SIGNS of "Christian" Cults

Beware of False Prophets
Beware of False Prophets

How do we recognize a deceived Christian?

Many today profess to be “Christians”. How can all these people be Christians when there are some very marked and serious differences in their foundational beliefs? What are the differences? In this hub we will look at the signs of TRUE Christians and DECEIVED Christians.

The Word says, “Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God; because many false prophets have gone out into the world. By this you know the Spirit of God: every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God; and every spirit that does not confess Jesus is not from God; this is the spirit of the antichrist, of which you have heard that it is coming, and now it is already in the world." (1 John 4:1-3). This passage is not just speaking of heavenly spirits, but the spirit influencing the false prophets out in the world.

The spirit of antichrist mimics Christ. Rev 22:16 states, "I, Jesus, have sent My angel to testify to you these things for the churches. I am the root and the descendant of David, the bright morning star."

Compare this truth with the counterfeit found in Isa 14:12 "How you have fallen from heaven, O star of the morning, son of the dawn!” Is this speaking of Jesus falling from heaven? No; it's speaking of Lucifer, the Antichrist.

So what about fallen angels? Check this out: Gal 1:8 "But even if we, or an angel from heaven, should preach to you a gospel contrary to what we have preached to you, he is to be accursed!"

Why is it so hard to discern which prophet is true and which is false? Because the Bible says that “Satan disguises himself as an angel of light, and so do his servants” (2 Cor 7:14-15). This “light” is the very same meaning as used when Jesus said, “I am the light of the world” (John 8:12).

Mat 24:24 states, "For false Christs and false prophets will arise and will show great signs and wonders, so as to mislead, if possible, even the elect."

Rev 13:6 states, "And he opened his mouth in blasphemies against God, to blaspheme His name and His tabernacle, that is, those who dwell in heaven." Do you remember that Jesus was accused of "blasphemy" because of "claiming to be God"? This is what the spirit of antichrist does!

The antichrist is prophesied to be able to deceive the whole world (except for true Christians) in Rev 13:8 "All who dwell on the earth will worship him, everyone whose name has not been written from the foundation of the world in the book of life of the Lamb who has been slain."

John 8:44 states about Satan that "He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth because there is no truth in him. Whenever he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own nature, for he is a liar and the father of lies." I don't know if you've ever known a good liar, or even an excellent one. The best ones can deceive even the best people, especially good people who are trusting. So, how about the father of lies?!

Satan quotes the Word of God!

But how can a false prophet even speak God’s holy words, you ask? Well, let’s first look at the Devil tempting Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden. He used God’s very own words to tempt them. In Genesis 3:1, the “serpent” said to Eve, “Indeed, has God said, ‘You shall not eat from ANY TREE of the garden?” (suggestive twisting/distortion) Eve, speaking back the exact word of God says, “From the fruit of the trees of the garden we may eat; but from the fruit of THE TREE which is in the middle of the garden, God has said, ‘You shall not eat from it or touch it, lest you die.” (Eve spoke the truth) The serpent then told her, “You surely shall not die!” (insinuating God is a liar!).

Look at Jesus’ experience with the Devil when He was tempted by him in the desert for 40 days. In Luke 4:9-11, verses 10-11 quotes Satan as saying, “for it is written, ‘HE WILL GIVE HIS ANGELS CHARGE CONCERNING YOU TO GUARD YOU, and ‘ON THEIR HANDS THEY WILL BEAR YOU UP, LEST YOU STRIKE YOUR FOOT AGAINST A STONE.’”. Indeed, Satan was quoting the prophecy written in the Old Testament in Psalm 91:11 accurately! His motive, though, was to tempt Jesus to throw himself down off the pinnacle of the temple on which he stood!

Jesus answered him in Luke 4:12 with scripture: “It is said, ‘YOU SHALL NOT PUT THE LORD YOUR GOD TO THE TEST’”. Just as Satan quoted Psalm 91:11, Jesus answered with Psalm 91:12. Did you notice that Satan only quoted verse 11 and neglected verse 12? This is common with Christian cults who also do the same!!

Here's just one actual example of a cult follower that wrote to me, and my answer to him:

"You need to start believing these verses of Scripture and not what you THINK it's supposed to mean! It says the inhabitants of the WORLD. When? When Thy judgments are in the earth. Now who does that include? The whole earth, all the inhabitants of the whole world, to me that is everybody. You say, ‘no it’s not.’ Well to me it is, I’m sorry you are going to have to show me a verse that says, when His judgments are in the earth, NOT all the inhabitants of the whole world will learn righteousness. Do you have a Scripture that says that? ‘No.’

Here is my response: You are quoting Isaiah 26:9 and you asked me to show you a verse that says, when His judgments are in the earth, NOT all the inhabitants of the whole world will learn righteousness. I do have that verse! Read the VERY NEXT VERSE, verse 10, and I quote the Word, "Though the wicked is shown favor (the Jews are God's favored), He does NOT learn righteousness; He deals unjustly in the land of uprightness, And does not perceive the majesty of the LORD."

Because of Satan, false prophets distort the Word of God. The Bible warns us of such things to come: 2 Peter 2:16-17 in regard to all the letters written by the Apostle Paul, "in which are some things hard to understand, which the untaught and unstable distort, as they do also the rest of the Scriptures, to their own destruction. You therefore, beloved, knowing this beforehand, be on your guard lest, being carried away by the error of unprincipled men, you fall from your own steadfastness, but grow in the grace of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To Him be the glory, both now and to the day of eternity. Amen."

Ph 3:9 "Their destiny is destruction, their god is their stomach, and their glory is in their shame. Their mind is on earthly things."
Ph 3:9 "Their destiny is destruction, their god is their stomach, and their glory is in their shame. Their mind is on earthly things."

