Who are the End Time Remnant?
Biblical End Times Remnant
The term 'remnant' is a significant concept during these 'End of Days' and specifically relevant to future prophecy regarding the millennium period, AFTER the time when believers are taken out of this world via martyrdom, or 'taken up' by Christ Yeshua [Raptured], and after the GreatTribulation Period has ended. There are many interpretations of the term 'Remnant' which has brought about this article.
Some commentators suggest 'Remnant' has a negative meaning as 'something that is 'left over' and valueless, therefore discarded'. Others believe a time will come when the remnant will be far from that! However, it is down to interpretation; many 'leftovers' can become extremely valuable, particularly if these are the only remnants in existence! When something becomes scarce -it gains value! Anything that becomes rare has an increase in value! And becomes 'well sort after' as a precious commodity!
The concept of a remnant of people can also become a valuable commodity in the right context!
My definition consists of a group of people who are sealed by God because of their faith and loyalty to Him and His son Yeshua! I believe these people receive a seal of ownership and protection by the Almighty because they refuse to bow down to the Antichrist, the deceiver and controller of this world - Satan! The apostate world will see this remnant [a group of believers], as a negative group of 'discarded individuals' who have no value, just as Hitler saw particular groups i.e. Jews and gypsies, as people of no value- worthy only of death! However, this remnant will have God-given power to challenge the apostate world and its leader -the Antichrist!
The commentators are correct when they say the term 'remnant' is used for leftovers and unwanted items, there are many biblical references to suggest that God discarded enemies of his people and in some cases discarded His own people because of their rebellion and sin. These rebellious people who were left after God's retribution and destruction were unwanted remnant. There were times when God wiped out entire nations such as Edom - never to exist again, see references below. However, on many occasions God saved a few people - a remnant. Why? It is this concept of a saved remnant that is the focus of this article - a remnant of great value with an 'end time' purpose! Often these remnant remained after witnessing God's power and wrath on the rebellious - this remnant therefore served as witnesses to these events but also many of the survivors chose to return to 'serving and obeying' God after witnessing his Greatness and his awesome power!
The term remnant is mentioned several times throughout the Bible (Old and New Testaments) from Exodus to Revelation, it has a variety of meanings some of which are negative and some have a positive meaning with a positive outcome. Biblical references suggest 'The Remnant' refers to groups of people, in some instances God saves a few people from total destruction for various reasons, usually to continue His work and to GLORIFY HIM! Biblical references given at end of article.
This article will focus on the positive term for remnant as written in the bible when God Himself speaks positively regarding His people - the remnant. If we look at the general definition of 'Remnant' it suggests it is always a small part of something, in context with biblical reference this shows a small group of people who remain behind or are chosen specifically for some reason.
The free on-line Wiki Encyclopedia defines 'Remnant' as a 'small part of something', still left or remaining after the rest has gone.
The on line 'Dictionary.Com', defines it as the following:
Leftover, remainder, last part, A SURVIVING TRACE, as of a former era.
Notice the terms ' a surviving trace',' last part' and 'something that remains after the rest have gone' as these three phrases are relevant to the article's topic regarding the biblical Remnant during these last days and end times prophecy.
While researching this topic I came across a website www.cgg.org which had some interesting information on the topic of biblical remnants. The website suggests the remnant is mentioned 540 times in the bible but has been lost in the English bibles due to mistranslation, for example in the Old Testament (Tanach) the word 'remnant' is translated by 6 Hebrew root words with an underlying meaning of 'what remains, or 'is left behind' or words such as 'survivors' or 'escapees' or 'the rest' is used. The website article also says there are 7 different types of remnants:
1. Survivor of any catastrophe such as Lot escaping Sodom and Gomorrah.
2. Group of non - Israelite survivors i.e. enemies of Israel.
3. Israelite survivors during Assyrian invasion 721-718 BC.
4. Israelite (Jewish) survivors of Babylonian invasion 585 BC.
5. Remnant of Jews returned to Judah from Babylon
6. Remnant of Israelites and Jews after the Great Tribulation
7. Remnant of converted sons of God in Last Days.
I will take the study into a deeper level whereby the above list is amalgamated into one whole meaning of Remnant which links all 7 of the above examples to the end time definition.
