Is There Hope For The World?
Some would say there are those possessed of evil....
Hitler, Stalin, Mao, who is next?
There have been wars throughout my lifetime, and mankind has seemed to find no solution for finally preventing them once and for all.
That apparent failure.... to realize that reason fails where hatred, greed, and a lust for power at any cost begins....places all of mankind at risk in a world where the power to destroy mankind and civilization as we know it now exists.
Add to this the reality that old animosities and real hatreds persist, and we see a volatile mix which is waiting for ignition.
Chinese and Japanese, Muslims and Jews, Serbs and Croatians, Hutus and Tutsis, Irish and English, Southern and Northern Sudanese, Shiites and Sunnis, some deep-seated wounds are incredibly slow to heal and leave visible scars and stories passed down to following generations. Cultures of revenge, war with doctrines of forgiveness, and tears seem endless.
The League of Nations failed despite the incredible carnage of World War I which gave it birth. The United Nations, founded as it was in the similar revulsion over senseless deaths caused by World War II, is similarly weak when it comes to intervening to stop incredible slaughters of innocents at the hands of their own governments.
While freedom from fear, and hope for the future seem universal in the nature of man, there is the dark side to that same nature. The best and the worst struggle for control of our being, and no laws have yet been fashioned and enforced to control the worst and secure the best as guarantee of man's happiness.
Even religions which should by rights be expressions of the highest values of mercy, compassion, and love, are perverted to pit believer against believer, as if even the best of those expressions of what should be eternal values are not lasting or good enough.
There is hope, even in the darkest hours, but is the hope a false illusion? Is man his own worst enemy, and is he indeed not only capable but one day conceivably ready to fashion his own extinction?
Even a rabid dog would not be termed insane, but man is the creature we already define as sane or insane. Can there one day be someone so foolish or insane that, if he or she cannot have it all, they would just as soon take us all down with them?
If it is true that "Absolute power corrupts absolutely," is the first law of self-preservation to never allow anyone to have absolute power? And, if so, who decides that one day someone, or some group, might be getting too much?
