Maxims For Our Children: A Look at The Teachings of Jesus, The Christ
This is a continuation of the Sermon on The Mount. The Wise One continues to teach his two children.
Kanya: (reading). “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.” St. Matthew, 5:8.
Wise one: “My children, the saints tell us that purity is the lily of all virtues. A pure heart is God’s very life-breath, and opens the door to God’s ever-flowing divinity or His Grace. That is why our Lord lays so much emphasis on it. Without inner purity, we cannot reach God. The Christ reminds us here:
‘Not that which goeth into the mouth defileth a man; but that which cometh out of the mouth, this defileth a man … for out of the heart proceeds evil thoughts….” Ibid. 15:11, 19.
Wise one: “The great psalmist David knew this so well: ‘Have mercy on me, O God,’ he said. ‘According to Thy loving kindness: according unto the multitude of thy tender mercies. Blot out my transgressions. Wash me thoroughly from mine iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin.” Psalm 51:1, 2.
‘Purge me with hyssop’ he continues, and I shall be clean: wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow”. Psalm 51:7.
Junior: “I guess he wanted to be free from his wrong-doings, weaknesses and faults, so as to draw him closer to our Lord.”
Wise one: “Yes. My son. I am glad that you have understood.”
Wise one: Junior, sing me a song. You are my favourite singer. You sing so well!”
“Come, come, my celestial Friend.
Come to me and dance in my heart.
Soothe my sorrows, by pouring
Your Fast-flowing nectar in my Soul.
O my Beloved, do conquer my vale of tears
With Your ever-compassionate smile.”
Wise one: “Marvellous, my son, marvellous. Your singing has stirred my heart and my soul is dancing with glee.”
Kanya: “Shall we continue, daddy?”
Wise one: “Yes, my daughter, go ahead.”
Kanya: (reading) “Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.” St. Matthew, 5:9
Wise one: “Those who are truly peaceful do not need to speak much, for God speaks in and through them. A city on a hill cannot be hid, and a tree that is well nourished will bear good fruits. So too, the peaceful walk in the world, radiating love, and influence all those that they come in contact with. They are truly the children of God.
‘Let your light so shine before men’ says our Lord, ‘that they may see your good works and glorify your father, which is in heaven.” Ibid 5:16.
Junior: “Thank you, father.”
Wise one: “Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” Ibid, 5:10
Wise one: “There are many who have made sacrifices for God. Their only crimes were to love and serve God. But they were misunderstood, are being misunderstood and will continue to be misunderstood as long as this world of ours contains darkness. Yet, for these men and women of God, there is no such thing as sacrifice. Their only focus is to lead a godly life; to love God and to do His Will as dictated to them from within. Naturally, God will meet them with open arms.
Kanya: “So their godly road is long and tough, but their reward is great in God’s kingdom.”
Wise one: “Perfectly so, my child. You have understood me very well.”
Kanya: “It is your love and wisdom, daddy, that is making it so clear to us.”
Wise one: “Thank you, my sweet. Thank you. Let us continue with the final one for today.”
“Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely for my sake.” Ibid 5:11.
Wise one: “My children. This is rather like the previous maxim. You read that the multitude followed our Lord and sought His miracles as well as cures for themselves and loved ones. But again, they were the same people who cried out for him to be crucified.” Ibid. 26:22.
“If our Lord was unloved, persecuted and accused falsely, then so too will be many men and women who follow His way. Nevertheless, our Lord asks us to:
‘Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven.” Ibid. 5:12.
“God’s love, has always been, and will continue to be special to us. Let us take a break for today, and finish with an appropriate and very loving quote from our scripture. Here our Lord promises us everything if we believe:
‘For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him, should not perish, but have everlasting life.” St. John, 3:16.
Junior: “Our deepest gratitude, father. Kanya and I look forward to your further teachings and inspiring words tomorrow, if God so wishes. We are hungry. Let us eat.”
Kanya: “Yes, daddy. We love you. Let us eat”.