The end times 'Remnant' will be those such as Lot, who escape (through God's sealed protection and guidance and through their obedience) their enemies of this world i.e.modern Babylon, Sodom and Gomorrah!
During these end times and particularly during the Tribulation period, some Jews and Israelis will accept the Messiah and Savior Yeshua (these become known as the Tribe of Judah). The tribe of Judah represents those who have Yeshua as their leader (the Lion of Judah). Jews who follow God's Torah but not Yeshua are affiliated to the tribe of Jacob (Jacob wrestled with God and won - he was then named Israel). This is significant to the end times 144,000 Jews who later become followers of Christ after persecution. see book of Revelation.
The biblical term 'Israel' relates to the remnant that consists of Jewish Christians (better named Hebrews) and Gentile Christians. These Gentile believers are Torah observant and follow Yeshua's way and remain faithful to the end!
There will be three key groups of Remnant during these end times:
1. Remnant of God's people prior to the Great Tribulation. They remain faithful and obedient to God during the period leading up to the rapture and the Great Tribulation, these do not turn to adultery (other gods i.e. Idolatry - worshipping the things of this world). They chose to follow God's commandments and guidelines for a Holy and righteous living through their Messiah Yeshua and exercise the Holy Spirit gifts of wisdom and understanding etc. They do not enter into adultery with idols or worship money, but live by faith! Because they have already become refined like gold, having experienced the wilderness and years of persecution - they have acquired wisdom concerning 'Good and evil' and therefore have no need for further refinement and qualify for entry into God's kingdom, examples of such people who are the modern day equivalents of Moses, Abraham, Elijah and Enoch. This group will be taken out of the terrible times of trouble known as The Great Tribulation Period- taken out (raptured) of this world supernaturally. This Great Tribulation Period consists of the last 3 years and 6 months of the 7 year tribulation. Many believe that the rapture may occur either before, during or after this Tribulation Period. I believe the rapture occurs at different times for different people:
- First rapture will be the remnant (mentioned above). These will be taken BEFORE the GreatTribulation, during the first 3 and a half years.
- Second rapture takes place during the second part of the Tribulation (in the 4th year) their will be a rapture of the Two Witnesses and possibly the 144,000 Jews
- Finally the third rapture involves those who become believers during the 7 years tribulation. these will be taken up at the end of the seven year period to meet Christ and the other believers in the air ready for the final battle.
2. The second remnant group is the 144,000 Jews from the 12 tribes chosen to witness to the world of the coming Messiah, Yeshua. These commence their witness during the Great Tribulation period, known as 'the time of Jacob's trouble'. They attempt to bring people back to God before it is too late - before they reach destruction of their soul and eternal punishment! The soul is lost once a person accepts the Mark of the unholy one - Satan.
