One of the last and final Prayers of Jesus

What would you pray for if it was your final days on earth?

Part 1- a look at a final prayer in John 17

Most people are familiar with the passage in Luke 11 where Jesus' disciples asked Jesus to teach them to pray. This prayer is recited all over the world- it has become known as "The Lord's Prayer".

There is another prayer in the gospels that we don't hear as much about. It is the prayer that Jesus prayed just before he was crucified. What exactly was this prayer and what does it mean for us today?

Imagine for a moment that it was your last days on earth. You are told, "tomorrow you die"! What would you do? In John 17 what we see Jesus do is pray. If you were going to pray for those you loved, knowing it would be your last prayer, what would you ask for?

Would you ask that someone be healed? Would you ask God to bring a loving spouse to your son or daughter? Or perhaps you would ask for a solid education and financial future for your children? Maybe you would pray for someone you cared for to find love or friendships. All of these things are important to us. The list could go on and on.

So what did Jesus, the Son of God, pray for- for us, the ones he loves- in those final hours?

Let's read the passage found in John 17 (NIV version) CLICK HERE TO READ

As we read this we see first that Jesus reinforced what it meant to have eternal life and why he came. Furthermore, He was saying these things for our joy. He prayed very specific things of us, for very specific reasons.

  • Protect them

  • Sanctify them with truth

  • Bring them to complete unity

  • Fill them with God's love

We will pick back up in part 2 what the implications of these 4 things are.

Pray that God will show you what this prayer means for you today.

I really like this prayer - I love the bridge it builds between Jesus, the disciples and us.

That was not Jesus final prayer.

His final prayer was: "Father forgive them, for, they know not what they do? It was in this prayer to the Holy Father that the sins of all mankind are erased and forgiven.