SIGNS of "Christian" Cults

So what is the definition of “Cult”:

French & Latin; French culte, from Latin cultus care, adoration, from colere to cultivate — more at wheel

Date:1617

1: formal religious veneration : worship 2: a system of religious beliefs and ritual ; also : its body of adherents 3: a religion regarded as unorthodox or spurious ; also : its body of adherents 4: a system for the cure of disease based on dogma set forth by its promulgator <health cults> 5 a: great devotion to a person, idea, object, movement, or work (as a film or book) ; especially : such devotion regarded as a literary or intellectual fad b: the object of such devotion c: a usually small group of people characterized by such devotion.

What are the signs of a Christian cult?

Not ALL cults have ALL these signs; this is a collaboration of some of things I myself have concluded upon exposure to these false prophets:

  1. THIS IS A MATTER OF LIFE AND DEATH: They deny the divinity of Christ and exalt man's divinity.
  2. They distort the scriptures, leading to their destruction. The antichrist is said to "go to destruction" (Rev 17:11)
  3. They prey on innocent minds (those who are not learned in the scriptures).
  4. They have ONE leader that founded their doctrine; some even say an angel appeared to their leader to give him the "right interpretation" of the Bible. One I know of is re-writing the Bible into the Concordant Literal Translation (CLT)...still a work-in-progress.
  5. This ONE leader’s interpretation of scripture is typically published in a book, books, magazines/study guides, or even a website of their one "teacher". The less one actually picks up the Bible, the more dangerous it is.
  6. Their leader's prophecies do not come true; therefore, the prophecy is changed. God "changes His mind" several times.
  7. They are focused on works and/or rituals in order to "earn their way" into God's favor, or pay Him back for saving them.
  8. They consider the 144,000 elect of their particular doctrine or church.
  9. They don’t associate with those outside of their church’s beliefs and practices.
  10. Their church demands money from them.

What do TRUE Christians Believe?

What does the Bible say about each of these things? There are many scriptures addressing each one, but I will, for the sake of summary, choose but a couple each. Rather than type out every reference here, I would exhort you to grab a BIBLE and READ them first-hand!!

  1. The Divinity of Christ: read my hub Let Me Tell You WHO GOD IS! / Exalt man's divinity: Genesis 3:5
  2. They distort the scriptures: 2 Peter 3:16-17
  3. They prey on innocent minds: Hosea 4:6
  4. They have ONE leader that founded their doctrine: Proverbs 11:14; Galatians 1:8
  5. One leader’s interpretation published in a book, books, magazines/study guides, or a particular website of that "teacher": 2 Peter 1:20 and Revelation 22:18-19
  6. Their leader's prophecies do not come true or are changed: Jeremiah 14:14-18; Ezekiel 13:1-8
  7. They are focused on works or rituals: Mark 7:1-30, Ephesians 2:9
  8. They consider the 144,000 are of their church: read my hub on The Elect of God
  9. They don’t associate with those outside of their church: Luke 19:1-10
  10. Their church demands money from them: read my hub Tithing, Giving and Alms

The WAY to the TRUTH

When cults accuse true Christianity of being a "cult" or "sect", let's read what Paul has to say about that: Acts 24:13-15 "Nor can they prove to you the charges of which they now accuse me. But this I admit to you, that according to the Way which they call a sect I do serve the God of our fathers..."

Let me leave you with these scriptures in closing:

Ephesians 4:14: “…we are no longer to be children, tossed here and there by waves, and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men, by craftiness in deceitful scheming, but speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in all aspects into Him, who is the head, even Christ.”

John 14:6 "Jesus answered, 'I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.'" Amen.

What is so scary about this is that Satan knows the scriptures better than the best church ministers. We all need to stay to the true doctrine and to do that is to keep to the true Bible principles plain and simple. Steer away from cults who claim that theirs is the Bible. Make sure their Bible, if a person suspects it not the truth, that it predates to the time at least of when first printed when the true churches were formed. Because other churches that did not preach His gospel according to His apostles branched off and formed their churches and bibles based on their humanism, not the divine teachings of Christ.

Amen, sister Sciantel. Mormonism wasn't founded until the 1800's. I don't know the founding dates of Jehovah's Witnesses or Seventh Day Adventists, let alone bibletruths.com (L. Ray Smith). These are just a few cults I am aware of. I'm sure there are many more.

Charles Manson, I can't believe convinced people he was Jesus Christ, and even got them to break the commandment of God, "Thou Shalt Not KILL". The demonic world is real, and everything the Bible states is 100% truth (when utilizing the original languages of Hebrew and Greek). It says people will be deceived by false prophets and we see it as it is stated. It's grievous to God and grievous to His children, because we desire as He does that all will come to the REAL JESUS and be saved!!

Satan knows the scriptures and changes one word to twist the meaning of a verse. That is what he did in the Garden of Eden with Eve. My book Spiritual Warfare: A Handbook is about the Fallen Angels and their relationship with the human race. http://www.amazon.com/Spiritual-Warfare-Handbook-L...

Thank you for this wonderful and enlightening hub.

When God created us He never intended that we as His children should conform to the ways of the world. He created us in His image to be “transformed by the renewing” of the mind . To continuously grow in grace and the knowledge of His Word. To diligently study His scriptures so we could draw closer to Him. It is so important to speak the TRUTH of God’s WORD. To know His WORD. Not in a legalistic rigid way. But in a way that helps us embrace who JESUS is.

I keep the 1st chapter of Galatians in mind. Jesus gave HIMSELF to keep us from being deceived… There is a lot of error inside and outside the walls going on today. Embraced by unknowing Christians who say they believe? I believe ALL of GOD”S WORD. We are living in some interesting times. As each day passes I am thankful to see just how gracious and patient God is. We are to point others to Jesus Christ who is the WAY. Many do not realize it but we are daily losing our rights to freely worship the Lord in Spirit and TRUTH. He does want us to be deceived. This is why He has given us all HIS COMFORTER. This is why we must ask daily for Him to fill us. It is important to keep in mind that God knows our TRUE intentions if it is not to give Him GLORY it is in vain.

