The Lost Island of Atlantis

Flood Myths.

In the world of myth the flood myth is one of the most pervasive recorded. Even in the oldest work know to mankind at present "Gilgamesh" written on tablets some 25,000 years ago, there is a flood myth akin to all others in other works, including the Bible. While there may have been more than one world flood, it has been recorded in almost every country on the planet.

One can access many of these myths compiled on many different web sites on the Internet, one such being: http://www.talkorigins.org/faqs/flood-myths.html. The stories seem to be far flung and incredible, far from the sensible scientific proofs we demand today, but they are recorded by a people with limited vocabulary and understanding of how the world works.

The study of myths or mythology was reinforced and made more accessible by the 20th century Mythologist Joseph Campbell. Campbell was the quintessential authority on all manner of myth and religious tale. His works remain excellent reference points to all manner of mythic study.

Another fantastic literary critic: Northrup Frye wrote extensively on mythic criticism, offering archetypes and themes to his reader in exquisite detail and accessible prose.

A myth is NOT a lie, it is a representation of the truth, explained by those less than able to explain it in scientific terms!

Atlantis

Fascination with the Lost "continent" or island of Atlantis has been around since (at least) Plato's time. His entire essay entitled "Timeaus" from where this excerpt is taken:

"Many great and wonderful deeds are recorded of your state in our histories. But one of them exceeds all the rest in greatness and valour. For these histories tell of a mighty power which unprovoked made an expedition against the whole of Europe and Asia, and to which your city put an end. This power came forth out of the Atlantic Ocean, for in those days the Atlantic was navigable; and there was an island situated in front of the straits which are by you called the Pillars of Heracles; the island was larger than Libya and Asia put together, and was the way to other islands, and from these you might pass to the whole of the opposite continent which surrounded the true ocean; for this sea which is within the Straits of Heracles is only a harbour, having a narrow entrance, but that other is a real sea, and the surrounding land may be most truly called a boundless continent. Now in this island of Atlantis there was a great and wonderful empire which had rule over the whole island and several others, and over parts of the continent, and, furthermore, the men of Atlantis had subjected the parts of Libya within the columns of Heracles as far as Egypt, and of Europe as far as Tyrrhenia. This vast power, gathered into one, endeavoured to subdue at a blow our country and yours and the whole of the region within the straits; and then, Solon, your country shone forth, in the excellence of her virtue and strength, among all mankind. She was pre-eminent in courage and military skill, and was the leader of the Hellenes. And when the rest fell off from her, being compelled to stand alone, after having undergone the very extremity of danger, she defeated and triumphed over the invaders, and preserved from slavery those who were not yet subjugated, and generously liberated all the rest of us who dwell within the pillars. But afterwards there occurred violent earthquakes and floods and in a single day and night of misfortune all your warlike men in a body sank into the earth, and the island of Atlantis in like manner disappeared in the depths of the sea. For which reason the sea in those parts is impassable and impenetrable, because there is a shoal of mud in the way; and this was caused by the subsidence of the island."

Was Atlantis real?

Atlantis was purported to be a very advanced society that used crystals for transmission of knowledge, and had advanced so much the people could not control the power and destroyed itself. This may be a far-fetched explanation of a society of which we have no real "proof", but there are more unusual things in this world that we cannot explain with any real certainty. If this society was advanced, is it possible the inhabitants let themselves become to full of hubris and collapsed upon itself?

Metaphysical peoples believe they are descendants of this mystical group of people and another group called Lemurian's, who also were destroyed in an earlier time period. Is it possible that aliens from other worlds taught them technology that they used that ultimately destroyed the society? Without bringing up things easily dismissive by skeptics, one might come to the conclusion power corrupted this society, or that mother nature (God) unleashed its destructive power and eradicated this magical place.

Edgar Cayce the Sleeping Prophet

Edgar Cayce's descriptions of Atlantis and its demise are of definitive interest to anyone who chooses to read of this subject. Known as the "Sleeping Prophet" Cayce was known to talk in his altered state of cures for diseases of which he had no knowledge. He was led to discuss many other things of interest during his lifetime, Atlantis among them. According to Cayce's trace channeled information: During the last Ice Age (12,000-years ago) the ocean levels were at about 300 feet below their current levels. A vast "island" was in the Atlantic area in those remote times rather than the current chain of islands. The island of Bimini is described as one of the mountaintops of ancient Atlantis as 12,000-years ago it was one of the highest points on the vast land formation in the region. Cayce related that a Hall of Records containing the records of Atlantis was constructed somewhere in the region. The Hall of Records was in a temple that sunk around 10,000 B.C. and is, according to Cayce, probably covered by "the slime of ages." This record hall is identical to the one in Egypt under the Sphinx, he said.

