That Old Serpent the Devil
Not This Lucifer
So you know....
I actually believe the things that I am writing about. I am not an intellectual who promotes apologetic reasoning for his faith. I do not believe in confusing fiction with faith though many people out there consider religion a collection of the best fiction-promoting institutions because it, religion, enslaves its acolytes such that it usurps any social progress that could occur otherwise. That may be true.
I unequivocally profess that God lives in the face of all science, which I also accept. Science supports my faith. God is the great scientist and philosopher. I speak to Him often. He speaks to me more than I do to Him! If that labels me insane, then I must be certified.
In my commission that makes me no better than any other who professes faith. It does not make me infallible or perfect. It just makes me committed to promoting Jesus christ as the savior of the world. Keep following my writings and you will get the whole picture.
Of course, I do not think that Lucifer actually looks like a human Symbiote (Spiderman reference, Ha!) with bat wings. However, understanding this reference to the Symbiote helps divulge Lucifer's personality, something we must understand in order to avoid him. The Symbiotes envelop a host--completely surrounding the flesh of the body from head to toe. The host-person and the creature create a bond where the creature strengthens the host and influences his or her mind until it completely takes over. The strength is a ruse. It is no substitute for stealing the host’s consciousness and body.
Though Lucifer is no thing, he has the same intentions as that Symbiote. He seizes the person he wants to claim and whispers suggestions in his or her ear with the intention of destroying his or her chances to become like God. I say seize, which seems so violent, but I should say approaches with invitation. I wanted to use the word seize because the result of an encounter with him always ends negatively for both!
In his encounter with Adam and Eve, Lucifer was very effective in gaining the audience of Mother Eve. He had lost the war in heaven, well, the first battle; and he sought… he went seeking ways to take advantage of his new situation. If I can say one thing about this being, Satan, he is nothing if not persistent.
Satan, as we refer to him sometimes, found himself cast down on the earth with his followers with no way to progress further as spirits having rebelled against the Father of Heaven and trying to justify the rebellion in a war.
With no chance of winning, and no future worth discussing, Satan modified the war by using the veil of forgetting to win acolytes of Adam and Eve and entice them away from eternal happiness. Each person born has a veil place upon his or her minds. I know it sounds strange, but God blessed all humanity with forgetting their lives in heaven with Him so that we can make choices based on our personality and experiences rather than a memory of being in glory.
The All-Knowing Lucifer?
Satan remembers the discussions Heavenly Father presided over as Jesus Christ (Jehovah) revealed the details of the Plan of Salvation vividly before Lucifer rebelled. Satan knows about The Plan of Salvation.
He knows how God provided Adam and Eve as a means for all of His children in heaven to receive a physical body through natural birth.
He knew there would be a veil on the minds of humanity to forget heaven. He knows and knew that Adam and Eve would fall, bringing in death to humanity, though at the time Jehovah explained The Plan, Satan did not estimate to be an actor in that drama.
He knew they would learn about Jesus Christ's atonement, which would nullify the effects of death and provide an opportunity for humanity to have physical bodies again following mortal death through Jesus's resurrection.
Satan knew that the atonement would give humanity choice without consequences of disobedience if they repented. He knew disobedience with suffering if unrepentant was the reward of the wicked; however, even those people would only give him temporary satisfaction.
He determined to stop the plan in its tracks! He would persuade the first man and woman to betray God! THERE! There he would find his weapon of retaliation against his Father in Heaven.
He knew they could choose to follow The Plan or not follow it. He knows everything! He did not forget the teaching of The Plan to us in heaven, but humanity did forget. He remembers the histories of the nations of the world as they really occurred and not the piecemeal recorded in the books of history. He also remembers our personal histories as they are. Many of us have hidden things even from ourselves that this, Satan, can recall and use against us along with his minions who for some reason continue to service his pugnacity.
I do not believe he reads the minds of righteous humans, but he can use our history, both in heaven and on earth, and personalities against us--something he learned with skill scouting Adam and Eve.
