Seven Attributes of God
God is the Creator of the Universe
I would never be able to list all the attributes of God because He is so almighty and powerful. But here I will list seven, which is a number of the perfection of God.
At all times it is absolutely necessary to place God first and foremost in our day. In order to grow spiritually and naturally, we should have a daily meditation period where we praise God alone for who He is and for what He has done in our lives.
Having accepted Jesus Christ as my personal Lord and Saviour is enough to praise God. Just waking up on a daily basis is enough to praise God. Looking back over our lives we who are born again can say, “Look where God has brought me from.”
These meditations will focus on our ability to be stable in tough economic times. It will help us to stand strong in a day when so many are falling and failing at the things that have come to past. Just knowing that God is all powerful is enough to steady our being and know that He is all we need to live and to survive and to flourish.
I have heard God say so many times, “wait on me” before making that decision. Sometimes it feels like I am always “waiting” but there is a reason. God wants to work out situations so that our lives are played out for His good.
During those “waiting” periods, I felt the need to look into the Bible and find out just who God is and lean on that Word so that I am not “shaken” by difficulties.
Attribute 1 – Almighty God
Webster’s Dictionary tells us that “almighty” means the following:
Unlimited in might; omnipotent; all-powerful; irresistible, great; extreme; terrible.
This description, in some way, sum’s up who God is. He is unlimited in might, omnipotent, all-powerful, irresistible, great, extreme and terrible. In fact, words cannot utterly describe God. But here He is unlimited. HE is vast and cannot be contained. God is considered “The Lord of Armies” in Scripture.
One can see God’s almighty power by how He created the universe, the angels and man. Only an almighty God could have done these things.
Scripture is rich with the Almighty power of God.
"I will be to you a Father. You will be to me sons and daughters, says the Lord Almighty." (2 Corinthians 6:18)
"The four living creatures, each one of them having six wings, are full of eyes around and within. They have no rest day and night, saying, " Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God, the Almighty, who was and who is and who is to come!" (Revelation 4:8)
"The Almighty will be your treasure, and precious silver to you." (Job 22:25)
"He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty." (Psalms 91:1)
Attribute 2 – God is All-knowing, Omniscient
The following is a description of the word omniscient.
Having complete or unlimited knowledge, awareness, or understanding; perceiving all things.
God knows everything all at once! He knows everything from the beginning to the end. He knows the past, even before time, He knows the present even before it occurs and He knows the future which has not yet come.
He describes Himself as “I am that I am.”
It brings me comfort and joy to know that God knows every matter inside and out. It frees me to settle down and trust Him. It allows me to rest in His hands. It shows me even though some times have been hard, He has brought me to a place where I can minister to the lost from self experience. I can let others know that no matter what happens, we as believers are in good hands.
It also frees me to just love God for who He is. I know that I know He has my well being at hand. He said He would never leave me or forsake me. I can use the arsenal that He has placed in my hands such as prayer, the Word, confession of the Word, the blood of Jesus, asking in the name of Jesus, speaking in tongues and on and on.
The following Scriptures relate to the omniscient character of God. St. John1:1 describes Jesus as God.
“... So Jesus, knowing all the things that were coming upon Him,
went forth and said to them, "Whom do you seek?" (John 18:4)
“After this, Jesus knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the scripture might be fulfilled, saith, I thirst.” John 19:28
"Jesus knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he was come from God, and went to God..." (John 13:3)
Attribute 3 – God is Forever – He Never Changes
So many things in our lives change. The weather changes, seasons change, time changes, our personal lives change whether it be growing older, gaining more knowledge, gaining more understanding, being more productive or less productive. These are changes in life.
Isn't it wonderful to know that God never changes.
We can bank on it. He will never change. His Holy Word will last forever. Not one jot or tittle will pass away. This is the confidence that we have in God. He stays the same. He loves us the same. Man’s love often changes. Man may love us for one moment and the next hate us. But God always loves us with an everlasting love.
The dictionary states that to not change is:
Not to make different in some particular, not to make radically different, not transform, not to give a different position, course, or direction to, not to replace with another, not to make a shift from one to another and not to exchange for an equivalent.
God stands firm on His Word and He never changes.
Scripture tells us about the never changing attribute of God:
"For I am the LORD, I change not; therefore ye sons of Jacob are not consumed." (Malachi 3:6)
"My covenant will I not break, nor alter the thing that is gone out of my lips." (Psalm 89:24)
"And also the Strength of Israel will not lie nor repent for he is not a man that he should repent." (I Samuel 15:29)
"God is not a man, that He should lie, nor a son of man, that He should repent. Has He said, and will He not do it? Or has He spoken, and will He not make it good?" (Numbers 23:19)
Attribute 4 – God Delivers in Total-He Does Not Do Things Half-way
To “deliver” means:
Having all parts or elements; lacking nothing; whole; entire; full, finished; ended; concluded: a complete orbit, having all the required or customary characteristics, skills, or the like; consummate; perfect in kind or quality, thorough; entire; total; undivided, uncompromised, or unmodified; to make whole or entire, to make perfect
God is a God of completeness. From the time of the Creation of the Earth to this day, God is completing the assignment that He has to establish His kingdom and let all principalities, powers and rulers know that He is the Great, Almighty God.