Donovan

Whether it is real or not or able to ever be proven, Atlantis remains a fascinating myth that has been memorialized in song and legend to this day. Singer Donovan Leitch penned the words to his version of this song back in the 1960's, bringing it to the forefront in the world of music. Since we are always discovering or under-covering things that were great mysteries, Atlantis is awaiting its "rediscovery" in our own time....in the meantime we can sing along and dream of its magical fascination in our world!

Lyrics to Atlantis

By: Donovan ( circa 1967)

The continent of Atlantis was an island

which lay before the great flood

in the area we now call the Atlantic Ocean.
So great an area of land, that from her western shores
those beautiful sailors journeyed
to the South and the North Americas with ease,
in their ships with painted sails.

To the East Africa was a neighbour, across a short strait of sea miles.
The great Egyptian age is but a remnant of The Atlantian culture.
The antediluvian kings colonised the world
All the Gods who play in the mythological dramas
In all legends from all lands were from fair Atlantis.
Knowing her fate, Atlantis sent out ships to all corners of the Earth.
On board were the Twelve:
The poet, the physician, the farmer, the scientist,
The magician and the other so-called Gods of our legends.
Though Gods they were -
And as the elders of our time choose to remain blind
Let us rejoice and let us sing and dance and ring in the new
Hail Atlantis!
Way down below the ocean where I wanna be she may be,
Way down below the ocean where I wanna be she may be,
Way down below the ocean where I wanna be she may be.
Way down below the ocean where I wanna be she may be,
Way down below the ocean where I wanna be she may be.
My antediluvian baby, oh yeah yeah, yeah yeah yeah,
I wanna see you some day
My antediluvian baby, oh yeah yeah, yeah yeah yeah,
My antediluvian baby,
My antediluvian baby, I love you, girl,
Girl, I wanna see you some day.
My antediluvian baby, oh yeah
I wanna see you some day, oh
My antediluvian baby.
My antediluvian baby, I wanna see you
My antediluvian baby, gotta tell me where she gone
I wanna see you some day
Wake up, wake up, wake up, wake up, oh yeah
Oh glub glub, down down, yeah

Aley, fascinating. Thanks for the hub! Voted up!

I've been interested in the Atlantis story for exactly fifty years. And, in 1968, I wrote a paper in Spanish class on the Basques and Atlantis.

Some beautiful points about myths. I have also come to the same conclusion about the ancient myths. In an era without television, radio, movies and other distractions, people possessed heightened skills of observation and memory. But without an adequate vocabulary, some of the stories come to us garbled and misunderstood.

Take the story of Isis, Horus, Seth and Osiris, from Egyptian mythology. At one point, Horus and Seth turn themselves into hippos, and Isis, thinking she'll help her son, Horus, throws harpoons. But she hits her son! Correcting her mistake, she finds Seth, and subdues him. Seth cries out for mercy, and Isis gives it. Horus, in indignant rage, cuts off his mothers head and hides it from her in the mountains. Later, Ra, the sun god, restores her head to her.

Sounds pretty outrageous, unless one includes the possibility that each of these individuals was rather a group. Cutting off the head, could merely have been the kidnapping of a leader (head). When the head of the group was restored, all was okay. Hippos? Could they have been Atlantean submarines? I write about this in my novel, "Edge of Remembrance."

There is also one substantially Greek myth that parallels the Egyptian import on Atlantis. This is the story of Athena's birth. It seems that Metis was a symbol for the latter days of Atlantis, and Athena was a symbol for the refugees. I talk about this in my own Atlantis quest hub.

Plato said that Atlantis was in the Northeast Atlantic, with colonies in the West. I think Cayce says the same thing. So Bimini was merely a colony. The Azores underwater plateau may be the largest recognizable remnant of Atlantis.

What's interesting in my own research is that we now have proof of an Atlantis-like event right when Plato said it happened. The proof is from not one scientific discipline, but three different fields.

The story keeps getting more and more interesting all the time.

Thanks so much Lone77star for coming by and complimenting my hub with much more information! You are awesome! This story sure is an interesting one and yes, the use of metaphor in myth is most assuredly one that was used, much like many of the biblical metaphors that many take literally! Thanks again! Sounds like you are really a mythic gem yourself! Deep bows.

Hi Aley,

I really love reading about Atlantis. The topic usually comes up in Metaphysics classes, where people agree the inhabitants got swelled heads and caused destruction with the advanced technology they possessed. It does seem that we may be headed in that direction once again. I hope not. From what I understand, 2012 is a time where people may finally begin to realize we are all from one Earth, and must work together. I also believe that the tarot was one way people passed on their knowledge, just as with myths, stories, legends and arts. A very nice read!