Talking to the Animals
Apparently, Adam and Eve could communicate with the animals. It is not clear, to me at least, if the communication was in speech similar to language, but during the Edenic experience Adam and Eve possessed knowledge to speak to the animals. And, at least one animal could speak in turn, the serpent.
The serpent was a very subtle animal and easy to entreat. Satan discovered as a spirit he could convince embodied creatures to allow him access to their functions and he did so with the serpent. He went to Adam and tried to convince him to partake of the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil. Being unsuccessful, he went after Eve as she tended the garden. Eve came across the serpent that Satan possessed and spoke to it.
I find it curious that Adam and Eve spoke to the animals; but, I will forbear writing of it here. I find it curious that Satan went to speak to Adam first according to Latter-day Saint doctrine anyway. Adam is Michael; the great archangel and general of Jehovah who presided over Lucifer's removal from heaven. He also knew that Adam could not remember him, sneaky. So, he tried it!
The serpent is not the creature that people should be leery of, but the voice behind the serpent. The serpent is an innocent creature used by a malevolent force in the garden and not evil itself, though the damnable creature yielded to Lucifer's will.
As an aside, Moses used a serpent on a rod for his people to look upon to be healed from the serpents who had attacked them in the wilderness. I personally believe Moses attempted under the direction of Jehovah to show Israel that the serpent is not the enemy of God. The serpent gets a bad reputation because one of their kind yielded aid to a demon. It is Satan who is the enemy.
Satan used a direct approach to speak to Adam and failed. He learned from that experience however. He knew that if he instructed Eve to partake of The Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil she would NOT comply, so he used stratagem.
Lucifer went to Eve and suggested that he was a brother of hers. She did not see this as odd having the trusting mind of a child and the association of Heavenly visitors such as God and others--providing the speculation that maybe the serpent appeared similar in form to human, or an extinct species of serpent.
Using this title of brother, he built a relationship of trust so that he could introduce the idea of partaking of the fruit of that tree when her guard was relaxed. It is undetermined how long Lucifer familiarized himself with Mother Eve before he implanted the seeds of discord in her mind. It could have been hours, days, years or even millennia.
Adam and Eve were not alone in the Garden. God made Himself available in person and sent others of their heavenly brothers and sister who were yet to be born. It should come as no surprise that Eve gave ear to the serpent who spoke the voice of Satan.
She was open to all who spoke with her and was deceived by the serpent. The concept of dishonesty had not yet presented with understanding to Eve until Lucifer deceived her as if he were her friend. It is not clear what the other spirits did that followed Satan. Satan would get his revenge by stealing the minds and hearts of Adam and Eve.
The Great Immitator
Satan has fallen to the point that his very existence became that of a catfish who feeds at the bottom of the lake to sustain itself. Satan feeds off the worst of humanity--the worst behaviors and appetites. He does not relish in the bad behaviors of wicked people as much as he revels in the righteous who fall prey to their baser desires.
Every opportunity that Satan has to convince a righteous person to submit to a base desire and not repent, it is a spiritual slap in the face to God because it accomplishes two things:
- A soul is distanced from God
- The Atonement of Christ is rejected
A soul is precious to God because he created all people in His image, even Satan! Satan is an imitator. To emphasis a little of his history, Lucifer rebelled against God the Father and Jesus Christ following the creation of the Earth. Michael, who became Adam, fought against Lucifer and his supporters, asserted as the dragon and his angels described in the Book of Revelations. Lucifer did not approve of any of us failing to return to our celestial home with God. He proposed a plan to save us all. It was misguided to say the least. (read more HERE under the heading Lucifer Opposed the Plan) Oblivious to Lucifer however, he fit himself perfectly into the plan by becoming the poster child for opposition.
Evil is as eternal as God is eternal and exists with or without a devil to tempt people. With choice comes the ability to choose to be evil. Lucifer, one of the children of Heavenly Father, which makes him also our brother, chose to follow pride and selfishness—making him kingpin of such behavior and an enemy to all that is good. God and all of humanity represent all that is good. Lucifer became the enemy to his Father and all humanity.
Whether we remain virtuous as all of humanity now and forever born lived once in heaven, or follow our fallen brothers and sisters steered by Satan is truly and only our individual choices.