3. A third remnant group will be all those who become believers during the tribulation period - the time of trouble. These will consist of a small number of people who refuse to accept Satan as their God, they realise how wrong they have been during their lifetime. They had rejected God, His Son and anything to do with goodness. They chose to believe in evolution, science and humanism as truth. However, when all goodness leaves the earth and only evil is left to reign over the people, this remnant chooses to return to God, recognising His goodness and truth! However, some of those in this group knew all about God and righteousness, they had heard the Gospel of Christ, and may even have made a full commitment to follow God's way yet have backslidden into the world without realising it, they may have been raised by believing parents but chose to rebel against God, turning their backs on Him, preferring what the world had to offer. However, these individuals would come to realise the error of their ways and return to God during the Tribulation Period! Some have been chosen as a remnant to remain behind for God's purpose to witness and lead seekers to Him, such as the 144,000 Jews chosen and pre-elected for this task. This third group consists of both a pre-ordained group and a non-chosen group, these will become as 'one'. This third group will have backslidden believers, strayed believers, who entered the world of sin and corruption yet did not submit fully to Satan or accept the Mark of the Beast- this remnant will become the 'tribulation period believers'. This group will also include people who never made a commitment to God or Christ but heard the Gospel and decided against the Mark of the Beast instead making a commitment during the Tribulation to follow Christ! Some of these people will hear the Gospel through the witness of the 144,000 Jews and so be saved! Other members of this group may never have believed or heard the Gospel but refuse to accept the mark of the beast or to worship the beast or embrace evil! This final remnant therefore will consist of people from different backgrounds, different cultures and belief systems and yet they eventually learn the difference between good and evil! They recognise God and Christ as good and the antichrist and his legion as evil!
Each of these three remnant groups have a purpose and occur during different time periods. One group exists today (prior to the tribulation Period), it is the group of believers that stand out from the humanistic, apostate crowd, as being different, they worship God only with all of their mind, body, soul and strength! They refuse to comply with the world's corruption and evil, therefore they are labelled as 'extremists, weirdos, deviants, eccentrics or mentally unsound and they have no place in this world that choose to worship Satan!
The 144,000 Jews consisting of 12,000 from each of the 12 tribes of Jacob, are also a chosen Remnant with a specific function. They are selected from the Jewish nation because of their loyalty to Yahveh (God) and His Torah. These 'chosen ones' are righteous in God's eyes, they seek to be holy and stand by the Torah teachings. They recognise that Judaism has strayed from the True Torah. They have their eyes opened to the true Messiah Yeshua, who will reign over the Earth as King of all Nations! These righteous 144,000 Jews are those who recognise the false Judaism that exists today (see below for reference) and remain faithful to Moshe's (Moses) Law given on Mount Sinai By Yahveh (God)! These Jews will glorify God and proclaim Christ Yeshua as the coming Messiah to all the world during the last few years of the Tribulation Period. They will be sealed and protected for this task!
The Israelites and Jews and sons of God as listed above ( numbers 5,6,7, of website list) are referred to in the bible by different names. Christians (Gentiles who accept Christ as their Savior and Messiah) are known as Judah and Jews (do not accept Christ as Savior or Messiah) are described as Jacob. Hebrews (Jew and Gentile believers in Yeshua) are referred to as Israel (in the 'end times' biblical texts).
The Hebrews (Israel) are those believers who accept Christ Yeshua as God's son, the Messiah to come, they also accept Yeshua as the Living Torah. They do not see Torah as 'legalism'. But as guidelines for Holy living. Yeshua replaced much of the Old Torah commandments such as animal sacrifices used to atone for sin. Yeshua became the slaughtered lamb to atone for sin. He also replaced the High Priest who performed the animal sacrifices to atone for the people's sin. Yeshua also became the Red heifer sacrificed so that the people and the land etc may be consecrated, cleansed and purified by the sprinkling of water over the atonement. Yeshua is referred to as 'The Living Water'.
It is the True Israel mentioned above that is chosen as the' pre- terrible times 'remnant', the group of Christians and Jews who have come together as one in the Olive Tree! They are led by the Holy Spirit and obedient to God's call to mission. They reject the world, are singled out from the rest of the world, choosing to be separate! They stand out from the rest of the population because they shine like stars in the night. The rest of the world covered in confusion are blindly groping in the darkness trying to find their way out of their corrupt and lost world! God's Holy Stars however, shine brightly and know exactly where they are going!
These Hebrews recognise that eating blood of animals or pig meat is still a relevant law and is applicable to both Christians and Jews. Gentile Hebrews (those who recognise the Roman church deception and transferred to God's Way through Yeshua HATORAH! - Yeshua The Torah) are those who are aware of the Noachide Laws given to Gentiles, prior to Torah Law given to Moses. They realise it is still relevant and essential for righteous living (with the exclusion of the Temple and sacrifice references - although we still give sacrifices in praise and worship and time).
