Ophiuchus, the 13th Zodiac Sign

There I was driving to working listening to my favorite radio station and minding my own business when the announcer delivered some surprizing news. Suddenly there is a 13th zodiac sign. Well, I thought, where did it come from? Why do we need a new sign? I like the ones we have. Who was the person who came up with this idea? Why hadn't I heard about this before? Is my sign going to change? It better no. I would not let it. I am and I always will be a Scorpio.

When I got home that night I sat myself down at the computer and began to research these puzzling questions. As I read and gather information I was finding myself with more questions. Imagine my surprize when I discovered that there has been a 13th sign ever since the people first began to show interest in astrology over 2,000 years ago. According to some reports the Babylonians discarded the 13th sign because they only wanted 12. It seems that 12 signs were easier to handle.

Why do we need another sign. Well, the moon's gravational pull on the earth has caused the earth to shift on it's axis, so now the sun passes through all 13 of the constellations where before it spent such a nominal time in the Ophiuchus constellation that people seem to think it was unimportant.

What is Ophichus? The Ophiuchus is depicted as a man handling a serpent, his body dividing the large snake into 2 parts. The sign of Ophiuches is patterened after the original Serpent Holder of Mythology, Enki, a Sumerian God. An interesting fact about it is that it is the only astrological sign linked to a real man. This man lived in Ancient Egypt somewhere around the 27th century BCE. His name was Imhotep. He was a Doctor, Architect, High Priest, Scribe, and an Advisor to King Djoser.

There is a bit of good news for those of us who are resistent to changing their zodiac sign; apparently the new sign shift only applies to people born after the year 2009. So, relax, if you are old enough to be reading this, you get to keep the zodiac sign you have some to know and love.

Rhonda, I was really surprized to see my sign, according to the new list, is no longer Scorpio. If there ever was a true Scorpio, it is I.

Rhonda, I guess it's a good thing he was born before 2009. Anyway, I refuse to change my sign.

Very informative hub KoffeeKlatch Gals. I've always been a Gemini and can't imagine being any other sign. I'm happy to see that this will only affect people born after 2009.

carrie, I don't know how they are going to work the horoscope part of this whole thing. I wonder if they will be putting two different daily readings out there, one for the old and one for the new. It would certainly confuse things.

This is the third hub I've come across on this new sign so I guess 'three times lucky' and I had to read about it. Interesting how its been around so long and only now is being used. I must say I like one of the traits, "likes unlimited freedom", oh wouldn't we all like that. Do what you want, go where you want, have the money to do so...sounds too good to be true! Thanks for the info KK Gals.

MPG, it's true there are some desirable traits for that sign. But it's so hard to let go of the familiar. I's love to have unlimited freedom, do you think if I could change my sign I would receive it?

New line up would make me a Gemini - no thanks, happy as a Cancer! Interesting info, but so many people I know asre so true to their star signs, that I don't think that it can really apply?

I agree CMH, I don't know if they really can change your sign. My daughter is a Gemini - a true Gemini - I just can't picture her as a Taurus.

I am glad you wrote that Orphiucus won't apply to anyone born before 2009. Truth be told, it will take a very long time to understand the impact of this change and many people tend to be quick to assume a change on something that is much more complex that we give it credit for. Astrology does not mean you are only one sign. All 12 (or13) birth signs are contained in your astrological chart and you cannot be described by your sun sign, which is the one people normally think of when they read horoscopes in magazines. If you want to understand astrology you need to have your astrological chart done!!! before that, just don't waste your time thinking whether the horoscope in the magazine fits you or not.

Thanks for you comments Adriana. Many of us don't really understand how this will effect us.

Like this so much, perhaps this means even more romantic matches compatible with the taurus woman. There is even more hope for me now, ha! ha! Really that is very interesting for those of us who have always followed the zodiac's to learn about, thank you very much. A.B.

Thanks amy. I found it interesting that this zodiac sign has been around and I never heard of it. I'm waiting to see what it does, if anything, to the horoscopes.

RedElf, all of the sudden there it was in the news. By the time they actually get around to sort out who is really what I will be one of the stars in the sky. I do wonder though if it really will effect our horoscopes down the road.

Well, now I'm really confused. Ok, so I was born well into the previous century, further, Nov 1st makes me a scorpio, so how come the new sign sounds like me also. I still see it as a complimentary sign to scorpio and Sag.

Druid, I think we can find qualities in every sign that pretains to us. I like your way of thinking - it really is a complementary sigh to both Scorpio and Sagittarus.

Fascinating. I like how you included media sources and a video. I especially like the simplicity you included in the dates of the signs. One has the capacity to build their own thirteen month calendar around the signs included in your article. However I recommend that if someone were to create such a calendar to replace the cancer with another more formidable ally of a creature. Could it not be that the cancer is indeed some other creature?