Thank you for this hub. It is important to encourage others to develop a growing relationship with the Lord and not be deceived.

How to discern the counterfeit from the authentic? It's a challenging topic that you chose to tackle Carrie. No doubt you leave yourself wide open as the cult followers post a sign on this hub and others like it, "Open Season." But that's the blessing that comes with the territory for those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake. We live in an age where we are inundated with every kind of false teaching coming down the Cultic pike. I can only pray for your protection. By the way, the Christian Cult check list and Belief list is most helpful. Keep on hubbing and God bless you.

DeBorrah, what you say is so comforting, as I shouted out to the Lord the other day in dispair for what appears to be multitudes following after the antichrist and false prophet. God's Word has always been here for this generation as well as thousands of generations.

The Word says in 2 Timothy 4:3 (ISV) "For the time will come when people will not tolerate healthy doctrine, but with itching ears will surround themselves with teachers who cater to their people's own desires."

Jesus saved a lost sheep like me in an instant, and He can do the same for anyone who will simply ask Him to come into their hearts, fill them with His Holy Spirit and guide them into all truth. Even just one-on-one with the Lord. They need to pull away from these "churches" for a time to seek the Lord and He is faithful to save them and deliver them!! Amen!!

Carrie Bradshaw profile image

Carrie Bradshaw 7 years ago from Manhattan Author

oscarwms, I praise God for your confirmation. With everything I write I revere our God and make certain as I can possibly be that it is soundly based on His Bible alone. Each false church observes some of the truth (which is the "sheep's clothing"), but that's what "missing the mark" is all about; the worst being missing the mark of the real Jesus Christ! That's a fatal mistake!

SirDent 7 years ago

I have noticed lately how church doctrine is preached more than the Word of God toward people. It seems many have stopped reaching out to the lost these days. They would rather gain a member of their congregation than gain a soul for the Kingdom of God.

Many say it doesn't matter what name is over the door outside and I agree with that, what is preached inside does make a big difference. The Word of God is what it takes toi put conviction yupon those who are lost and also strengthen those who are weak or hurting.

Gicky, as I believe we are of the Lion of Judah, who is of the lineage of King David, the very boy who stood alone to face the giant for the sake of freeing his people, we have his heart! We have NO FEAR in God's perfect love. Our God is an AWESOME GOD and REIGNS over every false god out there. Imagine that just one angel of God, Michael, will bind the Devil himself (just ONE ANGEL OF GOD!) and throw him into the pit! God has myriads of angels who watch over us day and night. I am so thankful we can even walk into the fiery furnace and into the lion's den and HAVE NO FEAR. The righteous shall live by FAITH and that FAITH is in WHO HE IS. If we serve a false Christ, we will have NO POWER over evil, and men are their strength...NO MATCH for our AWESOME GOD. AMEN!!

Carrie Bradshaw profile image

Carrie Bradshaw 7 years ago from Manhattan Author

SirDent, Amen. When we seek first His kingdom and the righteousness that comes through Christ alone, and walk by faith without wavering, it is a powerful witness. We have His heart, a heart that loves enough to speak the truth in love. While it may hurt, it heals stronger than before. To "love" someone into a cult is Satan's tactic, for the "love" of the world is hostility toward God, if we don't have their salvation at heart.

God isn't found in a church. The church is in YOU and if you don't invite Him into YOUR CHURCH, you may very well be following an alter-god. He needs to come into our hearts and then He will live through us. Amen!

You are right about the multitudes... LORD HELP US!

On the other hand it just confirms that GOD IS AWESOME and His Word is true!

That time is now. There are many itching ears...

Be encouraged in the Lord. It is important to Stand on HIS WORD. When we do this we are not alone. When we walk by FAITH our TRUST in HIM deepens immensely! "Greater is He that is in you than he that is in the world" PRAISE GOD!

Blessings

And again

Thank You!

I had someone tell me that in their religion only 144,000 people would make it to heaven and it was going to be them. I asked her where did she think she was going because I was sure that 144,000 have already died.

Carrie Bradshaw profile image

Carrie Bradshaw 7 years ago from Manhattan Author

ftgfmom, Yes, this is a sad doctrine, for the Bible shows so many in heaven that they couldn't be counted. First, the 144,000 are counted, then multitudes from every nation, and all tribes, and peoples and tongues in Revelation 7:4-10. Regarding those who are sealed, it goes beyond the 144,000 when we look up "sealed" in the Bible. There are several scriptures that show anyone who is His is sealed (believers), but here's just one: Eph 4:30 "Do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption."

You said:

"God has said, ‘You shall not eat from it or touch it, lest you die.” The serpent then tells her, “You surely shall not die!” (LIE)."

To which I reply:

(Ignoring all the symbolism and instead interpreting this literally) Adam and Eve both ate the fruit... and did not die. So it appears God was lying and Satan wasn't.

I never quite got this...even when you interpret the scripture symbolically. Why did God originally try to shield his creations from the knowledge of good and evil...to the point of telling them they'd die.

Carrie Bradshaw profile image

Carrie Bradshaw 7 years ago from Manhattan Author

pjk_artist, you are assuming they would die instantly, as with the case of Ananias & Sapphira in Acts 5. We know 1 Cor 20:22 states, "For as in Adam all die, so in Christ all will be made alive." We don't know if Adam and Eve were supposed to live forever on earth, or whether God was speaking of spiritual death for all eternity. It is a mystery. Satan is not telling the truth, for the Bible also states that he is the "father of lies". He can indeed quote scripture, but will twist its interpretation, as he did with Jesus in the desert. I hope that helps.