In conclusion to Torah observance, they are not threatened or fear Torah observance because the Grace of God and the presence of Yeshua in their lives has replaced many aspects of Moshes Torah which makes it easier to follow. There is no need to sacrifice animals for atonement, there is no need to go through purity rituals because Christ replaced all of these! But it is still relevant to observe the festivals i.e. Shabbat (on Saturdays-not Sundays), it is still relevant to observe cleanliness and health laws and social rules for righteous living and the helping of others in need. It is still necessary to ask for forgiveness for our daily 'conscious' sinning. it is still necessary to do all that is required to live a holy, righteous lifestyle that Glorifies God! It is these differences that separate believers into the Remnant or the apostate! There are many Carnal Christians who will be excluded from the 'Remnant'! Carnal Christians are those who prefer the worldly lifestyle rather than righteous obedience to God, they reject God's people [Jews] and His chosen land Israel.
Those who bless Israel will be blessed and those who curse Israel will be cursed! Genesis 12: 1-3.
Israel represents the Land of Israel but also it means the people 'Israel'. Jacob and Judah are the people of Israel - in other words - The Remnant!
Do not misunderstand this statement there are righteous Jews and unrighteous Jews, there are worldly Christians and righteous Christians and it is this concept that separates those who will go through the refining period [persecution] during the Tribulation Period and those who will be part of the remnant. Whether carnal or righteous they are God's people but not all have the same pathway to eternal life, BUT ALL are given the same opportunity to return to the right and true WAY. All are given salvation at the time of their decision to follow Yeshua - meaning on this earth they are under Yeshua's ownership as sons of God, however, some have to be refined into pure gold because of their lack of faithfulness while others already entered the wilderness that leads to refinement! Many carnal Christians and secular Jews may come into the category where refinement is necessary!
It is this that places believers into the category of faithful or unfaithful, obedient or rebellious!
If you want to be part of the remnant you must be prepared to separate yourself from this apostate world! Both God and Christ have stated this many times throughout scripture, forewarning us of the consequences of 'worldliness' and the 'serving of two masters'. Divided loyalty or disobedience to God's Word has dire consequences and WILL prevent the person from becoming part of the Remnant taken up to God's throne of Grace for eternity!
God says 'He will dwell with us for ever' in His chosen Holy Land - Israel. This is a future promise!
Many believers who believe with their minds and not their hearts, have not made a commitment to follow Yeshua, preferring to follow the world, therefore following two masters, will find themselves 'left behind' they will then become the 'remnant' mentioned above as 'Tribulation Saints' in group 3, if during that time they return to their Creator God and follow their Savior Yeshua.
All of the Remnants mentioned above which have been chosen, pre-ordained, pre-selected and 'grafted in' through their obedience for righteousness, will ultimately come together as 'one man'. Together they will live in harmony during a thousand year millennium. They will be leaders and judges serving the Lord throughout the millennium! They will be privileged because of their faithfulness and steadfastness! This is a Godly Promotion that offer greater rewards than short -lived earthly ones, God's promotion is eternal!
The terms 'a surviving trace',' last part' and 'something that remains after the rest have gone', are all significant to the 'chosen End Time Remnant'. It needs to be emphasized that we are currently IN the End Times Period! We are at a very crucial part of the 'End Times' period - the world population has divided into two major parts, which form two key groups:
1. Humanistic - anti God and anti Christ.
2. Pro God and Christ
There is a war taking place between both groups in the form of a physical AND spiritual war!
The physical war can be seen and evidenced by the ethnic cleansing, persecutions and martyrdom of believers (Jews and Christians) throughout the world. The spiritual warfare is the hidden forces that control the non believing group (humanists, evolutionists anti religious etc) who are 'bound up' with sin and controlled by their weakness I,e, addictions, fear, debt, worries or enticed by pleasures, money, status, sexual promiscuity. Their minds totally controlled like puppets.
