Is There Hope For The World?

Some would say there are those possessed of evil....

When and why must we suffer the next Hitler, Stalin, Mao, bin Laden? Or do we already suffer them here and now? But why?

Hitler, Stalin, Mao, who is next?

There have been wars throughout my lifetime, and mankind has seemed to find no solution for finally preventing them once and for all.

That apparent failure.... to realize that reason fails where hatred, greed, and a lust for power at any cost begins....places all of mankind at risk in a world where the power to destroy mankind and civilization as we know it now exists.

Add to this the reality that old animosities and real hatreds persist, and we see a volatile mix which is waiting for ignition.

Chinese and Japanese, Muslims and Jews, Serbs and Croatians, Hutus and Tutsis, Irish and English, Southern and Northern Sudanese, Shiites and Sunnis, some deep-seated wounds are incredibly slow to heal and leave visible scars and stories passed down to following generations. Cultures of revenge, war with doctrines of forgiveness, and tears seem endless.

The League of Nations failed despite the incredible carnage of World War I which gave it birth. The United Nations, founded as it was in the similar revulsion over senseless deaths caused by World War II, is similarly weak when it comes to intervening to stop incredible slaughters of innocents at the hands of their own governments.

While freedom from fear, and hope for the future seem universal in the nature of man, there is the dark side to that same nature. The best and the worst struggle for control of our being, and no laws have yet been fashioned and enforced to control the worst and secure the best as guarantee of man's happiness.

Even religions which should by rights be expressions of the highest values of mercy, compassion, and love, are perverted to pit believer against believer, as if even the best of those expressions of what should be eternal values are not lasting or good enough.

There is hope, even in the darkest hours, but is the hope a false illusion? Is man his own worst enemy, and is he indeed not only capable but one day conceivably ready to fashion his own extinction?

Even a rabid dog would not be termed insane, but man is the creature we already define as sane or insane. Can there one day be someone so foolish or insane that, if he or she cannot have it all, they would just as soon take us all down with them?

If it is true that "Absolute power corrupts absolutely," is the first law of self-preservation to never allow anyone to have absolute power? And, if so, who decides that one day someone, or some group, might be getting too much?

Unfortunately your statement"There is hope, even in the darkest hours, but is the hope a false illusion? Is man his own worst enemy, and is he indeed not only capable but one day conceivably ready to fashion his own extinction?" rings true. Our government has already been at work not only creating the biological agents that can murder millions, they have been systematically releasing these agents in out air and foods. There is a disease known as Morgellon's Disease that is spreading this country rapidly and is a man made pathogen released via man made "nano bots." These bots and the pathogens have been documented in thousands of people and of course are denied by the medical community and the Govt.

Is there hope? I would hate to think we had no hope in life. However what is happening around us is fairly scary. What is the solution? Thanks for writing this very eye opening hub.

The only hope lies in rational leaders facing reality, not wishing that things turn out ok, unlike Neville Chamberlaine. Remember, Hitler was elected democratically. People hoped that he would really moderate his views. Evil really does exist in the world and it seems to be on the rise. The killing of innocents is becoming a sport.

rfmoran: So was the killing of the herds of bison in America. Same sport? Same outcome.

Well this was scarier than any horror story I've ever read because this is reality. I don't know what will happen eventually but I would like to think that there may still be hope for this world perhaps through some form of divine intervention?

Curiad: the cycle of "faithfulness leading to prosperity leading to greed leading to a falling away leading to war leading back to faithfulness" seems eternal. But it changes each time it reaches the "war" stage. Each war is more violent than the previous one, and it is not difficult to imagine a war so violent that it becomes a part of the final cycle.

carol7777 : The solution? Come to our senses and fashion a lasting peace. For some years America has followed the idea of "Peace through strength." We fear even a United Nations with too much power, so we allow it to have too little. Fear itself is weakness. We say we don't want to be the world's policeman, but perhaps the world needs enforceable law and order.

Gypsy Rose Lee: how the cycle (above) ends is a choice man must make. We can be our brother's keeper, or our brother's killer. The right choice should be obvious, but apparently it is not. Someday perhaps it must be the correct choice.

I agree that "man is man's own worse enemy". As long as there is greed, there will be wars.

I wish the United States would just take care of it's own people, and stop meddling in other countries problems.

This is a great Hub with a lot of common sense.

I voted it UP, etc/ and will share.

mary615 - W are hopefully making it all the way through another crsis, but ISIS, Syria, Ukraine, Malaysian Airlines, Iraq, ethnic cleansing, all reinforce the existence of these threats to hope and common sense.
