The Pharisee in me

It is,

The Pharisee in me,

The self-righteousness abounding,

That is hardest for me to see,

It is me,

Walking blindly down the street,

Dragging sinners behind me,

How blind can I be?

Woe to me,

It is,

The older son in me,

Beauty exchanged for the duty,

Of earning Grace for me,

It is me,

Condemning other's lives,

Disowning brothers in Christ,

How blind can I be?

Woe to me,

It is,

The flesh in me,

Reliance on self; contempt on thee,

Judging others my blasphemy,

It is me,

Binding others in iniquity,

Seeing works as what sets me free,

How blind can I be?

Woe to me,

I am the sinner,

It is me,

I stand afar,

Beat my breast,

I'm left with one plee,

God! Be merciful to me!

It is

The Grace of God,

The overwhelming mercy,

By the Truth I am set free,

It is me,

I am the Pharisee,

The older son,

Lord God, be merciful to me!

This is a very reflective poem. I, too have been thinking on this very issue. As Christians, many of us fail to identify that our behavior -in word and action often take on the very spirit of the pharisees and sadduccees. Without realizing it, we become critical, judgmental and accusers of others. Thank you for sharing this - great for thought and self-inventory!

Romans 7:15, "For I do not understand my own actions. For I do not do what I want, and I do the very thing I hate."

But this poem was written from the messy and dark part of me that kind of did realize the hypocrisy, which left me with nothing but a cry out for mercy. I feel like a lot of Christians ends up where I was when I wrote this; claiming ignorance for a seemingly blissful image. It's a daily battle indeed.