This is a really thorough hub. We have a home assembly and some have tried to label us a cult. It is not. There is no organization, no special buidling, no money, and no books (other than the Bible). It is spirit led which means it convenes when anyone has a need to have it and it ends whenever it is done. There is no schedule of worship. It's just a matter of coming together, assembling, when someone, anyone, expresses a need for it. All present have a voice. There is no doctrine deemed right and wrong in order to assemble. Anyone from any faith can praise the Lord and study the Bible. When people feel uncomfortable with the format, the openness, they usually just don't ask again. Many however, especially when they are going through things, come and request. Whoever is present is expected to stop what they are doing to aid that person's search for help. Nothing in our lives should be so busy that we cannot stop and assist a person in spiritual distress, or just needing the joy of assembling.

A M Werner, it certainly sounds like a fellowship of the Lord! People are welcome to come or not to, but your doors are open and the willingness is there to minister to all who have needs. I have a hub on my other profile here on HubPages (Judah's Daughter) called "Sword of the Spirit" that outlines true and false biblical doctrines (based on thorough study thus far) ~ doctines of hell and doctrines that simply "miss the mark". If you get a chance to read it, I would love your feedback! God bless you so much!

The scripture makes the definition of a christian cult very obvious. Anyone or anything who denys that Jesus is The Christ it a cult, deciever, false religion, etc.. Which begs the question, Just what is the Christ ??? Who is the Christ ?? Who did Jesus say he was and for what was he sent into the world ?? Did the Father send the son on a mission ?? those who read answer me these things.. Is Jesus the word spoken of by the prophets of old ?? Will that word fail ??Seems that is the question here.. Will the gift of God bite us on the ass or heal us ?? Who is the serpent ?? Who has the greater power ?? he who struck our heal or him who was sent to restore and reconcile ?? Did Adam cloth himself or did his Father ??? Is there hope for anyone except the Father cloth them ?? Did God promise to protect Cain ?? what protect a murderer ??? Perhaps God will yet make Cain new .. Can God do that ??? Oh the lack of faith in these the last of the last days...

seekeroftruth, Universal salvation is a LIE. God's Word is TRUTH. Jesus is the TRUTH. Jesus said in John 3:16 "For God so loved [agapao] the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that WHOSOEVER BELIEVES IN HIM, should not perish, but have everlasting life."

Jesus also said we are able to reject His Word, the Word by which we will be judged (John 12:48).

Jesus said you WANT TO DO the will of your father, the devil. (John 8:44)

Jesus commands us to repent and His Word says the "god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelieving" (2 Cor 4:4). Is God's power not greater than Satan's? Do you believe this? Has He given you the ability to believe? Then, repent and be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. (Acts 2:38)

WHEN ARE WE COMMANDED TO REPENT? NOW. Acts 17:30-31 "Therefore having overlooked the times of ignorance, God is NOW declaring to men that all people everywhere SHOULD repent, because He has fixed a day in which He will judge the world in righteousness through a Man whom He has appointed, having furnished PROOF TO ALL MEN by raising Him from the dead."

Raising Him from the dead is proof enough! God draws ALL MEN to salvation from the time He was lifted up from the earth; not when we are lifted up from the earth. (John 12:32)

Romans 10:9 "If you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved."

Ephesians 2:8 "For by grace are you saved through faith"

Romans 10:17 "So faith comes from hearing, and hearing by the word of Christ."

I pray you submit to the will of God concerning you.

You've called Ray a cult but why? Nothing here seems to apply to Ray unless of course point 5 where you insinuated that Ray could be a cult because he has his whole website dedicated to teaching God's word. As opposed to your little account in hubpages, shared by many?

I am sorry but that is seriously grasping at straws!! You are teaching God's word online too. Does it matter how big or exclusive the medium is? What is the difference there? I genuinely don't see it.

So they are more likely a cult if they have their own website but less of one if they join a forum/social networking platform?

Last I checked, you have 203 followers Carrie! 203 more than Ray! Also, you've commercialized your page and making money from advertisements here but Ray has not! More cult-like don't you think? Ironic how the word 'followers' is actually really used here in hubpages. God does work in mysterious ways!

Ok, unless point 5 is talking about ministering to people in general. So written ministry is more likely a cult as opposed to verbal ministry?

No?

So is the problem here really about spreading 'one leader's' interpretation? Pray tell, where did YOU get your interpretation of the bible from? And all the things you teach here, they must be your interpretation right? You are teaching and expounding biblical passages according to your interpretation.

Unless you are possessed by the original writers of the books everytime you read the bible, your beliefs are your own interpretation or those of bible translators.

I really can't see the difference between Ray Smith and yourself (besides you having proper followers and making money off this). In fact, many readers of Ray Smith have claimed they are not a follower of Ray but of God.

I read, enjoy and believe what my biology textbook tells me but I sure don't follow the author or treat them as my leader!

weirdedout, Let's list a few "cult" characteristics regarding L. Ray Smith:

1. Divinity: L. Ray Smith and his followers are unclear as to Who the Holy Spirit is. Will you tell me what you believe, weirdedout? He doesn't believe Jesus is actually God either, but separate from and lesser than God.

2. L. Ray Smith distorts the scriptures constantly. The biggest abomination is that he believes and teaches all will be saved, most after physical death through the Lake of Fire. This is a LIE that will send all who wait to eternal condemnation.

3. L. Ray Smith preys on innocent minds (those who are not learned in the Scriptures). I know my Scriptures and therefore, Ray cannot prey on my mind; how many challenge him as I have done in several of my hubs with inductive study of the Bible? If they did, they'd know better.

