The Haunted Pirates House Restaurant , Savannah Georgia

The Pirates House was built in 1753 in downtown Savannah Georgia and it has been in operation ever since. Over the years it has been a popular hangout for Pirates , Sailors , Thieves and more. There was once a tunnel that ran from the basement of the Pirates House to the river bank of the Savannah river.

Men who got drunk in the Pirates House were hit over the head and then they were taken down and through the tunnel to waiting ships that needed crews. The unsuspecting drunks would wake up as part of a pirate crew on the way to destinations unknown. The Pirates Den was one of the favorite hide outs of Edward Teach who you may know as Blackbeard. It is said that Blackbeard paid $5 in gold per man when he needed extra crewmen for his ships. Once at sea the men were given the option of being a pirate or having their throats cut and thrown overboard. Most chose to be a pirate and some men did not get to return home to Savannah Georgia for years.

Today you can enjoy an excellent dinner at the Pirates House and you don't have to worry that you will end up on a ship headed for China. Though if your lucky you just might have an interesting paranormal experience at the Pirates House. Its said that people see people dressed in early 1800's dress and think its actors wearing costumes. Only actors don't walk through walls or simply vanish when you look at them.

Captain Flint who was made famous in Treasure Island is said to appear in the room that is known as the Captains Room. Local legend says that Captain Flint died of too much rum in Savannah and he has been appearing on a regular basis ever since his death in 1837. He has quite often appeared in front of the big table and often orders people to get up from his table. Though sometimes he simply appears and walks around the room.

Most current employees of the Pirates House have had a paranormal experience and if you happen to catch them at a slow time you just might get them to share a ghost story or two with you. Some of the things employees have reported happening are doors being held open or doors opening on their own. Quite often employees there late at night have heard screams of help coming from the basement.

Some employees over the years have reported seeing a beautiful dark haired Spanish looking girl in the area of the front door. Its said that she appears to be looking for some one or something but if you look to close at her she simply vanishes. Some employees of the Pirates House have reported seeing her in the basement area also.

And some people have reported seeing a dark haired large man in the basement complete with a large sword at his side. Some employees of the Pirates House have quit their jobs rather than return to the basement area.

Over time lights in the restaurant go off and on and even though many electricians have checked the wires and even up dated them from time to time lights still go off and on especially late at night and really scare some people. One recent female employee of the Pirates House said that she felt a man touch her and grab her even though no man was in the area. She no longer works at the Pirates House.

I visit the pirate's house every year when I travel to savannah. I love it. Food is great, service is excellent. I have had a paranormal experience. Theres a room with a staircase where story has if that a little boy fell down the stairs and died by breaking his neck. Its said he hangs around and plays jokes on diners. I tried taking a picture of the staircase and my camera bugged out. The picture got all fuzzy and filled with static. Picture got all scrambled and then the battery died. (I had just fully charged it.) Before that though I took a picture down a hallway and caught a ghostly figure that looks a lot like a large pirate figure. Very interesting place to go. The staff will even give tours of the history of the old bar and tell some of their personal ghost stories they experienced. I recommend this place. 5 stars.

I visited The Pirates House back in October 2011. The buffet was really good and I would recommend it highly to anyone visiting Savannah. However I did not have any paranormal experiences, unless you count the crazy people I went to lunch with.

Thanks for an excellent hub, i really do like reading about hauntings and its good that a lot of people have seen these apparitions in service. I don't think i would like to visit the basement too often but if i ever get Stateside and hit Georgia it sounds like fun!!
