Padre Pio: Stigmata Of God - Part 17

INTERIOR SCENE - SAN GIOVANNI ROTONDO RECTORY, JANUARY 1940 - DAYTIME

52 YEAR-OLD PADRE PIO is sitting across from three doctors, DOCTOR GUGLIELMO SANGUINETTI, DOCTOR CARLO KISWARDAY and DOCTOR MARIO SANVICO.

52 YEAR-OLD PADRE PIO

When I met each of you I told you that you would come here to build my hospital. Now that the local hospital has been condemned after last year's earthquake, it is time to begin.

He pulls a 50-lire coin from his robe.

52 YEAR-OLD PADRE PIO

I want to make the first donation for the Home To Relieve Suffering.

DOCTOR GUGLIELMO SANGUINETTI

But, Padre Pio. After the currency devaluation that will barely buy five bricks!

52 YEAR-OLD PADRE PIO

When you first came to me, Guglielmo, and you told me that you could not leave Firenze as your practice was there and you could not make a living out here, I told you that God would provide and what happened?

DOCTOR GUGLIELMO SANGUINETTI

(sheepishly)

You know that, Padre. I won the lottery.

52 YEAR-OLD PADRE PIO

And thus you have never had to collect a fee for any service you have provided here. God provided then and he will provide now.

(he picks up the coin)

I have held this coin pinned to my habit next to my heart. It was given to me by a destitute woman who insisted that she could go through the winter without matches for fire, but she wanted to donate to the glory of God. It is all the money I have and it will serve to begin the hospital construction. The rest of the money will soon come.

DOCTOR CARLO KISWARDAY

Padre Pio, but with Germans everywhere and war on the horizon it will prove impossible to obtain building equipment and materials at any price!

52 YEAR-OLD PADRE PIO

There will be challenges. But they will all be overcome. This will be a center where science and religion combine to prepare the way for the intervention of grace.

DOCTOR MARIO SANVICO

But nothing like this has ever been done before!

52 YEAR-OLD PADRE PIO

(calmly)

That is why it will be done now.
