TRUE GHOST STORIES - We Shared A Dream

Updated on May 31, 2011

The ghost who visited us in our dreams ...

*As told by Jasmine

One night, not long after falling asleep next to my partner Josh, I dreamt that an older woman came into the room and put her face right up close to mine. She had long, wavy brown hair, and her face looked strained and gaunt. Her brown eyes bulged as though she was struggling for breath. She leaned forward and reached out her arms as if she was going to grab me, and in my shock I snapped awake. My heart was beating fast and I was panting with fear as I quickly switched on the bedside lamp. Josh woke instantly and sat up to see if I was ok.

“I dreamed that an old woman was staring at me, then tried to grab me,” I cried. “I’m so glad it turned out to be just a nightmare,” I continued.

Josh stared at me with a shocked look on his face. “I had the same nightmare ...” he blurted out skakily. “A woman with long brown hair came at me and tried to grab my body – like she was trying to suck my body into hers or something,” he said.

“Me too!” I said with my heart in my throat.

“I pushed her away and yelled at her to stay away from me, and that’s when you woke me up by turning on the light,” Josh said, looking at me wide-eyed.

“It must be some sort of sign. A shared nightmare must mean something, surely,” I said.

Josh and I discussed details, and came to the conclusion that the woman in our nightmares resembled Josh’s grandmother, Adele, who’d passed over when he was in his teens. I’d seen her in a family portrait at Josh’s parent’s home, and agreed that she most certainly resembled the woman from our shared nightmare.

We settled back down to sleep and spent the rest of the night without incident or disturbance.

The following morning our shared nightmare wasn’t a priority so was forgotten as we rushed to get ready for work. It was forgotten about until later that night – or should I say, early the following morning.

I’d found it difficult getting to sleep that night and lay awake as Josh tossed and turned beside me. I wasn’t consciously thinking about the woman in our shared nightmare (presumably Josh’s grandmother Adele), but I was aware of a strange feeling or atmosphere in the room and I just couldn’t relax enough to fall asleep no matter what I tried to do or tell myself. Counting sheep was useless and futile.

In time I must have drifted off to sleep, as at some point I began dreaming of Adele again, although this time she was floating above me; hovering just above my body. I was totally paralysed and felt stiff as a board as she stared at me intently; her mouth moving but no sound coming out.

I suddenly became aware that my body was moving and shaking and I awoke fully to find Josh shaking me, mumbling frantically about a floating ghost, and a large key and a door. Josh said that he’d seen his grandmother Adele floating just above him, then she’d shown him a huge, over-sized, old-fashioned looking, gold key, and what had looked to be a front door to a house.

I didn’t know what the key and door were about, but I recognised that again we’d both dreamed about the spirit of Josh’s grandmother Adele, although this time she hadn’t seemed so menacing.

Josh wasn’t so much frightened of his dream, but rather, intrigued by what it all meant.

Two days later I noticed a missed call on my phone, and wondered who it could have been as it was an unfamiliar number. A text message received round about the same time requested that I ring the number back at my earliest convenience. I showed Josh and asked if he knew the number, but it was unfamiliar to him as well. I thought no more of it and got on with enjoying the evening with my family, slipping off to sleep easily later that night.

At some point I became aware of what we assumed to be the spirit of Adele, Josh’s grandmother, again hovering just above me. I was somehow aware that I was dreaming again, but didn’t feel so frighten this time.

She held out a large, comical-looking, old-fashioned gold key, and showed me a wooden door ... the kind of front door you’d see on a nice new home. She then showed me a big red bow and a large (again comical-looking and over-sized) cheque.

“Woohoo!” I suddenly heard from afar, jolting me awake.

Josh began excitedly recalling his dream, and described how again Adele had visited him and presented the outlandish key, and shown him the wooden door. He made mention also of seeing a huge cheque (like the kind you see given to people who win on game shows) and a large red bow; and I just had to interject and tell him quickly about my own corresponding and pretty much identical dream. We compared details and were aghast at how alike our dreams were and pondered on what it could all possibly mean.