4. Who is re-writing the Bible into the Concordant Literal Translation (CLT)...still a work-in-progress? My "followers" don't follow me; they follow the Bible and confirm what is written. We don't have a common denominator, man or website, from which we are fed. That's the miracle of confirming truth.

5. L. Ray Smith's interpretation of scripture is published only on bibletruths.com (his own website). He is a religious teacher, not just writing "hubs" for whosoever wishes to read and comment. If he doesn't claim a particular church doctrine, but only that of his own interpretation, he is in violation of 2 Peter 1:20. What is taught should be confirmed by members of other Bible-believing churches...not just bibletruths.com.

6. L. Ray Smith teaches FEW are chosen now, but EVERYONE WILL BE SAVED after physical death, including Satan and his angels. This is a LIE.

You might be interested to know that L. Ray Smith came out of Armstrongism, another cult. One of his ex-followers and HubPages member, yes2truth (who also came out of Armstrongism), while he's still a Universalist, exposed L. Ray Smith as a "legalist blasphemer" on this link: http://herbertwarmstrongliveson.blogspot.com/

You can check out my three hubs refuting the doctrine of L. Ray Smith: "Refute of Salvation for All Doctrine"; "Scriptures Inspired for the L. Ray Smith Followers"; and "Salvation: Unless God DRAG Us?". You might be enlightened by what you read.

This hub is not specifically geared toward L. Ray Smith. He is a cult leader, without a doubt. There are several out there (Mormons, Jehovah's Witnesses and SDA to name a few).

I just stay away from Organized Religion. Organized Religion & Politics. Organized anything else. Jesus said there would be two types of people, those who heard his sayings that keep them, and those who heard his sayings & do not keep them.

Jesus instructed his original disciples about the Spiritual Kingdom of Heaven/God that is not of the world of man, this world. It isn't my job to judge them, but my free will allows me to say, no thanks.

In this world it is difficult to Know what is or isn't a Cult at all whether it has to do with any Religion, Politics, Business, or Education of any sort at all.

It is difficult to know what all isn't brainwashing from the time of birth by this world, the world of man. Jesus instructed his disciples they had to seek & find the Kingdom so a little game of hide & seek as the Kingdom of Heaven/God is not of the world of man, this world.

Jesus was playing Hide & Seek in Israel. From his disciples he hid not the Kingdom, but for most everyone else the Kingdom was hidden. Jesus told them the truth, and said he did not hide anything from them, but they could see the Kingdom, because it was not the Kingdom they were seeking.

I don't belong to any of the world of man's history because I belong to the Kingdom. I don't belong to any of the world of man's politics upon the earth because I belong to the Kingdom. I don't belong to any of the world of man's Religions because I belong to the Kingdom. This world is neither here nor there to me as the sequential order of events merely lead to the day of Judgment where it is either the Forgiveness of the Lamb, or the Wrath of the Lion.

So it isn't my job to judge this world. I merely do not have to contend with this world other than to pay my bills, obey the the law, render unto Caesar what is Caesar's, and die.

But in between the time I was born & now I've had a lot fun. Jesus said there will be two types of people. Those who hear his sayings & keep them, and those who hear his sayings & do not keep them. So all arguments are moot points to me as long as I keep his sayings.

Chief Apathetic, Thank you for your true comments. The Word says we are to "test the spirits to see whether they are from God" and "the spirits of the prophets are subject to the prophets". We are to be like those in Berea that received the Word with eagerness, but searched the Scriptures daily to see whether what they were told was truth (1 John 4:1; 1 Cor 14:32; Acts 17:11).

I'd like to expound on why many do not understand the Word of God. It is found in John 8:43-44 "Why do you not understand what I am saying? It is because you cannot hear My word. You are of your father the devil, and your will is to do your father’s desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, and has nothing to do with the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks out of his own character, for he is a liar and the father of lies."

When we are adopted from the devil's family into God's by His grace through faith in Jesus Christ, we receive His Spirit of adoption whereby we cry out, "Abba, Father" (Romans 8:15; Galatians 4:6).

Knowing we are saved by His grace through faith (Eph 2:8) and that faith comes by hearing the Word of God (Romans 10:17), we are to obey the Great Commission ~ to go into all the world and spread the gospel of salvation. This is the sowing of the Seed and God is the One Who brings the increase (Mark 16:15; Acts 1:8; Luke 18:11; 1 Cor 3:7).

A fellow Hubber named "no body" wrote an excellent hub called "Only One Crown" http://hubpages.com/religion-philosophy/Only-One-C , which would be an awesome read. It's about being satisfied with one's own salvation and not bearing fruit of bringing others to Christ, resulting in "only one crown" in the kingdom of God. Be blessed!

Carrie, there just is that time when God puts an end to things & of course Jesus being one with the Father is in complete agreement with the Father in all things so it is Jesus who puts an end to all things eventually as man of himself cannot do these things.

The Spiritual Curse that Jesus leveled upon the this world that he came not to give peace to this world but to take peace from this world with a sword, or Spiritual Sword.

It's all very fun.

AMEN, Chief Apathetic. We fight a good fight while we're here with weapons that are not of this world (for His kingdom is not of this world) ~ but one day, our testimony will actually be one that works against those who defy the Truth that has come to them. Jesus said in John 12:47-48, "If anyone hears My sayings and does not keep them, I do not judge him; for I did not come to judge the world, but to save the world. He who rejects Me and does not receive My sayings, has one who judges him; the word I spoke is what will judge him at the last day." Praise God. Thank you for coming by :-)

Point 1,2 - It is a case of your interpretation of the bible against his. He has as many scriptures to back up his beliefs as you do. Who is right, only God truly knows.

Point 3 - He basically stated his views on a webpage (as did you). To claim that he is preying on innocent minds, you'd have to admit you're doing the same too.

Remember that Ray stands by his doctrines as much as you do.

