A Dream of Cavaliers Reincarnation or Genetic Memory?

17th century lady Was this me in another life?
17th century lady Was this me in another life?

Life is a mystery that we just cannot fathom. So many questions that can't be answered. Do our dreams reflect a life before this one? Is there a way that our memories are somehow imbued in our Souls and then passed down into our new bodies when we are born? Is reincarnation a fact or just a fools dream? Why do so many people believe that they have lived before?

Recent studies have revealed that something called genetic memory could very well be the answer to our questions. But these scientific ideas don't take into consideration the fact that if they really are genetic memories and not reincarnation then how can someone remember a life that hasn't been lived by their ancestors?

Learn more about Genetic Memories

Genetic Memory

According to various sources, Genetic Memory is a memory that is already implanted into our brains at birth.

As we have just been born there is no way that we could possibly have experienced it so therefore it must have been passed down through the family in the same way that we inherit our fathers nose, our mothers eyes and so on.

Deep inside our brain is the genetic code that may be a map or blueprint of what has gone before. It does make sense. If we can inherit our families shapes and sizes, hair color and so on, then why not their memories too?

This theory has only been recently studied in real detail and the facts are still being looked at. The hows and whys are not quite there yet. But its possible.

For example, if a child is really interested in say, playing the piano, maybe it is because their great grandfather was a concert pianist. Or could it be the love you have for the ocean is passed down from your sailor grandfather? And so on.

My past life experience
My past life experience

The English Civil War

The English Civil war from 1642 - 1651 was a war between the Crown and the Parliamentarians. Better known as Roundheads and Cavaliers.

The war was a fight between the people wanting to keep the King and crown, and others rising up against them and wanting a Parliament State. The leader of the roundheads was Oliver Cromwell.

The outcome was King Charles 1 being beheaded in 1649 and then the 'reign' of Oliver Cromwell for the next 10 years.

Eventually after Cromwell's death King Charles 11 became King. But because of the war, he no longer could be above parliament, and therefore that is why, today, the Crown cannot get involved in matters of state.

A Dream of Days gone By.

I fell asleep not thinking of anything in particular. It seemed as though only a few seconds had passed when I found myself floating down the gray steps that were surrounded by flowers and shrubs.

At the bottom was a dark corridor that turned suddenly to the right. I felt myself gliding along it, only to see an open doorway at the far end. As it became clearer I saw an old woman standing with her back to me staring out of a window.

She had gray hair tied back in a loose bun, with a small mop cap on her head.

Her dress was long and grey, and as she turned towards me I could see a bib or apron at the front. I didn't see the little boy at first, but he was standing next to her underneath the windowsill.

He had pure white blond hair, knee length trousers, a small jacket and stockings or socks, with shoes that had buckles on the front.

As I was taking in the scene I realised that I was floating towards the woman. Then to my amazement I floated into the woman!

I felt my soul settle and became one with her. At that moment I became her, but I was also still me. Its hard to explain. I felt the same as I do now, but without my memories. Only hers. Or should I say me.

The exact view from my window in the 17th Century.

Past life regression
Past life regression

The feeling was strange but very natural. Her memories, were my memories. It was though someone had wiped my mind clean and written another life into my brain. All her fears and worries were now me and mine.

'I' remember going over to the window and looking down. I realised that I was in an upstairs bedroom with a pallet bed to the left, and a badly made wardrobe to my right. The window panes were lattice, or lozenge shaped. They are diamond shaped and are called lead calmes or quarrys.

Below the window the scene was slightly distorted because of the glass lead that left the scene bubbled and gray. But I could see the Parliamentary Roundheads coming down the road from one direction, and the Royalists of King Charles the first appearing from the left.

I remember feeling a dreadful fear as I knew there was going to be bloodshed. I reached out for the little boys hand, and felt a comfort in the warmth of his fingers wrapping themselves around mine.

This scene stayed with me for ages. I just stood there. Time stood still until, all of a sudden the sounds of battle came from below my window. I placed my hand over my heart and pulled the boy away from the window and told him to go and sit on the bed. I then turned back to the window, but by this time I felt really strange.

Suddenly my soul stepped back and without turning went back up the tunnel, leaving the woman behind still staring out the window. I floated back up the stairs, still backwards, then darkness.

I woke up.

roundheads and cavaliers
roundheads and cavaliers
17th century young woman
17th century young woman

The memory lives on.

This happened to me many years ago. The whole scene has stayed in my mind ever since. In fact I even painted the picture, but its got lost over time. The small boy had white blond hair. Then a few years later in my real life, I had a son. Pure white blond hair.

