Science and God
"But my life is worth nothing unless I use it for doing the work assigned me by the Lord Jesus Christ, the work of telling others the good News about God's wonderful kindness and love."
This hub is the first in a series of hubs that I wish to write which combines two of my greatest passions. First and most importantly, my love of God, the creator of the universe and my Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. The second is my love of science, every aspect of it, from anthropology to cosmology. Many believe that these two areas are in direct contradiction to each other, when in fact it is the exact opposite. Science and faith go hand in hand and I believe the more we learn about ourselves, the earth, the universe, the more we learn about the God who created it all and who set the laws of physics into motion.
"Science without religion is lame; religion without science is blind." Albert Einstein
The Universe and the Laws which Govern Them:
We'll start here. Let's just think about that for a moment. Scientists have learned, and it is generally believed that the universe began with one huge explosion of light and energy which we now call the Big Bang. Astrophysicist Robert Jastrow, a self-described agnostic, stated, "The seed of everything that has happened in the Universe was planted in that first instant; every star, every planet and every living creature in the Universe came into being as a result of events that were set in motion in the moment of the cosmic explosion...The Universe flashed into being, and we cannot find out what caused that to happen."
The universe did not always exist. There was a moment of creation and for there to be a moment of creation there had to have been something or someone that caused that. There has to be a Creator and that Creator is God.
Science has also shown us that the entire universe is governed by a series of physical laws and everything in creation must follow these laws. The law of gravity, the laws governing motion, etc. These laws are by no means necessary. The universe could just as easily exist without these laws and behave unpredictably. We could be living in a randomly chaotic universe but we aren't. That fact in itself is astounding when you think about it. There is no logical necessity for a universe that obeys rules, let alone one that abides by the rules of mathematics. Someone or something laid out these rules, these laws which govern all of creation and which took effect at the moment the universe flashed into being and that person is God. He created the universe and set the laws of physics into motion. How amazing is that!
The Word of God:
I believe the bible is the precise and accurate word of God in that everything that God intended to be in it, is. I also believe that it should be taken literally except in those cases when the context clearly states otherwise. The bible is made up of some 66 different books, written by 36 different men over a 1600 year period. ( 73 books in a Catholic Bible ) I believe that all scripture is inspired by God, written by the Holy Spirit through man that tells us about the world from the beginning of time until the future when there shall be a new Heaven and a new earth. As well, there are over 2500 prophecies in the bible of which 2000 have accurately and in precise detail come to pass, many years, sometimes centuries after they have been predicted. With this in mind, there is absolutely no reason to doubt the remaining 500 or so prophecies will come to pass in our lifetime and in the future. When you think about all the different authors, writing over such a long period without reading all the other materials ( manuscripts were not printed off and distributed like today)and consider that they all contain the same facts and prophecies then it is almost impossible not to believe that it was written by one person. The only explanation for that is that God is the one true author.
2 Timothy 3:16-17
" All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that all God's people may be thoroughly equipped for every good work."
2 Peter 1:20-21
" Above all, you must understand that no prophecy of Scripture came about by the prophet's own interpretation of things. For prophecy never had its origin in the human will, but prophets, though human, spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit. "
So far, every scientific discovery, every archaeological site has only served to prove the accuracy of the Bible as we'll get into in future hubs. With all the knowledge we've gained, with everything that we know about the earth and the universe, there has never been a single thing that contradicts the word of God! How amazing is that!
As a side, it is important to note that God has chosen to record specific events in the history of man. I believe this is for a specific purpose. There is obviously some reason why He chose to record some events and not others. Therefore I believe every sentence, every event that God chose to record is there for a specific reason and that there is something God wants us to learn from them other then the historical value of the event or for the obvious lesson to be learned. You may wonder how stories from 6000 years ago could be relevant to our lives today. I know I did, however once my eyes were opened, it was truly amazing. The next time you read the bible, ask God to show you how this is relevant to your life. You will simply be amazed by what you are shown when you have that 'ah ha!' moment.