The following morning I rushed to get ready for work, and accidentally left my phone sitting on the kitchen bench in my haste to leave on time. I didn’t realize it until morning tea time, but figured that if anyone needed to call me they’d know to just call my work number, so I didn’t stress about in and thought no more of it.

Lying in bed drifting off to sleep later that night, I wondered if Josh and I would have a dream visit from grandma Adele, and almost looked forward to the prospect – if nothing more than to try to solve the mystery of all the over-sized objects and the front door vision that Adele had shown us both in our shared dreams.

Just before dawn the following morning, I was half awake and half asleep, and felt the presence of someone (or something) in the room. I tried to focus, but was still too deep in sleep to function clearly. I was reminded of Adele and in my semi-dream state, she showed me my phone. Then she was gone and I woke up with a jolt, wondering where my phone was.

Josh roused beside me and rolled over to ask me if I’d returned the call to that strange number from the other day. I looked at him quizzically wondering why he would choose such an odd time to bring that up ... so he went on to explain that again he’d dreamt of Adele, although this time she’d shown him my phone and inferred that a certain call needed to be made.

There was no time to fully compare the details of our dreams as it was a busy weekday morning, but I assured Josh that I’d call the mysterious number as soon as I got to work, fully intending to do so.

By lunchtime the promised phone call was long forgotten as I was snowed-under with menial office tasks.

Mid-afternoon my phone beeped, letting me know a text message had come in. It was from Josh asking me who the mystery caller had been. He said that it had been niggling at him all day. I couldn’t very well reply that I hadn’t bothered (or even remembered) to call, so resolved to call the number right then and there.

When the voice on the other end finally answered my call, I felt a vague sense of recognition at the name of the company the receptionist had answered the call with. PTC Building and Construction PL. It seemed familiar for some reason, but I couldn’t quite place it.

I waited and waited until finally a man who introduced himself as Adam Fyfe came on the line. He quickly informed me that his company had been running a competition these past six months with the first prize being a brand new house and land package and a cash cheque for $20,000 ... and asked me if I was familiar with it. It clicked instantly and remembered entering the competition he’d described. I held my breath as Mr Fyfe went on to inform me that I was indeed the winner of that first prize. I couldn’t believe my ears and asked him to repeat it all from the beginning ... just to make sure I’d heard right.

I rang Josh hooting and cheering and could hardly form the words to tell him my brilliant news. Finally I managed to tell him that we’d need to take the next day off work in order to sign some paperwork at the head office of PTC Building and Construction PL in town.

That night Josh and I could hardly sleep for excitement and it wasn’t until very early the following morning that we both drifted off from sheer exhaustion.

Not long after falling asleep Adele arrived in my dream holding the over-sized key, the huge cheque and the large red bow. She held them out to me as if giving them to me, and I reached out to grasp them ... only to be woken suddenly by Josh clapping and crying with joy. I rolled over to find out what on earth he was doing, only to find him grinning from ear to ear. He started chanting out loud ‘we’ve won, we’ve won’ ... then calmed down a little to tell me about his dream of Adele presenting him with a key and a cheque and a big red bow and showing him a front door ... again mirroring my own dream.

Our shared dreams had to be related to our win ... there was no other explanation.

We dressed with care that morning but could barely contain our excitement as we prepared to collect our prize.

Adam Fyfe congratulated us on our win and presented us with a huge, comical-looking, old-fashioned gold key, an over-sized ‘winning’ cheque wrapped in a huge red bow, and a large photo of our brand new home to be built on the land parcel of our choice. The picture of the display home prominently featured a large, wooden front door - identical to the one shown to us in our shared dream. Josh and I glanced at each other as we both recognized it at the same time.

Adele hasn’t visited us in our dreams since, and I’m not too sure how she was tied in with our wonderful win, or why she chose to tell us in the freaky way that she did - but I’m not complaining. In fact, Josh and I couldn’t be happier.