Was this genetic memory? Was she my great great grandmother, and the boy her grandson? Were they really my relatives and Is this why my child had pure blond hair too?

Or was it Fate, Karma, Reincarnation, Past lives?

I will never know. But she was as real to me as I am now. I would love to find out who she was. If she was.

Apart from this episode I have had many strange dreams. One of being on an old Ship and climbing up the rigging. In that one I was a guy.

And too many others to mention. But they were dreams I believe. This one felt totally different.

If there is such a thing as reincarnation then I can bet my last dollar so to speak that this was real. In fact as real as our reality.

I guess we will never know.

Do you believe this was reincarnation or genetic memory?

Really interesting Nell, wow. I think the bible teaches reincarnation. Not really sure if it means everyone or if there is a reason or what but we have surely seen instances just like yours and small children with knowledge of a person many years before from even another place. Just shivery huh? lol

Very, very interesting.

Hi Jackie, thanks for reading, yes it was really spooky at the time, and something I will always remember, I am convinced it really was reincarnation, and yes it does mention it in the bible, great to see you, and glad you liked it, nell

Wow, very interesting, Nell, of your experiences with dreaming. Unfortunately, I really do not remember my dreams, but I know I dream. However, one time, I do remember parts of a very long and very detailed dream of some home I was in, but I have never been to before, but it was so detailed and I just remember being in awe of the décor from a long time ago. I felt as thought I was actually there, and remember waking up feeling so strange about it.

Have a lovely night and maybe more interesting dreams,

Faith Reaper

To most people in science, your experience would probably be labeled as a dream, simply because it's can't be proven.

Even if you were to tell them that you looked up the history and all the information you found, coincided with your dreams, they would still probably doubt you because it could always be chalked up to the fact that you read it in a book and just don't remember, or that someone told you a story once and your unconscious mind turned it into something personal. You can't relate something like this to a person with a closed mine.

But I, for one, believe you because I believe in reincarnation. I don't see how a person can be born on this Earth and expect to perfect his/her character in less than a century. I think it takes many centuries to do that...many lives.

Most people don't remember who they were and I think basically, it's for the best. A lot of us make so many mistakes while we're here that I think it's better NOT to remember, when you start a new life. Best to start with a clean slate. Still, sometimes information comes through and you can't help but be fascinated...

Wow, very interesting hub Nell. I don't know what I believe in regard to reincarnation or genetic memory, but I know Buddhists believe that the Dalai Llama is reincarnated, and they search for a child who is born at the time of death of the past leader who possesses memories and knowledge he could not be expected to have otherwise. Intriguing.

Very interesting hub!

Like you said, I dream almost every night but do not remember them at all in the mornings. But there are some childhood dreams which are still fresh in my mind. And every one around tells me that it must have got some connection with my past life. God knows----!

Very interesting read of your experiences! Thanks for sharing!

Interesting dream, Nell. I wonder if it was more communicating with spirits than reincarnation? The fact that you joined souls and her memories became yours could indicate either, really. What were the memories she shared with you as she looked out the window?

Hi bravewarrior, the memories were just being so darn scared of the fighting, it was really strange, I could feel her fright as she tried to look out for her grandchild, it was though someone had painted a whole new picture of her life on my brain, so you could be right there! the trouble was being a puritan at that time was a scary as being a royalist, each side was dangerous, but Cromwell was pretty evil, it was thanks to him that the witch trials really started because of his puritan religion, so anybody that didn't look as though they were pious were in trouble, scary times! thanks for reading, nell

First off Nell, I love watching your English CW reenactors! Genetic memory is quite interesting, Jung may have called it the "collective unconscious." But then again, if indeed we return to this earth in a new body and personality then sure enough the things you write on here may have seeped up from your deepest subconscious ( which knows all according to some, even a person's passing over time) into consciousness and caused a Deja vu experience. At any rate, I really dig this article my friend and will share it.

I had goosebumps after reading this. Genetic memory or reincarnation...I don't know what I would call it, but have had a fascination with pioneer life. I use to think it was because I enjoyed reading Little House on the Prairie books and listening to my great grandmother talk about her life as a child. After reading this I may have to re-evaluate my dreams. Great hub!!

What a fascinating experience! It could be one or the other. I believe these things can happen. Genetic memory is not that far off a reality if you ask me. I know when I lived in Germany I felt so serene and at home even more than when I am here in the US. My mom even noticed it when we visited Germany a few years ago. She said I was so relaxed and at home in Germany but not so in the US. She even said r dry thing falls into place for you here in Germany. We also had visited Italy and she noticed I was not the same-more nervous and antsy. Of course, Italy is crazy and I love the orderliness and cleanliness of Germany. I don't know if that is something genetic of not but Vermany has always felting home to me.