Unless you can prove that he is intentionally and maliciously lying to mislead the public, you can't possibly accuse him of preying on innocent minds! He believes what he teaches is the truth. As do you.

Point 4 - I don't know about CLT but I am sure that the bible you have been reading had also been rewritten since the original manuscripts. Ray's readers follow the bible and confirm what is written too. What proof do you have that they follow Ray? Just because they came to the same conclusions Ray did? So if I agree with you on Hell and a bunch of other doctrines (as many of your 'followers' do), does it mean I follow you? Or am 'fed' by you? What if you happen to be the only 'Christian' page I read online regularly? Change things much?

Point 5 - you said his interpretation are only found in bibletruths.com but then you also claimed he is a Universalist and we know there are hundreds of Universalist pages (or people with similar beliefs) online. His page is also available for people who wish to read and comment. Like your hubs. And he does claim particular church doctrines like Jesus died for our sins, tithing is unscriptural, etc. Of course everything he writes on his site is his interpretation, much like the articles on your hubs are your interpretation!

Point 6 - For every scripture you can quote that this is a lie, Ray can quote another showing this is the truth.

I don't know if Ray came out from a cult or not but if he did, isn't that a good thing? He must have been 'enlightened' to some extent to leave a cult! So you are saying he left a cult to form another cult with the exact same teachings? Doesn't make sense.

Who is yes2truth anyway? Ray is a legalist blasphemer just because this yes2truth guy says so? I know of many who can 'expose' your doctrines as heresy as well. Does that make them so?

weirdedout, God holds every man accountable for his beliefs. He knows if you are studying on your own, testing what is taught, or simply being led around by every wind of doctrine, choosing one that fits your fancy. If you don't know how to study to prove a prophet true or false, you are remaining a baby and immature, per Ephesians 4:11-16:

"And He gave some as apostles, and some as prophets, and some as evangelists, and some as pastors and teachers, for the equipping of the saints for the work of service, to the building up of the body of Christ; until we all attain to the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a mature man, to the measure of the stature which belongs to the fullness of Christ

As a result, we are no longer to be children, tossed here and there by waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men, by craftiness in deceitful scheming; but speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in all aspects into Him who is the head, even Christ, from whom the whole body, being fitted and held together by what every joint supplies, according to the proper working of each individual part, causes the growth of the body for the building up of itself in love."

As I said, my readers come from all kinds of churches and backgrounds, and all who are firm in the Word of God confirm what is written here. L. Ray Smith has his own followers and he is not confirmed a true prophet because he is of his own interpretation, not confirmed by the whole body of Christ (those outside his teaching).

If you are interested to witness what it is to inductively study and find the results, just read my hubs on Judah's Daughter: two I recommend, that show inductive study, are "How To Do an Inductive Bible Study" and "Can I Get a Witness?!"

I am a teacher of the Bible, yes. I take this very seriously, for the Bible says in James 3:1 "Let not many of you become teachers, my brethren, knowing that as such we will incur a stricter judgment."

Paul told Timothy also he was to "Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth." (2 Tim 2:15).

I am here to serve. Whatever is true will remain with you, for it does not return to the Lord void.

This was awesome Carrie! You hit the nail on the head.

I was a Jehovah's Witness for 35 years, and became born again in Christ last year. When God draws you--it is like a supernatural magnetic "pull" that becomes an almost overwhelming "hunger" for TRUTH that you absolutely cannot deny! A craving only Christ can fill!

And then the peace that Jesus promises rests upon you, and the love--it is indescribable!

I now know and discern the truth in what you write, and sister--you blow me away!

You have a beautiful heart and a beautiful Ministry!

Thank you for your confirmation, sister Laurie! You know me also as Judah's Daughter!! lol I just commented to you on my "Comment Coloseum" hub that I finally separated the "debate" hubs such as these in this profile with those that are focused on ministering to the saints (Judah's Daughter)!!

I so rejoice with you that God was faithful to call you out of darkness into His marvelous Light, and you shine, dear one; He shines through you!! Your testimony is anointed and strong, bright and true ~ ON THE MARK!! Jesus Christ, our Lord, our God, our Savior is the BULLSEYE! Faith is the arrow that carries His Word straight to the heart of those who will hear. You heard; you responded; you are set free and are walking in such a powerful calling. I love you so much!!!

Even though i was loathe to admit it to him in the spirit of diplomacy this man is extremely racist! and what's more he does it all in the name of christ!!! even though it isn't even in my hub this man actually said that blacks have the smallest brains! now im not a black supremist nor am i even fully black but even i had to take offense to that.

Well, I can say that if the "white race" were so intelligent, they wouldn't be ignornantly diminishing their "race". I believe we are all created equal because we all have the same parents and Creator God as Father. I happen to be white, of European descent, and have an inter-racial daughter (father is black/white). She made the honor roll. And look at you! You are far beyond where I ever was at your age. Dear sister Carrie I love the way that you put your point across to those who choose to mock what you so correctly write. May God bless you abundantly for your work in sharing His love here on HP.

Straight and narrow is the road to Salvation. But broad is the way to destruction. As the signs of times are imprinted on the hearts of the TRUE followers of Christ. So the deception of the enemy takes roots in the hearts of the unsaved.

I personally would rather be in the shoes of those who never believed than in the shoes of the ones teaching the false doctrines and leading the true seekers astray. We are warned about leading our Fathers sheep astray. I love the part where God says vengence is mine and i will repay. There are a lot of people who are in for a heck of a shock.

I love you sister as Judahsdaughter and am privileged to have found you here. All Glory to God.

Blessings and Hugs..

I love Loves to Read! Thank you so much. If you want to see down and dirty, this is the site! I finally just couldn't put this poisonous stuff with the hubs for the saints. I pray the saints that wish to read are enlightened to the darkness that's out there, for how great is that darkness!

