~ Proverbs 9 The Goldmine of Spiritual Wisdom ~

~ Enticement of Wisdom or Folly ~

The Proverbs are a wealth of wonderful, wise pithy sayings! Bearing wisdom to enrich and embellish our lives with grace! Solomon astutely and candidly shares with us some of the things he has learned during his life experiences! He has left us a legacy of God inspired wisdom to help us navigate through life and avoid some of the possible detours he himself encountered! Despite what we so often hear; Experience is not always the best teacher! Example I often use; “You do not have to go down to the bottom of the creek to know that there is mud in there!” We can listen and observe from what has already transpired. In some cases we can glean from the experiences of others the necessary utensils to help guide us in a different more succinct less hazardous direction! Or we can totally ignore them and take the same path…

The Key to understanding the Proverbs is being in a relationship with the Lord! Without the Lord, you can acquire and amass knowledge from just reading. But, then one will simply know a lot, there is a huge difference! Godly wisdom opens up another whole dimension! It takes you to the precinct of “understanding” that opens the path to commence discovering how to actually live out what you are learning. God can “complete” your life! What do you mean? God is the quintessential essence of life! Whatever is missing He can fill the void! He can supply all your needs! Godly wisdom directs us to the narrow path that leads to Him! As we journey through the Proverbs we access wisdom that is benevolently imparted by King Solomon.

Solomon directs a lot of his Proverbs to the youth! The younger one is able to discover and grasp the wisdom principles extended the less folly and foolishness they will possibly encounter in life? However it is a choice! Wide road traveling is always an option. At times they do not want to listen. They just want to do their own thing! Sometimes you have to allow others to feel the consequences of their choices! Solomon says listen, “wisdom cries out! ” Solomon has already been down that road. You can go there as well or you can reap the benefits of what he has learned! We all stand to be corrected at times, that is why we are still here on earth! God has placed us here to learn. The Proverbs are for all ages regardless of sex, your race, color or creed or your position in society, there is something here for everyone!

Putting in to practice the benefits of wisdom leads to a more steady secure life! These benefits are voluminous and varied. There are topics on every area of life! It is recommended that you a read a Proverb a day. Treat them just like you would a calendar. Whatever today is start on that Proverb! Just think if you are diligent in your efforts in one year you will have read the Proverbs at least twelve (12) times! The Word of God is “Alive” each time you will learn something new! Each encounter is additional quality time you spend with the Lord meditating on his Word. God wants to be a part of our lives each and every day!

We must learn to live life trusting God! No matter how carefully you plan your life, life can throw you a curve that will or can disrupt your plan. Look all around and see our country is still trying to recover from the recession. Many other nations are suffering financial setbacks as well. In order to prevent mayhem and pandemonium we are never really totally quite informed to the severity of the situation. Our country was even 'SHUT DOWN' momentarily because President Obama and the Senate were unable to reach an agreement." Look at all the signs about us. Many earthquakes and various natural catastrophes throughout the world continue and there are still more to come! The Word of God is being fulfilled! Regardless of what happens we can always have Hope in the Lord!

God is always speaking! We just have to get better at listening! He will never tell or lead you to do anything that goes against His principles. God’s ethical wisdom cannot be obtained through worldly measures. One must sincerely spend time meditating on the Scriptures. Godly wisdom is a reflection of our Creator the Maker of Heaven and of earth! We are told “…Yet, I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. If that is how God clothes the grass of the field which is here today and tomorrow is thrown in the fire, will He not much more clothe you, O ye of little FAITH? So do not worry, saying, what shall we live we eat? Or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the pagans run after all these things, and our heavenly father knows that you need them. But seek first his kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well...” Matthew 6

I was taught by my wise mother who loved the Lord, that we are forever “becoming we never arrive!”

Proverbial Lesson Highlights

Proverbs 9

This Proverbs starts by sharing the strength that wisdom exudes. Columns were built and are still used to fortify and hold up magnificent structures! The number seven here represents completeness and perfection! Throughout the Word seven is consistently used. It is a reoccurring cycle by which we measure time; seven days complete a week. Seven days to complete creation on the seventh day God Blessed it and sanctified it. There are seven angels accountable to God, who guard the seven churches in Revelation. There are seven letters written, one to each church. The words of the Lord are pure words: as silver tried in a furnace on earth, purified seven times” Psalm 12 Remember you can become complete in God!

Jesus Christ is the epitome of wisdom incarnate! Through Him we have been given salvation! Who is Jesus Christ? “He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. For by Him all things were created; things in Heaven and in earth, visible and invisible whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things were created by Him and for Him. He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together. And He is the HEAD of the body, the church. He is the beginning and the firstborn from among the dead, so that in everything He might have supremacy. For GOD was pleased to have all HIS FULLNESS dwell in Him, and through Him to reconcile to himself all things, whether things on earth or things in Heaven , by making peace through His Bloodshed on the cross… ” Colossians 1

In this Proverb both wisdom and folly are compared and contrasted! It has been said that “wisdom appeals to the mind and folly to the senses.” You may receive temporary enjoyment from the enticement of folly but it is fleeting and too much of it will result in ruin. Remember wisdom teaches us that we need to seek God first! For example, Wisdom will stop you from impulsively flying off the handle and just saying anything. You elect to respond rather than react! As you acquire wisdom you will begin to think before you speak and exercise more self control which is a Fruit of His Spirit! You desire to please Him!

