Nephilim – Anthropology and Aliens

For some people the Nephilim are hybrid Neanderthals, mythological giants, or hybrid aliens. Some of these people believe in God and an old earth. Some people believe that the Bible is mythology. There are still others who believe that mythology is legend, that is, history that is exaggerated.

Anthropology

Anthropology tells us that humans began as hominids that diverged from apes some five million years ago. Somewhere between 650,000 and 350,000 years or so, there developed a dead end branch of the Homo line, Homo Neanderthalensis (sometimes known as Homo sapiens Neanderthalensis). Among some old-earth Christians it is the Neanderthals who are referred to in Genesis:

And it came to pass, when men began to multiply on the face of the earth, and daughters were born to them, Genesis 6:1.

This means that the sons of God in verse 2 are the line of Adam, both the lines of Seth and Cain included.

There was little to differentiate between Neanderthals and modern Humans. So far, DNA sequencing shows a 99.5 to 99.9% similarity between Neanderthal and Homo Sapiens DNA. In terms of morphology (what they looked like), Neanderthals were more muscular and therefore it is assumed stronger than Homo sapiens. They also had a larger brain. Their height was approximately the same (5ft. 6 in. for men). There is nothing in their physical appearance to suggest that they or their offspring might fit the termgiants.

One of the problems with this line of reasoning is that when God brings judgment in the form of the Flood, it is judgment on man. If man is Neanderthal, the pre-Adamite soulless human, what of the line of Adam that also experiences the Flood? Of course, in an old-earth theology, the Flood is local and there may have been many survivors or even many unaffected outside of the flood area. This explanation is another exercise in eisegesis, explaining the Bible from outside sources and does not provide an adequate explanation for the text.

Mythology

A common practise among scholars is to point out the similarities of the Bible with mythology. There are giants found in most mythologies, there are giants in the Bible, the Bible must therefore be myth. There are deities mating with human women in mythology, there are angels mating with human women in the Bible, therefore the Bible must be myth. There are floods in mythology, there is a flood in the Bible, and therefore the Bible must be myth. However, there are also differences between the Bible and mythology, and those differences are important.

The giants that exist in most mythologies precede humanity. In Greek mythology, the Titans precede the gods. The earth-born, giants created when the blood of Uranus fell on the earth, precede humanity. The giants of Indian mythology, the Daityas, were also not human.

The main difference between Genesis 6 and mythological accounts is that the offspring of the sons of God and the daughters of men were fully human. Fully human, because the sons of God were in human bodies, human bodies supernaturally produced, but human bodies nonetheless. In mythological accounts, it is the giants who mate with human women, and while their offspring may be extraordinary, they are not giants.

Aliens

For a growing number of people, myths are the explanations of ancient peoples of their interaction with aliens. Not only is all life on earth the result of directed Panspermia (alien initiated evolution by seeding the planet), but humanity is the result of genetic engineering. All DNA on earth, therefore, originated on a planet outside of our solar system.

There are a number of alien races credited with creating humans. Among them are the Annunaki, believed by some UFOlogists to be the same as the sons of God found in Genesis 6. There are the Greys, short and slightly built aliens standing only 4 feet tall, primarily reported in North American sightings. There are the Nordics, averaging about 7 ft. tall, they are reported primarily from Europe. There are Reptilians or Dinosaurids, and there are increasingly, giants. So which ones seeded our planet? And are they the same ones who engineered humans?

It cannot be that all of the alien races mentioned above, can have created humanity. Nor is it possible for all of them to be genetically compatible with humans, unless someone first seeded all of their planets with a common DNA and then engineered them! But our concern is giants, and in the Bible, the giants, the Nephilim, are the descendants of the sons of Gods. Nowhere in the Bible is it indicated that the sons of God themselves are giants. In the Alien Hypothesis, it is the aliens who are the giants, not their offspring.

The Nephilim Today

Are the Nephilim with us today? There are many who believe that Extra-terrestrial beings are visiting Earth today, and that they are abducting people for sexual experimentation and inter-species breeding. While these abductions are real, they are not physical.

The accounts of abduction include people being levitated through physical objects, such as wall and ceilings, and of people being abducted from rooms full of people. There are several accounts in which an abduction occurred while abduction researchers were present, and they reported that no physical abduction took place. So what is actually happening to these people?

The researchers at CE4 and AlienresistanceHQ believe that experiencers (the term they prefer to abductees) are being hypnotically abducted by demons. This is why the abduction experience so closely follows that of the fairy abductions from centuries gone by. As some UFO researchers have observed "Aliens," writers like Vallee and Keel suggest, are just "fairies" adopting a credibly modern "space age" guise--or "fairies" may have been "aliens" adapting themselves to the beliefs of pre-scientific cultures! On the other hand, maybe fairies and aliens are demons adapting themselves to the prevailing beliefs of the current culture.

The abduction is really the implantation of a false memory. To the experiencer, this memory is real, and they will suffer the full physiological and psychological stresses of that memory. For the women who have memories of being pregnant and of having the fetus harvested prior to birth, the memories are traumatic, the psychological consequences very similar to a woman who has miscarried. However, there are no births of hybrid alien-humans being recorded.

The difference between the Nephilim of Genesis 6 and today's Aliens is that we have no physical evidence of the Aliens being here. In Genesis 6, the Nephilim became “men of renown”, modern Alien-Human hybrids seem to want to hide themselves until their secret agenda can be accomplished. The “daughters of men” from Genesis 6 gave birth, while modern experiencers are having their pregnancies terminated due to harvesting before anyone else notices that they are pregnant. It should also be noted that men are also experiencers and also subject to sexual experimentation and breeding, another difference from Genesis 6.