This can be seen throughout all time. God has shown us time and time again that He is the true and living God and there is none other.
The following Scripture speaks of God's attribute of completeness or wholeness:
"That they may know from the rising of the sun, and from the west, that there is none beside me. I am the LORD, and there is none else." (Isaiah 45:6)
Attribute 5 – God is Wise – The Ancient of Days Sits On His Throne and Judges
The definition of being “wise” is
Having the power of discerning and judging properly as to what is true or right; possessing discernment, judgment, or discretion, characterized by or showing such power; judicious or prudent: a wise decision, possessed of or characterized by scholarly knowledge or learning; learned; erudite: wise in the law, having knowledge or information as to facts, circumstances, etc., to instruct, to induce or advise, to show the way to; guide, to direct the course of; cause to turn.
I delight in serving a God who is wise. I can go to God in prayer for wisdom in any situation that I am in. I can be confident that God will answer my prayer for His wisdom in a matter. That gives me comfort. God is from everlasting to everlasting. This means that He is all-knowing. To serve a God who knows everything thing is unlimiting. A human judge only knows what is said in court and in court records or through witnesses. Then his judgement can be impartial. Our God knows a matter from the beginning to the end. He knows the heart of man. He knows every nuance. I will continue to always put my trust in a wise God as He is.
If I lose something such as my keys, a camera, money, etc., I can go to God in prayer and pray for the recovery of that thing that has been lost. I have lost brief cases, keys, money, cameras, wallets, and I have prayed and asked the angels to encamp around those things until I can recover them. My prayers have been answered. I can pray and ask God for wisdom for exam questions. I can pray and ask God for wisdom in how to deal with people and God has answered.
Here are some Scriptures about God’s wisdom:
"Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding." (Proverbs 4:7)
"But we speak the wisdom of God in a mystery, even the hidden wisdom, which God ordained before the world unto our glory." (I Corintians 2:7)
"If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him." (James 1:5)
Attribute 6 – God is Love – His Lovingkindness is Everlasting
The definition of love:
Strong affection for another arising out of kinship or personal ties <maternal love for a child>, affection based on admiration, benevolence, or common interests, an assurance of love, warm attachment, enthusiasm, or devotion, the object of attachment, devotion, or admiration, a beloved person, often used as a term of endearment, unselfish loyal and benevolent concern for the good of another, the fatherly concern of God for humankind, brotherly concern for others, a person's adoration of God.
God’s love lasts forever. God loves us from everlasting to everlasting. He has a great and massive love for us. He sent His only begotton Son to save us from eternal death. St. John 3:16 says, "For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotton Son (Jesus), that whosoever believeth on Him should not perish but have everlasting life."
God's love never fails. People that we love on earth and adore may someday die or leave us. God says that He will never leave us or forsake us (Those who are born again.).
This kind of love is unconditional. Because I am born again in Christ Jesus, my righteousness is of Jesus and not of myself. Even though I may have sinned today knowingly or unknowingly in my thoughts, how I treat people or in my devotion to God, the blood of Jesus cleanses me of all unrighteousness when I ask for forgiveness and repent of the sin.
God's love makes me righteous before Him without having any sense of guilt or condemnation. I am free in Jesus Christ.
Scriptures for God is Love:
"There is no fear where love exists. Rather, perfect love banishes fear, for fear involves punishment, and the person who lives in fear has not been perfected in love." (I John 4:18)
"Love is always patient; love is always kind; love is never envious or arrogant with pride. Nor is she conceited" (I Corinthians 13:4)
"Dear friends, let us continually love one another, because love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born from God and knows God." (I John 4:7)
"And we have known and believed the love that God hath to us. God is love; and he that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God, and God in him." (I John 4:16)
Attribute 7 – God is Joyful
Definition of Joyful:
experiencing, causing, or showing joy, happy
Scriptures for God being joyful:
"And Sarah said, God hath made me to laugh, so that all that hear will laugh with me." (Genesis 21:6)
"Blessed are ye that hunger now: for ye shall be filled. Blessed are ye that weep now: for ye shall laugh." (Luke 6:2)
"A time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance;." (Ecclessiastes 3:4)
"He that sitteth in the heavens shall laugh: the LORD shall have them in derision." (Psalm 2:4)
God is a God with a sense of humor. It is said, “Look at the people that God has made and you will laugh.” We are a funny bunch of humans!
Laughter is good for the soul. God knows that we need to have fun and laugh. It is a part of our nature to desire to enjoy life.
I had a personal relationship with Jesus one day, and God became closer, more intimate and more real. I realized that God had a sense of humor. He made me.
God shows us life as children and young adults and then He shows us His life. It was many years later at the age of 35 that I came to know God in a personal way. It seems I had been running from Him, not wanting what seemed like a starched, strict, lawful lifestyle. I ran into a loving, kind, tenderhearted, humorous God, who is my “everything” today.
The songwriter said,
"Our God is an awesome God
He reigns from heaven above
with wisdom, power, and love
our God is an awesome God."
And that He is.