Folly described as the foolish woman is discussed here! Quite often she spends her time distracting many from what life is really all about! Don’t be pulled in by anyone’s folly. Wickedness can be hypnotic and many become pulled away and enticed by it! God does not seek to entrap you! He wants to free you! He has a purpose and plan for your life! It is so important to know the ways of the Lord. He does not operate in the dark nor lurk in the shadows trying to catch you off guard. . . No! He shines Light on the darkness! He does not want you to stumble! Here we find righteousness and wickedness are compared and contrasted! This Proverb makes a strong case to help one distinguish between the two! There is an ongoing spiritual battle to pull you away from God’s Way and into the world’s deceptive ways. One must be aware by becoming discerning!

If you need a dose of wisdom guess what? There is help! Remember wisdom ushers in discernment! You want to be able to determine if someone or something is from the Lord! When you face a trial turn to God first! “Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness…Do you really want to be wise? The Word says; “If any of you lack wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given unto him, But when he asks , he must believe and not doubt, because he who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind. That man should not think he will receive anything from the Lord; he is a double-minded man, unstable in all he does.” James 1. Listen closely what James is sharing take some time and ponder on this passage of scripture.

When someone mocks, criticizes you or makes an unfavorable remark don’t just react! Don’t let them push your buttons by remote control! Make it a priority to seek out God’s wisdom and implement His ways in your life rather than being tossed to and from by the ways of the world. These pithy saying are powerful and life changing. You cannot undo what has been done. But you can start where you are. Don’t let anything be more important than your relationship with the Lord. “God is Love” and He will teach you what love really is! God has everything and everyone under His control! As you seek Him above all else He will teach you when and how to apply His wisdom and how to guard your heart with His discernment to better distinguish between wisdom and folly!

It is under pressure that one discovers the depth of their own character. Others look from the outside in. They may not have the slightest clue to what the Lord has done for you. Know God for yourself never let anyone make you doubt your relationship with the Lord! “You don’t know like I Know what the LORD has done for me!”

Proverb 9 concludes by telling us: “But little do they know that the dead are there, that her guests are in the depths of the grave. “

Perhaps one of the reasons I enjoy the Proverbs is its common sense and sound advice that relate to all aspects of life. This hub certainly affirms that.

"I was taught by my wise mother who loved the Lord, that we are forever “becoming” we never “arrive!” The more we learn the more we need to know… Each day brings a new life lesson." Your mother was indeed wise. We never arrive and are never satisfied with where we are, but we keep walking the path to the destination.

"Remember wisdom teaches us that we need to seek God first! For example, Wisdom will stop you from impulsively flying off the handle and just saying anything. You elect to respond rather than react! As you acquire wisdom you will begin to think before you speak and exercise more self control which is a Fruit of His Spirit! You desire to please Him!" AMEN, AMEN, AMEN. Reacting and overreacting reveal a loss of self-control which results when we are not in the wisdom.

Thank you DeBorrah for this "wise" hub filled with the wisdom of our Lord and Savior. All glory to God.

Forever His,

The book of Proverbs is a resource that every youth should just try to exhaust. Of course, they never will. I was challenged as a youth to take one chapter of Proverbs a day and read the chapter that corrusponded to the day of the month. This was a great blessing to me and very enlightening. Every young person should do this.

DeBorrah, it is so true that life can throw us a curve now and then. It is only by faith in the Lord we can spiritually get through those times without changing who we are. I believe that those who find that negative occurences bring out negative behaviors are listening to every wind of doctrine that blows their way. They are not rooted in any steadfast wisdom so anything that gives the appearance of salvation at the moment, influences them. Such are the vices of the world - momentary fixes - quick and efficient but neither stable nor longstanding. Folly seems to follow them and they never understand why. In Christ, we learn not to have so many buttons that others can push - the patience to endure and rejoice in all things. Wonderful hub. Peace.

A M Werner, We are on the same page here! I believe the Word when it says; "All things work together for good to those who LOVE God and are called according to His Purpose..." When a curve comes we "know through Faith" that the Lord will bring us through! We desire His Will in our lives! In the meantime He is building our character!

You are right about those buttons! Thank God for His Holy Spirit! It is always a pleasure! Thank you for visiting and sharing, In His Love & Blessings!

When He the Spirit of Truth is come, He will guide you into all truth. God does not wish us to flounder around in stupid and dangerous ignorance. He wants us to want to know of Him and His ways. He wants us to able to be blessed. All we have to do is ask of Him. But we are apt to not ask and to try to figure things out on our own. We love to feel like we came up with the idea, we solved our own problem, we were all we needed. That is where the problem actually begins with the sinful self and the neglect of God.

Nobody, It is wonderful and comforting to know that we can always ask the Lord to help us! What is so important is that we consult with HIM before we do something that we are not sure of... Seeking Him first is always wise. You are so right God does not want us "to flounder around in stupid ignorance. He wants us to know Him and HIS ways." Amen!