Interesting, Nell. I don't believe or disbelieve. There might be a possibility. I've felt an itch on the bridge of my nose. In times past men wore helms with nose-guards that probably brought about an itch there. I've also had dreams of being trapped underground.

My paternal great-grandfather and his father moved from North Norfolk to North Yorkshire to work in the ironstone mines in East Cleveland. They'd been farm workers before, now they worked underground in cavernous holes that sometimes caved in. Were they ever trapped? I have no information, but I've woken up in a sweat and yelling.

Great grandad landed on his feet, marrying a local farmer's daughter, but he succumbed to lung disease, probably due to working in damp underground conditions.

Likewise there's every likelihood earlier ancestors went to war against or on the side of the Danes and Norsemen (E, NE and NW England were all colonised by the Danes and Norsemen)

What an intriguing experience, Nell, whether it was simply a dream, genetic memory or something else....

I don't dream as much the past few years because I get less REM sleep. However, when younger I dreamed a lot--dreams that seemed very real (no matter how strange the details) and that I recalled upon waking. I never remember being anyone other than myself in dreams or nightmares, though the remaining "cast of characters" was sometimes astounding and the occurrences often bizarre.

I sometimes think that creative people dream differently than those whose minds tend to be more logical.

Voted Up and Interesting

That's funny you should say that kitty because I thought of that too! seriously, I was thinking about it a while ago, and came up with the conclusion that when our mothers have us, they also pass on a bit of their soul too, maybe not all of it, but some, so it's a similar thing, makes sense doesn't it? and the fathers of course, that must be amazing being a wolf in a dream! thanks as always, nell

I do believe in genetic memory. But we have to keep in mind that genes are passed on to children mostly by young adults, so all the knowledge and wisdom obtained by adults after their child-begetting stage are wasted and not transferred to the next generation. We also have to remember that a child's brain is like a spounge, even absorbing what they are told - things that may be beyond their comprehension, and still, one day their children seem to born with an instinctive comprehension of the particular topic. for example, today's children can work a cell phone as if they were born with it in their hands, while genetic memory could have only been passed on to them by parents between the ages of say 18 and 30.

A child also experiences reality more intense, so if a person between the age of 2 and 12 saw the beheading of a king, and even up to the age of parenthood, the memory will be burnt into/onto the genes and transferred to their children, but only to be recalled by those children and their children, and maybe somewhat corrupted, via specific stimuli. Thinking computer harddrive now....

Ref your dream, Nell. Maybe it was genectic memories, but also keep in mind that you are a hyperactive reader, and everything you read goes into your memory, to tumble like laundry in a tumble drier for as long as you live. Your brain sees it while you sleep and provides the most awesome dreams....

Excellent, thought-provoking hub!

The detail of your experience is so remarkable, whether it's a genetic memory, dream, reincarnation or something else. I'm coming late to this party, but just had to throw in a thought or two.

First, when we're dreaming we're in REM, between deep sleep and consciousness. REM is basically the same as the heightened (or alpha) state we call "day dreaming" when we're wide awake. Therefore, I think your "dream" was really a past-life memory, mostly because the way it played out was so specific and vivid...as if YOU were living it. Most likely, you HAD lived it.

Also, you're drawn to, and have a fascination with, that particular time period, which is usually an indication of having lived during that time.

I've often pondered the question of "genetic memory" or "reincarnation" to explain certain traits and beliefs which had no basis in my present life. I've decided it's about half and half. My tolerance for various religious beliefs, for instance, I chalk up to genetic memory thanks to many ancestors in several decidedly different religions. Also my psychic abilities were definitely inherited from my maternal grandmother.

But since none of those ancestors were hung for witchcraft or ever chained up in dungeons, my claustrophobia and aversion to having anything tight around my wrists or neck can only be a holdover from previous lives. Also, I'm aware that my aversion to certain people and certain types of people are holdovers from past lives.

btw, I've just begun reading Pepys's diaries, which start in 1660 just before Charles II returns to England and the monarchy is restored. I'd already read a biography of Pepys which contained a little bit about the years between Charles I and II, but am now looking for a book that specifically covers those years. Can you recommend one?

