TRUE GHOST STORIES - The Strangler in the Night

Updated on May 11, 2011

Haunted Youth Hostel ...

* As told by Katrina

I thought my dreams were finally coming true when I landed a job at the day spa on a resort in Queensland. “This is such a beautiful spot,” I said to my new colleague Tina. “Yes its’ like paradise isn’t it,” she replied. Tina and I would be sharing a room in the staff quarters so we made our way to the dorms to unpack and settle ourselves.

After a tour of the resort by the staff manager Terry, and enjoying a sumptuous meal in the bistro, Tina and I decided to turn in as the next day would be our first full day on the job and we needed our rest.

Later, I lay in my bed thinking to myself that I couldn’t be happier and that life couldn’t possibly get any better. I soon drifted off into a blissful sleep.

But an hour or so later I felt a hand around my throat, squeezing hard and slowly cutting off my air supply. I tried to scream but no sound came out. I focused my eyes to see a man leaning over me, dressed in dark clothing. I feared for my life right then and there.

Suddenly Tina let out an ear-piercing scream and sat up in bed, grabbing at her throat and grasping for breath. The man clutching my throat immediately vanished into thin air.

“Tina ...” I rasped. “Are you ok?”

“I had the most dreadful nightmare Kat,” she replied, looking absolutely terrified. “Someone was standing over me, and he had a knife ... I can still feel his hands on my throat.” she continued.

“Same with me,” I told her, rubbing my own throat to ease the residual pain. “I saw a man in dark clothing standing over me while he squeezed my throat almost closed. I thought I was going to die. It just felt so real ...”

“Oh my God,” Tina gasped. “I had a man standing over me too, but he was holding a knife to my throat. I thought I was going to die too ...”

We were both so shaken that neither of us could get back to sleep that night, and the following morning Tina and I asked the other staff members if anything bad had ever happened in our particular room.

Jack, an older man in charge of maintenance at the resort, told us that a few years back a young guy had worked there for a time and he’d stayed in our room. He’d gone missing a few months after arriving, and was found dead four days later on one of the back beaches with a large gash on his head. He went on to tell us that the police could never discern whether he’d been pushed or had fallen. They knew he was going through a hard time after a break-up with his girlfriend and had become depressed and morose. He’d become very disillusioned about women in general, and blamed them all for his pain.

Tina and I stared at each other in alarm, then spontaneously spun on our heels and took off straight to the human resource manager’s office to request a room transfer. Once there, he didn’t even blink when we said we wanted a new room. “So I take it you don’t like that room very much,” he said with resignation. “Not many women do actually”.

Tina and I were relieved to be out of that room and thankfully never experienced anything like it ever again.