You are so right about rather being one who doesn't know anything than to be one that's been deceived. God does say He allows people to be more and more deceived, harden their hearts and seal their condemnation. It all starts with their attitude toward God. Do they love Him? Do they submit to Authority? Do they abhor evil? Or do they embrace it?

As long as we are given another day, dear Loves to Read, we will testify to the Truth, for the Truth sets all who will receive it FREE of their burdens, bondage, fear, hatred, lies and the father of LIES, who leads them straight to his future home ~ HELL. That's a four-letter word to these haters of God, and it's meant to be so.

God Reigns, and THE King deserves our praise, our worship, our love, our gratitude, our humility, our devotion and thanksgiving! It all starts with the heart. May God bless you!! I appreciate you so much!!

Jerahmeel Joshua 4 years ago

Thank you for posting this one..I'm blessed to have come across this page. You have made me examine the things that Satan himself is doing well using religion particularly Christianity as a means to deceive thousands of people including the elect. Been closely studying a lot of cult profiles and for some reasons I need a lot of help knowing my close friend belongs to a cult and God is giving me a burden to speak to her about what the truth really is. Satan is really well equipped with his deceptive mind controlling tactics. May the Lord full of grace and mercy open her mind and let His holy spirit teach and bring her to the saving power of Jesus. Thank you! God bless you more...

Carrie Bradshaw profile image

Carrie Bradshaw 4 years ago from Manhattan Author

Well you KNOW, Jerahmeel Joshua, that Satan's Antichrist will call himself "Christ" and thus his followers will call themselves "Christians" - while professing 'Christians' may out-shine confessing Christians, God sees the hearts and knows who are His. If it weren't for these common things the majority of cults do (outside of obvious occultism type rituals), it may be hard to tell true and false Christians apart. Wheat and tares look very much alike as they grow ~ until the harvest ~ and that great Harvest Day is coming! I pray God deliver those who truly love Him and are deceived by these wolves in sheeps' clothing. I hope this hub will help pave the way out. Thank you for the blessings, Jerahmeel Joshua. Bless your heart. God is faithful to those who love Him! He will deliver them and then....He will use them mightily as ministers to those that are yet enslaved! I've witnessed this and rejoice in it!!!

Lone Ranger 4 years ago

Dear Carrie:

I am sure you already know this, but for the sake of your visitors, I thought it might be convenient to bundle the SDA movement, Christian-Science, Mormonism and Jehova Witness's together for an "at a glance" comparison:

Christian Science - founded in 1879 by Mary Baker Eddy.

LDS Church (Mormons) - founded in 1830 by Joseph Smith, Jr.

Jehova Witnesses - founded in 1879 by Charles Taze Russell.

Seventh Day Adventists - founded in 1863 by Ellen Gould White and James White.

I think it should be of particular interest that each of these "cults", rely upon ONE individual as their source of inspiration.

Mary Baker Eddy who founded the Christian-Science movement heard voices; Ellen Gould White, who founded the Seventh-Day Adventist movement with her husband, claimed to see visions; and Joseph Smith, Jr., who founded the Latter-Day Saints movement, also claimed to see visions, hear voices, and receive revelations; while Charles Taze Russell, who founded the Jehova Witness movement, purported to receive "revelations".

It is also important to note that each of these religious "movements" rely upon extra-Biblical sources for their inspiration and justification for being the true Christian church.

For instance, the Mormons adhere strictly to the King James Bible and read from "The Book of Mormon", from the "Pearl of Great Price" and from "Doctrines and Covenants".

The Jehova Witnesses like the King James version of the Bible, but also had their own translation drafted, which they call "The New World Translation". They also read the revelations of Charles Taze Russell, Judge Rutherford and from all their leaders down through the ages who claimed to have had "revelations".

The Christian-Science movement reads from the writings and revelations of Mary Baker Eddy and from her "Science and Health With the Keys to The Scriptures".

The Seventh-Day Adventist church favors the King James translation and reads from the "testimonies" of Ellen Gould White, which are based on her self-proclaimed revelations and visions.

With special concern to the above (4) religious movements, it is important to note that within the realm of history, they all showed up within 50 years of each other, ranging from 1830 to 1879 A.D.

I think this is significant and when placing each of these movements "under a microscope" - similarities begin to present themselves. I think this can be explained by the workings of the devil in those days. It seems that certain "doctrine of demons" were making their rounds in those days and found fertile ground with these individuals and inspired their subsequent religious movements.

Please keep in mind that it was also during this time frame (the mid-1800's) that "Eugenics", "Evolution" and "Spiritism" also appeared on the scene.

Excellent Hub, Carrie, and may God bless you for this ministry - L.R.

Sadly my nephew is involved in a cult yet he doesn't know it. I know as a believer. All the warning signs are there. He went from AP courses in high school to college getting A's to failing school and now involved in a church. He only wants to hang with members of his church and he went from having graduate plans to now no plans unless it involves them. He has to consults GOD to do homework. He is always overly burdened. They make him feel guilty. They want him to change his address from our home to his church address. just what the church wants him to do. He is now in his early 20's. They recently asked him to go on a missions trip yet he is failing college and they are okay with this. He lied to us about what is going on.. We want him out of the state and into counseling but I need some advice on how to proceed. Some heavy mind control stuff going on.

L.R. I apologize for not checking my hub site more timely. This is where the 'ugly' stuff goes on, and I'm am more inclined to stay over on my Judah's Daughter site...

I just have to say, "YOU ARE AWESOME". I also, have noted the coincidence in the time-frame of the foundings of these cult doctrines...and what damage they have done and are yet doing. I wonder the number of people involved in each one? Masses, no doubt. Satan smiles...

