Near Death Experiences, Are They Real?

A Near Dear Experience (NDR) usually happens when a person has been pronounced clinically dead or is very close to death, and people who have had CPR. There are different beliefs of what a NDR is, mostly by scientists and by people who have experienced them. This hub will explain both of them.

Scientists Researcher Lakhmin Chawla at George Washington University, wrote in one of his articles that a NDR was a surge of electoral activity, as the brain runs out of oxygen before death. However, other scientists disagree with his theory, because they checked the patient's brain activity before death and there was no brain activity at all, therefore his theory was false.

Pim Van Lammen a cardiologist from the Netherlands did a clinical study of 344 patients who were successfully resuscitated after suffering cardiac arrest. About 18% of them had an NDE. The patients remembered details of their conditions during their cardiac arrest despite being clinically dead, even with a flat line brain stem activity. Van Lammen concluded his theory that consciousness continued despite the lack of neural activity.

Many neurologists disagree, how can a brain have any images at all if there is no activity? There is one scientist who believes that NDR does exists, mostly because people all over the world have having the same kind of NDR.

Near Death Experience A Near Death Experience is amazing. The first one ever recorded in history was in the 4th century B.C. Plato's "The Republic" in which he wrote of a soldier telling of his NDR. Plato would not have made a story like that up. He was a historian, maybe he glorified leaders of the Romans, but why would he have made up a story of a simple soldier?

People all over the world have had the same reported experiences, such as a sense of peace, lifting out of body, some can see a light, and others can see loved ones who have died before them.

Have you ever had A Near Death Experience? If so, what was it like?

I am seriously conflicted about NDEs. I found it interesting that you note that brain activity has stopped and still people recall the experience. I will be fascinated by responses from people who have had them I hope you get some.

Thank you, I hope so too. I am very interested in this because the day before my father died he had a dream about my mother. My mother had died 2 years before he died. In his dream she was reaching out to him and he was going to her. I don't know if the two things are related to each other, but I hope I can learn more about it.

Hello Michele, What a wonderful hub and the video brought a tears to my eyes. It is true Michele. I am highly allergic to yellow jackets but I didn't know at the time when I was bitten on my lower lip and within seconds I went into anaphylactic shock. My wife rushed me to the hospital which was only 3 minutes away and where I worked. I truly believe that I died and was brought back. I walked in the ER and my final words to the Head nurse was "I" (I was about to tell her I had got bitten by a bee but that is all the words I got out and remember nothing after except 4 hours later I woke and was jumping off the ER bed because of all the meds I was given to bring me back. The DR. told my wife if we lived 2 more minutes away they would of never been able to save me.But I did feel so much peace though those hours and by the way those hours only felt to me a few minutes, but I am here and making my life the best it could ever be.

Thanks for sharing Michele and God Bless

Thank you so much Clean Life for commenting on this hub. Feeling peace is amazing. Seeing and feeling are things people say. Not only do you hear and see things you can feel things. That is truly wonderful

I like to believe in near death experiences because it shows us that there is more out there, and gives hope for an afterlife. I don't understand the science behind it, as it seems no one really does, but there is something happening that can't be explained by science, and then there comes God.

Nice hub Michelle. when i was 3 yrs old, i was pronounced clinically dead...for four minutes. when people hit the 4-6 minute mark the chances of them being brought back drop dramatically, and to come back without severe brain damage is even rarer. i did not see any kind of tunnel and light. what i did see was JESUS waiting for me with open arms. HE sat me upon HIS lap and told me i had to go back because it was not my time yet. HE then sat me on a white horse and showed me an opossum. When i came out of my coma, 6 days later, i told about the experience and intrigued, mom got hold of a animal picture book that had an opossum in it (i had never seen one before this) and asked me to point one out, and i did. i have an enemy in Satan, who has tried many times in my early childhood to kill me, but that was the only time he came close to succeeding, and i believe GOD allowed it so that i might meet HIM. while i was with HIM there was no fear, just peace and the feeling of great safety. time did not exist there.

B Noelle thank you for your comment. To be honest, I don't think it has anything to do with science. But, I did write this hub to learn more about it.

timcgaa70 Thank you so much for your comment! It is truly amazing, and I believe you. What 6 year old would know what an opossum is? None. I know you are telling the truth. Thank you so much.

Just because science can't explain it doesn't mean it isn't real. NDE experiences have been happening for thousands of years, but because science can't explain NDE or that there is life after death they want to make us believe that it is unreal. Sometimes our inner senses tell us better what is real better than science could hope to.

GoGreenTips Thank you for your comment, I agree with you. It is sort of like bacteria did was not real if a scientist could not see it.

Great Hub. I think you know where I stand. I had one; actually twice and the most recent in 2005 I wrote about in my Hub "I Couldn't Believe It Happened to Me" http://hubpages.com/religion-philosophy/icouldntbe...