Nell Rose profile image

Nell Rose 2 years ago from England Author

Hi Jama, sorry I never saw this comment. Yes genetic memory can explain so much, but as you say not everything can be about our ancestors, especially if you do have that aversion to having anything tight around your wrists or neck. My dream really was so real, it does make me think. Believe it or not I still haven't got round to reading Pepys diary! I keep meaning to buy it but then go and forget! lol!

I just went to take a look to see what books I could find, and there are a few that sound interesting. The best thing to do is just write in the search something like, 'the life of Oliver Cromwell' it should bring up loads about that time in between the two Charles, okay?

JamaGenee profile image

JamaGenee 2 years ago from Central Oklahoma

I already looked for Cromwell books earlier today. A total bust. Either they're geared for grade school kids or they're priced like textbooks, which means they're wayyyy out of my budget. I think I need to be looking for "just" a history of the English Civil War instead. Hard to believe such an important period in English history hasn't generated hundreds of books on the subject, so I'll keep looking. Were I actually IN England, I'm certain I'd have NO trouble finding dozens of such books on the shelves of used bookshops in any number of "literary meccas" all over the country, or on the tables of used book sellers under that bridge in London. Sigh... ;D

Nell Rose profile image

Nell Rose 2 years ago from England Author

Hi Jama, yes that's so true, its funny how there aren't many that you can find over there, good luck with trying to find one, and I just spotted your email, so will be replying now, sorry it took me so long, not been so good today, thanks nell

JamaGenee profile image

JamaGenee 2 years ago from Central Oklahoma

Got your email, thanks! As for the availability of used book sellers, one of my Dream Vacations is renting a self-catering cottage for a month or so in or near Hay-on-Wye and combing its used bookshops and stalls.

As for a book on the English Civil War, after combing offers on both sides of the Pond, I chose "The English Civil War: Papists, Gentlewomen, Soldiers, and Witchfinders in the Birth of Modern Britain", by Diane Purkiss because it uses letters and journals from all levels of society at the time to give an overall view of events, not just the military or political. Also, it contains mini-bios of the major players such as Charles I and Cromwell. All in all, exactly what I was looking for! ;D

There may even be other answers. The energy that is us is always being replenished by food. The water we drink has probably been drunk by many others over time.

Energy/atoms are capable of carrying information. Some of our experiences might be glimpses of other lives that seem like our own.

Our energy is never destroyed, there is always energy leaving and being replenished. it is constantly merging with other systems . How much information does it carry? How much can we pick up on? We don't know.

When I was very small I told my mother that she was the best mother I have ever had. My last mother fed me flies and spiders. I can see the house I used to live in in my mind; an old wood house with all wood furniture. Reincarnation or something else?

I am inclined to think imagination of a small child. But who knows?

Thats great Jama, glad you found the right book. yes there was more to that time than the war, so it sounds like you have found yourself a really good deal, enjoy the book! I have never been to Hay on Wye, I shall have to go and take a look at some photos, sounds wonderful!

Thats a fascinating theory Slarty, and one I hadn't thought of! yes you could well be right there, energy never dies just changes its form, and as atoms, yes they are everywhere and can carry memories I am sure. Your memory is fascinating, I am sure its real, whatever the reason behind it, thanks so much for reading, you have given me lots to think about concerning memories, nell

Nell, to jumpstart your curiosity about Hay-on-Wye, here's a link to my blogpost about it:

(For the life of me, I can't remember now why I chose the title "Wry-on-Wye" unless to allude to the British penchant for eccentricity.. ) ;D

Hi Jama, lol! yes that's it, the eccentricity! thanks I will go and take a look, sounds fascinating! have a wonderful weekend, nell

Nell this was a great read. I loved your detailed reminiscing story. Yes I know that we do sometimes remember other lives, but what I found the most confusing is that it might not be a past life. I think we live many lives simultaneously. The reasons why I say this is because I recall events that would more likely happen to be in our future. Snippets of it. I also feel that we choose our genetic lineage before we are born into a family for the reasons we forget the moment we are born. Voted up!

Yes I know what you mean Nadine! I also tend to believe in the simultaneously life lines too! it does make sense! and yes I have dreamed of the future too, so maybe you are right! thanks so much for reading, nell

Hi again, Nell. After wading through a thick history of the English Civil Wars AND a bio of Cromwell, I'm amazed England survived at all!

