Righteousness In God's Eyes

Righteousness In God’s Eyes

“For I tell you that unless your righteousness surpass that of the Pharisees and the teachers of the Law , you will certainly not enter the Kingdom of heaven. “

Matthew 5 : 20

The Pharisees and the teachers of the Law are the most religious group of people in Jesus times. They follow strictly the smallest details of their traditions. They fast twice a week. They tithe every portion of their income to the smallest detail and they strictly observe Sabbath rules and regulations. The people in Jesus time taught that the Pharisees and teachers of the Law are the primary candidates to enter the Kingdom of God. But they are shocked when Jesus says that unless their righteousness exceeds that of Pharisees and teachers of the Law, certainly they will not enter the kingdom of heaven.

Why Jesus said this so? For the Pharisees and the teachers of the Law are blind and self-righteous. They cannot see nor discern their sinfulness and depravity. In order to find the Kingdom of God , one must first see himself as he really are, a depraved and lost sinner. You must see yourself as a terrible sinner not just an ordinary sinner which occasionally sins , but someone who is totally depraved, lost and totally adverse to God’s righteousness.

According to John MacArthur in his book The Beatitudes – The Only Way To Happiness , if a person does not come to JesusChrist shattered to the very depths of his being and mourning over his sinfulness with a hunger and thirst after righteousness more than anything else, there is a possibility that that person is not a Christian. One must experience brokenness over his sinfulness. One must be unsettled from his convenience or complacency.

There is so much easy believism in our time that many profess Christianity without undergoing brokenness over one’s sinfulness, without experiencing calvary. Many are not actually seeing their true spiritual condition before the Holy God. That is why Christianity today is characterized by lukewarmness, self-centeredness, worldliness and superficial commitment to Christ.

You can only appreciate the beauty of the cross if you have seen your total depravity and sinfulness before God. You can only be a true servant of God who truly loves God and lives for the glory of God if you are first broken and humbled upon realizing your terrible sinfulness. Apostle Paul, probably the greatest Christian who ever lived has lived entirely for the glory of God , who has truly impacted the Gentile world, has seen first himself as worst and chief of sinners.

Apostle Paul has fallen deeply in love with Christ because he has seen himself as a great sinner not just an ordinary sinner. He has realized his so great indebtedness to Christ’s work on calvary that is why he was able to live for His Lord with great joy amidst sufferings and persecutions When I realized my depravity and sinfulness completely, only then I learned to love the Lord deeply from my heart. I have been a professing Christian for about seven years before I have seen myself as I am really are, a terrible sinner before the Holy God. Only after realizing my true condition before God, I experience assurance of God’s forgiveness when I confessed my sins.

Truly the Kingdom of God is never meant for the self-righteous people who believe in their works of righteousness, but is reserved for the broken sinner who had seen himself as vile before the Holy God and doomed for eternity apart from the mercy and grace of God.

In closing let me quote this parable from Jesus.

To some who are confident of their own righteousness and looked down on everybody else , Jesus told this parable : “Two men went up to the temple to pray , one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector . The Pharisee stood up and prayed about himself: ‘God I thank you that I am not like other men- robbers, evildoers, adulterers or even like this tax collector. I fast twice a week and give a tenth of all I get. ‘

“But the tax collector stood at a distance . He would not even look up to heaven, but beat his breast and said, ‘God have mercy on me ,a sinner.’

“I tell you this man , rather than the other went home justified before God. For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.”

Luke 18 :9-14

"Depravity" this is a word that describes the total incapacity of man to be righteous by himself. The good news is, God is gracious. By His grace, the chief sinners can be changed and be made righteous in Christ Jesus. Thanks for this hub.

Ate Cristina dear sister: Thank you for this reminder.

It is only through the cleansing blood of our Lord and Savior Christ Jesus, that we are permitted to attain righteousness and salvation, and be permitted to appear before our heavenly Father sanctified and worthy to be recognised as a son or a daughter of God.

Thank you Jesus!

This is so true Cristina. Your teaching brought clarity to what Jesus meant about our righteousness exceeding that of the pharisees. What a relevant observation that the only to achieve that is through recognizing how depraved we really are.

Well written and insightful revelation.

Hi Tamarajo I am glad to hear from you again. I am greatly blessed and encouraged by your visit. Yes there is no other way to enter the kingdom of God but by realizing our total depravity. Only in realizing our sinfulness can we really appreciate the work of Christ on calvary. Remain blessed always and best regards.

Great hub, I enjoyed the content. Gives great clarity to Matthew 6:33, to seek first THE KINGDOM OF GOD and HIS RIGHTEOUSNESS. When we are successful to put on HIS "fine linen" or righteousness, only then can we hope to show forth the glory of God in the earth; as we let HIM shine through our earth.