I hope you become a hubber and share with me in the burden to deliver people out of false doctrines. You have studied to show yourself approved here, and it is obvious. Let God use you here!!! THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH for teaching me and all who read. AMAZING.

david, I'm sorry to hear about what's happening with your nephew!! Unfortunately, those who do not study the Word (the holy Bible) for themselves are easily swayed and eventually devoured by cults. We should pray that God send His messengers to your nephew!!

A lot of people involved in cults are eventually HURT by them and choose to leave on their own; however, they are sometimes so hurt they will not open their ears to the gospel. This is the damage Satan's wiles wreak.

Prayer is the key. Keep praying for him. Pray for God's ministers to surround him and help deliver him from captivity. My heart is with you and my prayers are for him, also.

SalvationPrayer on facebook- the one with a red cross for the Icon. Jesus Christ is Lord and Has come in the Flesh!!! Pray for the cults out there and learn how to show them what the real word of God says... Every soul is worth Saving and we need to do our part... We all fall short of the Glory, and I don't agree whatsoever with the JW, but I do believe that if us Christians got out there and witnessed door to door or just to hand out flyers ( maybe get a chance to talk to a few) the world would be a better place. I am also one to blame on this myself... God bless you all and if you need someone to talk to you can always message me on facebook. Have a great day!!

Well it's been 10 yrs. that we left our church ( our family ) in more ways than one. Other families that helped start this church have left. But once you leave they will never speak to again. Even your own family and grandparents. They take over finances and leave with little to live on, tell you are a controlling spirit because you have your spouce go to walmart every Friday and band you from ever going there again, tell you if you put your child in public school that you are sending them to hell or a slaughter house, they all moved on the same road and now are building a new church on the preachers property, which the preachers's are married but the wife is incontrol over everyone. I have seen others leave and their children's grandparents and Aunts and Unclse's still go there and even pass by their house everyday but will not even look at their own grandchildren wave as they are passing. My anger has returned but the hurt is worse. The kids are to suffer, because all they have ever know their ; friends are not allowed to speak to them. More was said but I could write a book on it. The final straw for my brother n law and his family to leave was when the female " preacher " told them they did not agree with there daughter dating a boy who doesn't go to the same church ... by they way their daught is 17 !! I am praying that others will open there eyes and see the deceptions by this. Their Church name is " His Love Christian Fellowship " . But where is the " Love" ??

Thank you for all you do may God be with these families and heal their pain.

Thanks again, Carrie R.

Salvation Prayer - thank you for sharing your heart. To love someone means to tell them (share with them) the Truth. Whether they 'hear' right now or not, when the day comes that they question and the LORD brings back to their remembrance what He said to them (through you, me or any of God's children), they will understand and be thankful. We were all enslaved to the world or to false doctrines at one time or another, and if God set us free, free indeed, He can and will do it for them. Thank you again, and God bless you.

reppert7 (Carrie R.), what IS it with the 'exclusives'? The control they instigate and exercise over others (and sure enough amongst themselves) is like what Jesus said in Mat 23:24 "Blind guides! You strain your water so you won't accidentally swallow a gnat, but you swallow a camel!"

When we quit putting people and groups in God's place; when we come to realize God Himself is enough for us; when we feel His presence, hear His voice, know His love and guidance...we will find contentment. Only in Him is peace made perfect. To cut off these 'limbs' that enslave us to sin gives us life, amen! Amen!!

Your testimony is precious, Carrie R. and you have many hearts who can relate and appreciate every single experience and how this has hurt your heart. That IS Satan's purpose, but actually, these things are driving you right into the arms of Jesus. That's right where we belong ~ all of God's children. God bless you, sister. God bless you more and more.

Interesting hub and a very important topic!

One of the best researchers I've ever read on the subject of cults in general is Margaret Thayer Singer. She talks about cults in a very broad way (as in corporations, sports teams, etc.) and in very specific ways in terms of psychologically detrimental Christian cults. Some of the characteristics are listed here: http://www.ex-cult.org/General/singer-conditions

In my opinion, Christians are most at risk for falling for one of these cults like Mormonism because the founders purposely masqueraded their evil origins behind a facade of Christianity. If Joseph Smith would have come straight out and said I founded a cult so I could have sex with lots of young girls and women and have people give me honor and riches, nobody would have joined. So, he had to say he had spoken to God and that he was given a special message. Then he told his followers they were special, too - (this is something child molesters and con artists say to their prey) and convinced them that he and he alone talked to God in the flesh.

The danger of Christian cults is that they pull a bait and switch on members. The Mormons and the Scientologists are master psychologists. They know what buttons to push and they know how to get people to do things they wouldn't do otherwise. By the time you find out what you're involved in it's too late (this is EXACTLY the case with the Endowment Ceremony in the temples - it's very shocking for members and many of them realize at that moment that they've been deceived, but they've been made to swear bloody oaths.)

To an extent, we are surrounded by cults and Christianity, itself, can be regarded as a cult by definition. But, the danger of this comes when you give your mind and your power away to someone or something outside yourself - when you let the cult start thinking for you. When they start taking your money and taking food out of your children's mouths, when they tell you how to dress, how to pray, what to say, etc. This is reaching the danger zone. So, it is important to be aware of what cults are... Awareness of how the run their game is important too... The Mormons, for example, are great salesmen. Those clean cut missionaries are nothing but glorified salesmen with a pitch.

So, whatever you do, keep your own mind and don't let con artists steal your wallet... that's my message!

If anyone asks you to come to their church, be sure to ask a lot of questions - and don't just accept the answers they give you. Do independent research outside the organization. Sometimes people are led astray by the Mormons because the stuff they're into is so crazy, it's hard for the average person to believe that what ex-members say about them isn't made up. It isn't. And, this is just one example. Always ask questions and if anyone discourages this, run!

Great article - good job keeping people aware and a vote up!