I hope you'll read. This was after a Grand Maul Seizure and I died. I voted UP all across except for funny. Lee

A very interesting hub. One of the most stunning NDE experiences that I know of happened when I was a student nurse working in Medical Emergency. A guy was brought in as an emergency with a heart attack, and then went into cardiac arrest. The medical team got him back and afterwards he recounted the whole episode. He could name all the doctors and nurses present, the drugs used, what time they managed to get his heart started again and how long it had stopped for. Now this was a guy from a different area of Scotland, he was a sales rep and just travelling through our patch. So he had no knowledge of the hospital or the staff. He had never had any medical training either, but he still named all the drugs used during the resucitation. Even one of the Medical Consultants who was a mega sceptic about most things, was impressed and admitted he had no explanation.

I think as well, that there are accounts of people having similar experiences to NDE's when they are perfectly healthy. So the whole issue of NDE's is a very complex one. For me personally, I do think it is a form of altered consciousness and may be one route to giving more evidence for the survival of some part of us when our physical body dies.

Great hub + voted up!

Laura, thank you again for your comment. Now I just wrote one on reincarnation and commented on someone else who wrote a hub on the same topic. In my comment I said I wrote a hub like she did, but her hub was better. I probably should not have done that. She will probably delete my comment anyway.

I have heard of these, Michelle. I know someone who says they had one where they died, they saw the light at the end of a tunnel and a wonderful garden filled with all kinds of flowers. I also know someone who claims to have died and saw the tunnel but instead of light, he heard screams and he felt an intense heat.

As for what I think about them, I really do not know. I know what I believe comes after death and I trust that in God's word.

Really interesting hub.

North Wind thank you again. I also heard ( well saw on tv) an Atheist ) who had a near death experience who saw hell. When he came back from death, he became a Christian and devoted his life to telling people about God, and the reality of God, and heaven and hell. It was very interesting.

Hi Michele. Near Death Experiences are one of my favorite subjects, so I truly enjoyed reading this informative hub. Several years ago one of my brothers in law died of heart failure and was revived. Back then neither religion or belief in God held any interest for him. A few months later I asked him whether he had experienced anything while we was dead. He was reluctant to talk about it, but eventually he told me that when he died he found himself in total darkness, then he felt a powerful hand give him a big push on his back, and he regained consciousness in the hospital. What's even more amazing is that this man's life fundamentally changed after his experience. He now believes in God, is very active in the Church, is truthful and honest. What a metamorphosis! I don't really know if he told me everything about his experience after he died, but whatever happened must have been powerful enough for him to cause him to do a 180. Great hub; voted up and definitely interesting.

mcals71, wow! what an amazing experience. As I wrote earlier, that happened to an atheist, and now he is a Christian. Now he is a minister. He tells people what happened, and teaches about Jesus. His story is truly wonderful. Thank you so much for you comment, it is wonderful.

Michele, voted up, useful and interesting! WOW, I watched the whole video. Although I have never had a NDE, I TRULY BELIEVE in them, and that they DO happen! I have read the book "Embraced By The Light" and seen the movie, also "Heaven Is For Real" about Colton Burpo. Incredible stories. I believe God has this happen so those who experience it can be an inspiration to others. Thank you for a terrific hub, and I am certain God will use it to minister to many. Blessings, Sparklea :)

In 2oo8 i was admitted into hospital with all the signs and symptoms of a stroke I can remember very little only small flashbacks Iwas talking to the doctor and then everything is blank Only a floating feeling of peace I repeated over and over again before O SACRED HEART OF JESUS I PLACE ALL MY TRUST IN THEE I must have sensed death I would love to tell you I saw bright and beautiful things in the seven minutes my heart stopped but i cant remember a thing But my thinking was never the same I could remember past sins that i had long forgtten about and wanted forgiveness for them I was terrified of the dark after my experience and was very aware of the existince of evil I stayed in a trance like state for months as if i was still not fully connected to my body I was hypervigilant and very afraid The fear is now lifting and a deep and heartfelt feeling of wanting to lead a more pure life and getting to know God is prevelant now When I do something wrong now I immedietly feel dissapointed at myself for what feels like a failure I am reading the bible now something I never did in my fortythree years as the last twentyfive years were spent in the throws of drink and drug addiction I have not turned into an alter rail eater but my faith in God has never been stronger A brain scan revealed nothing ang doctors said they had no explanation of what happened and neithe have I But from that timr I am clean of drugs and alcohol and ther is hope in my heart where ther was only despair

That is amazing! You know God loves you and Jesus allowed himself to be crucified for all of our sins! God does forgive us and still is forgiving. Please stay clean, that is a wall between God and us. I am thankful and praising God, for what He gave to you and to many of us. God is amazing wonderful and perfect love.

Hi Michele...it is so odd or maybe not so odd that I ran across this today. I am presently writing of the near death experience my sister had and will be publishing it in a week or so. It happened in 1987 and it was a life changer for her and for me . We are very close and the whole ordeal was very distressing but I am so thankful she came back to us. God was not ready for her yet.

So I am a believer in these experiences and scientists can ponder over it for ever but she knows what she knows ....and so do countless others who have been on that journey and have returned. Thank you so much for sharing this.

pstraubie48 Thank you so much for letting me know about this. Thank God she came back. Yes scientists can think about it as long as they want to.

God bless you.