The spiritual war is the most powerful of the two wars, as the hidden forces and the tactical schemes are not seen by those of the world! The demonic influences work their way through the population corrupting and deceiving many people! The innocent are being manipulated into the apostasy that grips the whole world! This apostasy was prophesied to take place during these 'end times'. God spoke of such times as this - in great detail - in the bible. The majority of the world population have become worldly, joining the apostate world that rejects God, Yeshua, Truth, and Goodness. Many of the non-apostate people are dying from the evil of this apostate world - they die from starvation, disease and slaughter - purposefully instigated by mankind. Only a minority of the world population that choose the Creator God and Christ as their destiny for their Salvation, are left! It is these who are the Remnant!
To sum up; because of this 'end time apostasy' many people (including backsliders, weak or lukewarm believers' of Christ Yeshua and God the Creator), will become part of the chosen 'End Times Remnant'. God has already pre-ordained, pre-selected a few chosen people who remain loyal to Him and His son Christ Yeshua -the coming Messiah. He also has foreordained and is preparing a second remnant - 144,000 Jews! See scripture references below. The remnant are made up of a small group (in relation to world population) of righteous and faithful believers , some pre-ordained or predestined and others grafted in by God's grace who have come to repentance! This remnant is in context with the time period i.e. prior to the ' Tribulation -Times of Trouble', or during the 'Times of Trouble' or after the 'Times of Trouble'.
In each case 'The Remnant' is the most precious and most valuable commodity on earth!
The world has become so dark and evil and the people so blind to Truth that all righteousness will soon disappear- we are currently in a time of LAWLESSNESS -that is we are in a time when God's Torah has been rejected by the world! The Torah which includes the Ten Commandments is no longer practiced or observed or even taught among the nations, instead the new regulations, followed by the majority of Mankind, are those of evolution, humanism, Satanism, and other 'isms'.
The scribe Ezra wrote many books -some for general readership and others for the remnant only. He wrote in one of his scrolls, the following, after the Tribulation and after the resurrection of the dead and at the Judgement period, when God speaks to the condemned:
" Then the Most High will say to the Nations that have been raised from the dead "look now, and understand whom you have denied, whom you have not served, whose commandments you have despised! Look on this side or on that, here are delight and rest and here are fire and torment! A day that has no sun or moon or stars or cloud or thunder or lightning or wind or water, air, darkness, evening or morning, summer or spring, frost or heat... only the splendour of the glory of the Most High... The world to come will bring delight to few and torments to many.
An evil heart has grown up in us, alienating us from God, brought us into corruption and death. That is almost ALL who have been created! For this reason God has made TWO worlds not one. What is more rare is precious. He who has what is hard to get rejoices more than he who has what is plentiful.
Those who dwell on Earth shall be tormented because though they had understanding they committed iniquity, though they received the commandments did not keep them, though they obtained the Law they dealt unfaithfully with what they received. How will these answer in last times? :
After death as soon as a person yields up his soul, do they go into rest until those times come, a new heaven and earth; or tormented at once? God answers; " When God decides when a person is to die, as the spirit leaves the body to return again to him- first it adores the glory of the Most High. and if it is one of those who have shown scorn and not kept the way of the Most High, and despised the Law and hated those who fear God - these spirits shall not enter into habitations, but shall immediately wander in torments, grieving and sad in 7 ways.
1. First way- because they scorned the Law.
2. Because they now can't repent, to get salvation.
3. they shall see the reward laid up for those who have trusted the covenants of the Most High.
4. They shall consider the torment laid up for themselves in the last days.
5. They shall see how the habitations of the others are guarded by angels in profound quiet.
6. They shall see how some of them will pass over into torments.
7. The worse of them all - because they shall utterly waste away in confusion and be consumed with shame and shall wither with fear at seeing the glory of the Most High before whom they sinned, and will be judged by in last times.