That said, since your memory of being the woman at the window was so vivid, do you recall anything specific to identify the village, or even what part of the country it was in? The photo of the timbered and whitewashed buildings in the high street could be practically anywhere. Just wondering... ;D

Nell Rose profile image

Nell Rose 2 years ago from England Author

Hi Jama, no, I have tried to see if any photos on google match up but so far it can be anywhere as you said, but I am still looking, it would be great if I could find it, if only I could remember a name or the person or even a snippet it would be great! and yes back then in the Civil war it was a nightmare time, it not only changed the whole way we used parliament it also caused the puritans to come out in full force which brought its own problems, thanks for coming back, nell

JamaGenee profile image

Actually you could limit your search to the villages where Royalist and Parliamentarian forces faced off in town. It was my impression that most of the battles took place in fields and such outside of town. That if they did come face to face inside a village, it was either by accident (because one side had lost track of the movements of the other), or the intent of one side was to punish a particular village for remaining loyal to the other side. Anyway, that should narrow down the possibilities, although your 1640s self *could've* lived in one of the villages burned to the ground afterwards by the victor. Oh, dear....

Hi Jama, lol! yes that's the problem! the funny thing is, and this is where the genetic memory comes into it, is the fact that we have a 'Cromwell Garden's' in my small village! and streets are only named after something that happened there! we do know that Cromwells troups came through this way, so maybe, well you never know, it could be a memory of a great great great! thanks again, nell

It has been way too long since I have paid you a visit my dear Nell. I hope all is well. Fascinating article dear. I've been watching the new show on TV, I forget what it is called. These people go under and remember names, places, faces, some hundreds of years ago. I can't see how they can be so accurate about it if there was not some type of reincarnation going on there. I love the subject, talking about it. Great article as always Nell. I've never thought about genetic memory, truly remarkable subject. Up, awesome, useful, interesting and shared Nell.

Hi lyric, aw thanks, nice to see you too! I used to watch a program similar to that too, I also can't remember who was in it, but it was fascinating, but genetic memory also makes sense too doesn't it? thanks as always, nell

I´m brazilian but I have some dream memory about the city of Hercolano, in Italy, and Sagres, in Portugal. I also have some memories of the Rajastan desert palaces. When I reseached about my ancient relatives, I discovered that my grandgrandfather lived in Naples, close to the old city of Hercolano.

Hi Jose, that's amazing! It just goes to show that genetic memory does work! Thanks so much for sharing your memories, nell

Fascinating! I've had many weird dreams, but never any of that caliber, where I 'became' someone else. Most of my dreams are pretty crazy, reflecting, I think, mostly current concerns.

I do think you may have had an insight into reincarnation. You might trace your family history back, and discover that, indeed, you had an ancestor who was in that very position at some point.

Genetic memory, I think, deals more with things we need to know for survival, such as 'fire burns.' It explains why, I think, that we continually see so many wild animals dead on the roads: they get killed, and don't live to pass on the genetic memory they'd otherwise have, that cars and roads are dangerous.

Voted up, interesting and awesome!

Hiya Lizzy, yes you have a good point there, a lot of it is genetic memory for things like fires etc, but I do think our memories can capture scenes to pass on, I remember reading about people who have had transplants and they start to remember the other persons lives! it seems our memories maybe in all our genes, not just our brains, cool eh? lol! thanks for reading, nell

I vote for genetic memory. I was walking in London and was lost . I was in a working class neighborhood and went past a house with yellow roses. I felt like the roses were mine. I was 19 at the time. This happened in the real. Then I dreamed I was in Brownhelm somewhere in Ohio and there were roses. Then I was at my great grandmothers house in Fremont Ohio and there were the roses. I have had a despeate dream to take a clipping from my great grandmother's last residence in Toledo a house built in 1910 by her husband . I was to take a clipping . But I visited the house and never took the clipping. I am still constantly being told to get a start. I know nothing of roses and I have been told it is very hard to transfer them. Maybe I will just plant a yellow rose bush. I suppose they were some family roses that got brought here by my great grandmothers family.

Hi Rebecca, amazing story! yes it definitely sounds like a genetic memory is giving you a gentle push! I totally believe that our memories are transferred down to us by our family, that in itself is amazing, don't you think? reincarnation is fascinating, I do wish they could figure it out one way or the other, either way is amazing! thanks for reading, nell

Oliver Cromwell VII was in my high school class in Harrisburg Pennsylvania. He claimed he was the descendant. He met with a very strange death a few years ago. He would now be 78 years old. His sons live in this same area now.

Hi gabby, Wow! to be honest I never even thought about his children! lol! I had to go and look them up! its amazing, we always think of people in history, but forget that they have descendants!! I would love to know what happened to him, and thanks for sharing that info, now I am fascinated and on the trail! lol! nell

Fascinating! I love hearing such stories, and learning about this field of study.

Who knows? It may be a combination of reincarnation and genetic memory!
