Light Or The Dark?

We know change well
And we are never prepared
So we fight
Because all we are is scared

I once loved light
And made myself dark
Now I love dark
And make myself light

We change our minds
Because we can’t decide
We cling to our beliefs
And behind them we hide

I once loved light
And made myself dark
Now I love dark
And make myself light

We were taught once
But did we listen?
And what did we learn?
Was the truth missing?

I once loved light
And made myself dark
Now I love dark
And make myself light

Are you still a child?
Playing a child’s game?
Pretending to be grown
Is your life the same?

I once loved light
And made myself dark
Now I love dark
And make myself light

Is the truth in darkness
Or is it in light?
You must not be afraid
Of what you find at night

I once loved light
And made myself dark
Now I love dark
And make myself light

For what you know
May be the light
Or is it the dark?
Do you know which is right?

I once loved light
And made myself dark
Now I love dark
And make myself light

What do you protect?
Mistakes and ignorance?
Can you open your mind
Will you take the chance?

I once loved light
And made myself dark
Now I love dark
And make myself light

There are messages being sent
From your past and your present
Parents, church, television
Do you know what is relevant?

I once loved light
And made myself dark
Now I love dark
And make myself light

Do you justify yourself
Or do you validate?
Can you change?
Are you what you ate?

I once loved light
And made myself dark
Now I love dark
And make myself light

Did you eat willingly?
Or know you were being fed?
You thought of free will once
While you were lying in bed

I once loved light
And made myself dark
Now I love dark
And make myself light

And you believe it is yours
As you rise each day
But can you control
What you cannot slay?

I once loved light
And made myself dark
Now I love dark
And make myself light

As the earth moves
Where goes your mind?
Can you see in the dark
Or does the light make you blind?

I once loved light
And made myself dark
Now I love dark
And make myself light

Beautiful words of poetry. This is the true poetic rhyming of words. I marked you up!

suburban poet Your poem touched me. I really enjoyed reading it. My heart was stirred and what came up was good and evil. Many times one does not know the good news from the bad news. Many times one is deliberate and considers bad news, good news. All in perspective. Today for me, I choose the Light, I am concrete on that one. When I heard the truth I made a choice. The Lord is the Light. I was in the dark wanting to be in the light, believing I was for many years, yet I was lost! Now forgiven and made new in Christ. Thank you for the read, I love it. Skye

Thank you Nan and skye2day! I truly appreciate your comments. This poem is probably a classic example of how I work. The orginal title was, "Which Way Is Up?" but that was taken already on Hubpages. Now for the background... I used to be a lifeguard and worshipped the sun. But years later (or seen another way, five years ago) I came down with Melanoma. Luckily it was a "thin" case and I'm alright. But since then I have had to avoid the sun. I'm probably a little more cautious than necessary but you know the cliche about being safe versus sorry. So the other day I was walking in our parking garage at work and thought about change and how I was now living "in the shadows" whereas before I was living "in the light." It doesn't mean I'm good or bad but that I was able to make the change and thrive. It seems that change is tough on everyone and I'm no exception but I have made the adjustment. Anyway then in classic Mark (I'm Mark!) segue fashion it turned into a discussion about how right and wrong can come in different forms and it's not always obvious. You just have to "see it.". Hope that makes sense.
