Top Ideas and Ways To Make Your Baby Dedication Service Special for You and Your Child
I've had four children and they are such a blessing in my life. There was a time in my life after having miscarriages that I wondered if I'd ever be a mother. I realize now, more than ever, that children are such a gift from God.
What greater way to acknowledge to God my gratefulness for His blessings than to give my children back to Him? After all, they really belong to Him anyway. He has loaned them to me to raise and what a great responsibility that truly is.
The dedication services of my children were always a big deal to me. I am a person of faith and I want the same for my children. I realize that just because my children have such a service does not automatically ensure that they will share my faith, but I'm letting God have control of that by giving them to Him to protect. He then in return guides my steps that I may lead them in the right direction. That is what this service signifies.
A little over a month ago, I dedicated my fourth child. I'm going to share some of the tips I've used with my children that made the day a very special memory and landmark for us.
1. Invite Family and Friends
This is such a special time and you'll want all those you love and who love your baby to be there. After you have arranged with your pastor the perfect time, give loved ones a call so they'll have plenty of time to make arrangements.
Examples include: grandparents, (on both sides), aunts, uncles, cousins and family friends.
2. Pick a Cute Outfit
This is a monumental day for you and Baby so you'll want the baby (or child) to look his/her best. Satin outfits, suits and ties or silk dresses are just a few ideas. You'll want to keep the outfit as a keepsake so don't feel too bad for spending a little extra for something that Baby will wear just once. A great place to find good deals on dedication outfits is on eBay. (Hint: Search under christening outfits or baptism outfits).
3. Write a Letter or Poem to Your Baby
This was always one of my very favorite things to do at our dedication services. You'll have a lot on your mind and on your heart on this special day. You'll have hopes and dreams for your child and you'll have important things that you'll want them to know someday. Write these things down in the form of a letter and read it or have it read during the dedication service. After the service, tuck it away in a safe place so that you can share it with your child when he/she is old enough to understand.
4. Involve Family
Ask your pastor if it would be ok to involve Baby's loved ones in the service. Examples might be: Have the grandparents to stand and share what's on their heart, have Auntie sing a song, or have cousin to read a poem. If you're blessed to have a minister in the family like I do, your pastor may even let him/her perform the actual blessing.
5. Record the Memories With Pictures an/or Video
You won't want to forget any moment of this special day so designate someone to take photographs and video of the service so that someday your baby can take part in the special day as well. After the service, have pictures taken with family members and the pastor.
6. Choose a Great Song (or Two)!
This was another of my favorite parts of the service since I love music. Music is a great way to set the mood and to express your heart. I always picked two songs that meant a lot to me and had them played over the speakers or had a loved one sing them for me. The video to the right is one of the songs that I used in my newest baby's dedication. My sister sang it for me.
7. Make A Program
Make a program that has the order of the service. Other things that you may want to include on it is:
- Baby's birthday and birth info (weight, length, etc)
- The lyrics to the songs
- Names of parents, siblings, grandparents, aunts, uncles & cousins.
- A picture of the baby
8. Dedication Certificate
A dedication certificate is a wonderful way to commemorate this special day. Your pastor will more than likely provide one for you but if not you can pick one up real cheap at a Christian book store. These make great additions for the baby book or even look really nice framed for the nursery!
9. Celebrate With a Meal
Food always has a way of making a day special and drawing family together. After the service, have your family get together for a potluck. This makes for great memories and will give the family a chance to be with the baby and give gifts if desired.