The Bible Code
There may be another reason why God chose to record certain events and not others. Although it is still a matter of debate, I think we can also cite the "Bible Code" as proof that the Bible is in fact the true word of God. For those of you as yet unfamiliar with this, the Bible code basically takes the Old Testament and converts it into a computer program. Some believe this is what is meant in Daniel 12:4 when God said, "But you, Daniel, keep this prophecy a secret; seal up the book until the time of the end, when many will rush here and there, and knowledge will increase." Just think about how much human knowledge has exploded in the last 50-80 years! There's no doubt we are living in that age spoken of in Daniel. Many throughout the ages believed there was more to the bible then what we could read. It has long since been believed that the bible contained some sort of code that when revealed would tell us of things to come. Not until our generation, till the computer age dawned have we been able to discover such a code. Basically how this works is that the Old Testament is put into a computer with no spaces or punctuation and then a code is put in, for example every 5th letter. The computer then goes through the entire old testament taking every 5th letter which surprisingly creates relevant words that form groups like a crossword puzzle. Any words that are formed that touch or cross over each other are part of the same message. Surprisingly many events from our time have been found just before or just after the actual event occurred. People, places and dates from our time and in the near future have been found. If this Bible code is real and it seems like it is, how much more proof could there be that God and God alone is the author of the Bible, for it is impossible that any man could have achieved such a feat, let alone one without a computer. Every single word had to be carefully chosen so that while the story was accurate and made sense, it also contained precise events for the future of mankind which is why it was extremely important that these hand written manuscripts were copied precisely through out time. If in the middle of copying the Old Testament a mistake was made, the whole thing had to be thrown out and started over. God not only authored the bible but made sure that it was copied precisely from generation to generation throughout the ages. That thought alone is mind blowing!
SPIRITUAL BEINGS IN A PHYSICAL WORLD
It is important for us to realize we are spiritual beings in a physical world. Colossians 1:14-15 says, "In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins: Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature:"
Christ is the visible image of an invisible God. He existed before God made anything at all and is Supreme over all creation.
God is spirit from which we all came and to which we will someday return to. While we are on this earth though, it is necessary for us to have a physical body, just as it was for our Lord and Saviour Jesus. He also needed a physical body in order to live on the earth.
We are made up of Body, Soul and Spirit. The soul is responsible for our feelings and desires and is what makes us alive. It is your soul that yearns for those things you want while you are here on earth while it is your spirit that is responsible for what you think and know and is what separates us from animals. It is our Spirit that communes with God and allows us to have a relationship with Him. God tells us this in 1 Thessolonians 5:23 ,
"Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you completely; and may your whole spirit, soul, and body be preserved blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ."
All spiritual beings will live forever, they cannot be destroyed. This 'energy of Spirit' lives on after your physical body dies, where it will live after death however is a matter of choice. Those who choose to believe in God, to eternal life with Him, while those who chose not to believe, to an eternal life without Him or in other words, Hell. For God is love and joy and everything that is good so a life without Him would be worse then anything you or I could imagine.
"And these will go away into everlasting punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.”
Once again science backs up this claim that your spirit will live on forever. This 'energy of spirit' that we talked about is just that. It is energy, the energy that is you and that cannot die with your physical body because we know from science that energy cannot be created or destroyed. There is no destruction of energy in death. Your Spirit is a part of God's Spirit and it can never die! It will either return to God like we said or to an eternity without God.
We'll take a look at one more thing for now that proves the existence of God and that is our own conscience. The evidence for this is obvious. We are all born with a knowledge of God and a spirit of love for all people and races. Children never see colour or race as an issue. That is something that is taught. This knowledge of God that we are born with is most evident in what we call our conscience. Our conscience is the indwelling voice of God whose purpose is to instruct us and keep us on the path God chose for us even if we've never had any formal knowledge or teaching of God. This knowledge of God is in our hearts and souls, it's built into our DNA. It's practically impossible not to believe in God until we grow up and become cynical and jaded.
Our conscience or voice of God, always tells us if we are doing something that we know is not right or is immoral, even if we are not breaking any man made laws. If morality and rightness were things man created like our legal laws, then we would not be born with that knowledge. After all, we are not born with a knowledge of man made laws but only Gods law. Think about it. There is no reason we should be born with a sense of right and wrong. No reason we should feel bad if for example, we hurt someones feelings. That sense of morality comes from God. Consider that we are the only "animal" on this planet born with a conscience. No other species is born with a sense of right and wrong and no other species feels bad when they do something that is immoral. That is because we are not just another "animal" born on this earth. We are not just human beings having a spiritual experience, we are spiritual beings having a human experience. We are all born infused with the spirit and knowledge of God.This is proof that God is alive and well and still speaks to us and is involved in our lives without our even having to ask!
People all over the world believe in a Supreme Being, in some sort of God or higher power from the beginning of time until now. Some may argue that ancient peoples did so because the natural forces and the laws governing our planet and the heavens was a mystery to them so they had to create a god in order to explain everything they didn't understand. As well, because things like storms and volcanoes were frightening to them, they needed to create a god or gods in order to appease them. If a god was making the volcanoes erupt, it stands to reason that we could do things to make him happy so that he would not let bad things happen etc. However, with everything that we know now, with all our technology and scientific knowledge, more people now then ever before believe in some sort of God, more then at any other time in history and still more will come to a knowledge of God during the Great Revival that will take place in the end days.
The point is the more we learn scientifically, the more we learn about our Creator and the universe He created. I guess you can even say that God is science. Faith and science go hand in hand and we will look at this even closer in Hubs to come.
"Then God saw everything that He had made, and indeed it was very good."