Those who have kept God's ways: They shall be separated from their mortal body during the time they lived in it they laboriously served the Most High and withstood danger every hour, that they might keep the Law of God perfectly . Their reward: They shall see with great joy the glory of Him who receives them, for they shall have rest in 7 orders:
1,Because they have striven with great effort to overcome the evil thought which was formed with them, that it might not lead them astray from life into death.
2. They see how the ungodly souls wander and punishment awaits them.
3, They see the witness which he who formed them bears concerning them, that while they were alive they kept the Law which was given them in trust.
4. They understand the rest which they now enjoy, being gathered into their chambers and guarded by angels in profound quiet and glory awaits them in last days.
5. They rejoice they have now escaped what is corruptible and shall inherit what is to come, and see from what they have been delivered and the spacious liberty received and enjoyed in immortality.
6. It is shown to them how their face is to shine like the sun, and make like the light of stars, being incorruptible from then on.
7. Greater than all previous they shall rejoice with boldness, confident without confusion and glad without fear. They hasten to behold the face of him whom they served in life and from whom they are to receive their reward when glorified.
After death souls are free for 7 days to see the things mentioned then they go to their homes. The righteous will not be able to intercede for the ungodly. It's already set. No one can pray for another on that day! Everyone shall bear his own righteousness or unrighteousness. "
" God made this world for the sake of many but the world to come for the sake of few. For many miseries will affect those who inhabit the world in the last days, because they have walked in great pride. It is for the righteous that paradise is opened.
4 Ezra (2 Esdras 3-14)

The remnant will return, the remnant of Jacob to the Mighty God. For though your people, O Israel, be as the sand of the sea, a remnant of them will return..."
Isaiah 11:11-16 These verses refer to the whole history of God's people the Israelites and Jews and continues to the present end time period in Chapter 12 where his people receive salvation. Readers must understand that God's scriptures always consist of 'dualism' - He has a historical interpretation which is also an end time prediction. So that scripture is relevant for all time periods.
Isaiah 37:4 Says, " Lift up your prayer for the remnant that is left."

Jeremiah 6:9 Let them glean the remnant of Israel as thoroughly as a vine, pass your hand over the branches again, like one gathering grapes. God is referring to those secular Jews and orthodox Jews following the Rabbis Torah - it is reference to their punishment - but the remaining righteous Christ believing Jews will become the remnant. This sifting between the wheat and chaff where the wheat is the righteous remnant and the chaff of set aside for punishment, as bad grapes cannot be bad good!
Jeremiah 23:3 This is a very important end time scripture." Woe to the shepherds who are destroying and scattering the sheep...because you have scattered my flock and driven them away and have not bestowed care on them I will bestow punishment on you for the evil you have done", declares the Lord. " I myself will gather the remnant of my flock out of all the countries, where I have driven them, and bring them back to their pasture, where they will be fruitful and increase in number....
Jeremiah 23:5 "The days are coming", declares the Lord, When I will raise up to David a righteous Branch, a King who will reign wisely and do what is just and right in the land. Yeshua a descendant of David and known as the righteous branch and the future King, His days will start at the end time and the start of the Millennium reign, as prophesied during the scriptures. See also Jer 31:7 to 32:. Yeshua is referred to as a Branch in Isaiah 4:2. see also Isaiah 9:6, Isa 11, Isa 13, Isa 16:5. Yeshua is referred to as righteous in verses referring to King Melchizedek which in Hebrew means righteous king.

I was asked this very interesting question and before it can be answered we need to look at the whole picture. The whole of Biblical and historical records testify to many great biblical men who performed uniquely...
Does salvation mean also eternal life? Is the word salvation misunderstood? Is eternal life different to salvation? If so, how does it differ? What is the implication or consequences of this?
