The Beautiful Heart of King David

The Beauty of King David’s Heart

“Saul and Jonathan – in life they were loved and gracious, and in death they were not parted. They were swifter than eagles, they were stronger than lions.”

“O daughters of Israel, weep for Saul, who clothed you in scarlet and finery , who adorned your garments with ornaments of gold.”

2 Samuel 1 : 23 - 24

The passage above were the gracious words of king David regarding king Saul as he mourn for the death of the latter. It indeed touched my heart as I ponder on the kind of treatment king David received from king Saul. King David never received kind treatment from king Saul. Saul relentlessly pursued to kill king David. Saul had devised so many schemes to put king David’s life to death. But the Lord God is always with King David that he escaped all those deadly plots from king Saul. David deeply mourned for the death of king Saul and gave high honor to king Saul in his death. Oh how king David reveres king Saul that he never took revenge against him.

Throughout all Saul’s evil schemes against David, king David never retaliate , but he continued on revering and loving king Saul. Inspite of all the harsh treatment from king Saul, David gave Saul a tribute at his death. King David’s heart had never grown bitter against king Saul until his death, he remained the beloved king of David.

How beautiful is the heart of King David that resembles the heart of our dear Lord and Savior JesusChrist. At the cross the Lord JesusChrist kept on praying for all those who plotted murder against him. No wonder King David is called a man after God’s own heart.

I am greatly rebuked by this beautiful attitude of king David towards king Saul . At times I got easily provoked by my detractors and longs for their downfall. How far is my heart from king David. I believe I still need to grow in this area of my spiritual walk. It takes a great work of the Holy Spirit in a christian’s life to learn to love your enemies, people who persecute you and makes life difficult and miserable for you. King Saul made life very miserable and difficult for king David , but he remained on loving king Saul.

If only we will learn to love our enemies, people who make life hard for us, we have grown closer in our pursuit of Christlikeness. Loving our enemies, this is one of the hardest teaching to accept in Christianity yet it is one of the greatest measure of Christlikeness. Forgiving without limit those people who offends us continually proves that God’s Spirit is very much alive in our lives. This is the true measure of our spirituality. King David has also many weaknesses and failures as a believer. He has committed great sins such as adultery and murder but king David’s heart remained radiant because he loved king Saul, his mortal enemy.

Ate Cristina: Saul was already King, and still living when David is declared King. Jealousy fills Saul as he realizes that he has been replaced, yet David still loves Saul.

Cristina327...a wonderful reminder that if we let the love of Jesus fill our hearts then we can and will love our enemies. King David is a beautiful example to follow...and Jesus even more as He hung from the crosss pleading for the forgiveness of the very ones who put Him there. Thanks for sharing...blessings to you

Thank you Cristina for this lovely devotion about David. I especially enjoyed you showed David's attitude toward Saul being a shadow of what Jesus would do in not avenging His attackers but respecting them to the very end.

This made me think that they must have had tremendous focus David's being that he knew he would be king but not by His own efforts and Jesus the same. He had no need to defend the fact that He is the King of Kings. He knew who He was and entrusted Himself to God and not man.

An insightful thought provoking hub.

So very true Cristina, many I'm sure go thro life much the same way as Saul did trying to put others down, when they were just loving us, this is the same as when many run God down they try to do all kinds of things and say things about Him but God still loves them no matter what they try to do or say.

God loves all

Hi Dave I am glad to hear from you again. Thank you for paying a visit. Your visit and comments are much appreciated. King David is the next anointed king but Saul did not want to give up the throne. He want to give his throne to his son Jonathan. King David waited for quite some time before he actually became king of Israel. King Saul made life so miserable and difficult for David during those waiting period. But David never hold a grudge against King Saul. King David remained on loving and revering king Saul until the time of King Saul's death.Loving your enemy ,this is the greatest display of christlikeness. Remain blessed always. Best regards.

Hi UlrikeGrace I am glad to hear from you again. Thank you for dropping by and appreciating this hub. Your visit is a great encouragement to me and it is much appreciated. Loving our enemies and fogiving without limit those people who continually offend us is the true measure of spirituality and christlikeness more than physical and outward manifestations of displaying religiosity and piety. One may have many ministries but if he cannot forgive people who persecute him, his ministry is in vain. To be effective minister of the Word of God, we must practice what Christ teaches on dealing with our enemies. I wish you a blessed day today. Best regards.

Great job! I almost stripped down to my shorts and danced across town. Of course, you are shedding light on the deep abiding love that David maintained for Jonathan and Saul. He loved them both with an unwavering heart, although one returned his love with jealousy and rage. Your sweet spirit is a powerful motivator.