Conclusion

Various answers have been devised for who the Nephilim of Genesis 6 were. The answers considered in this article require a belief in an old earth and evolution. The answer from anthropology fails in the physical considerations, as Neanderthals were not giants. The answer from mythology fails in the differences; mythological giants predate humanity rather than being their descendants. The Alien answer fails because the behaviour patterns differ, the Nephilim leading open observable lives, while modern Alien encounters are secretive, as are the births and lives of the alleged hybrids.

When information from outside the Bible is used to provide the primary interpretation of a Biblical text (eisegesis), the normative understanding of the text is displaced. Very often the details in the narrative are ignored, and comparing scripture with scripture will produce contradictions. Maintaining Biblical integrity by seeking for the meaning from within the Biblical text (exegesis) conforms with the normative understanding of the text, and comparing scripture with scripture provides deeper understanding. In the case of the Nephilim it means that the sons of God were angels in human bodies. It means that the daughters of men were Homo sapiens, descendants of Adam and Eve. It means the Nephilim were human. It means that when God brought judgment on man, all of the above were included.

And it came to pass, when men began to multiply on the face of the earth, and daughters were born unto them, That the sons of God saw the daughters of men that they were fair; and they took them wives of all which they chose. And the Lord said, My Spirit shall not always strive with man, for that he also is flesh: yet his days shall be a hundred and twenty years. There were giants in the earth in those days; and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them, the same became mighty men which were of old, men of renown.

And God saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. And it repented the Lord that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him at his heart. And the Lord said, I will destroy man whom I have created from the face of the earth; both man, and beast, and the creeping thing, and the fowls of the air; for it repenteth me that I have made them.

It's within the bible.

Before the flood ....

Genesis 6:4 - The Nephilim were on the earth in those days—and also afterward—when the sons of God went to the daughters of humans and had children by them. They were the heroes of old, men of renown.

Way after the flood (In Moses' day, roughly 700ish years later) ...

Numbers 13:33 - We saw the Nephilim there (the descendants of Anak come from the Nephilim). We seemed like grasshoppers in our own eyes, and we looked the same to them.”

The account in Numbers is made by the spies who gave an evil report. What they reported cannot be trusted but it is recorded as they reported it. Numbers 14:36 calls their report "a slander upon the land." What can be trusted is Genesis 7:23 "And every living substance was destroyed which was upon the the face of the ground, both man and cattle, and the creeping things, and the fowl of the heaven: and Noah only remained alive, and they that were with him in the ark."

To take "upon the face of the ground" and equate that to the entire planet is a bit of a stretch, especially considering the people of that age had no idea how big the earth was, no way to confirm the flood was the same on the other side of the world, etc. That's a really, REALLY big assumption to read that to mean the entire planet. How would they know that? Or even know what that means?

And as for the 'evil report', that's not the only place they're mentioned. Later they're referred to as 'Anakites'....

Deuteronomy 1:28

Where can we go? Our brothers have made our hearts melt in fear. They say, ‘The people are stronger and taller than we are; the cities are large, with walls up to the sky. We even saw the Anakites there.’”

Deuteronomy 2:11

Like the Anakites, they too were considered Rephaites, but the Moabites called them Emites.

Deuteronomy 9:2

The people are strong and tall—Anakites! You know about them and have heard it said: “Who can stand up against the Anakites?”

Joshua 11:21

At that time Joshua went and destroyed the Anakites from the hill country: from Hebron, Debir and Anab, from all the hill country of Judah, and from all the hill country of Israel. Joshua totally destroyed them and their towns.

Joshua 11:22

No Anakites were left in Israelite territory; only in Gaza, Gath and Ashdod did any survive.

Joshua 15:14

From Hebron Caleb drove out the three Anakites—Sheshai, Ahiman and Talmai, the sons of Anak.

And notice what it says right after the verse you pointed out about the spy report ...

Numbers 14:38 - Of the men who went to explore the land, only Joshua son of Nun and Caleb son of Jephunneh survived.

So, Joshua saw them too.

And I don't think it's any coincidence that the very first people the Israelites are instructed to take out are the very same ones who were said to have descended from the Nephilim.

That there were giants after the Flood is undeniable, but they are not the same as the Nephilim. The word Nephilim is not used again in the Old Testament after Numbers 13, the only time it is used in connection with the sons of Anak.

Actually, the idea that the Flood was global is taken from the whole story encompassed by Genesis 6 to 9. In Genesis 6:17 we have, "And, behold, I, even I, do bring a flood of waters upon the earth to destroy all flesh under heaven; and every thing that is in the earth shall die." There is the previous verse in chapter 7, which you take exception to. In chapter 8: 21 God makes a promise "neither will I again smite any more every thing living, as I have done." If the Flood was local, as you would have it, God is liar, as there have numerous floods since. In chapter 9:11 God reiterates his promise, "neither shall all flesh be cut off any more by the waters of a flood; neither shall there any more be a flood to destroy the earth."

If we follow the normal meaning of such words, all means everything, in case we missed it, God used word everything in chapter 6. It is not only the "face of the earth" or the "face of the ground" that is mentioned, but also and simply, "the earth". Noah's Flood was either global or a myth.
