The Revelation (Prophecies of the Revelation)
Part 6 - The Beast and the Image of the Beast
The book of Revelation, the last book of the Bible, was written by John, who was a disciple of Jesus Christ. Revelation is mostly about the prophetic visions John had concerning the end of the world. He described many of these visions in symbolic language.
In this article, you can read what John wrote about a beast rising up out of the sea, and the dragon that gave him power. In addition, you can read what John wrote about a second beast coming up out of the earth. This beast will cause people to worship the first beast. This article offers a possible interpretation of these prophetic visions.
Revelation, Chapter 13, Verses 1 through 4:
I stood on the sand of the sea, and saw a beast rise up out of the sea. The beast had seven heads and ten horns, and on his horns were ten crowns, and on his heads was the name of blasphemy. The beast that I saw was like a leopard, and his feet were like the feet of a bear, and his mouth was like the mouth of a lion. The dragon gave him his power, and his throne, and great authority.
I saw one of the heads of the beast that seemed to be fatally wounded; but his deadly wound was healed, and the world was amazed by the beast. People worshipped the dragon that gave power to the beast. And they worshipped the beast, saying, "Who is like the beast, and who is able to make war against him?"
The prophetic vision that John had of a beast rising up out of the sea will actually be a man called the Antichrist. He will soon rise to power, first as a man of peace. Then he will become a horrific dictator who forms the final world government. The beast had seven heads and ten horns, and on his horns were ten crowns, and on his heads was the name of blasphemy.
The seven heads of the beast represent six world governments that have existed before. The seventh will be the final world government. It will begin after its development during the first half of the Tribulation Period.
The Tribulation Period will be a seven-year period of disastrous events on earth that will occur as a result of God's judgment on an evil world. No one knows exactly when the Tribulation Period will begin, but it will most likely be soon.
The beast refers to the Antichrist, and the seventh world government that he will control. The ten horns of the beast represent the ten rulers that will be in power with the Antichrist during the Tribulation Period.
The ten crowns represent the ten divisions of the seventh world government. On the heads of the beast was the name of blasphemy. This refers to the contempt for God and Christianity that the world governments had and will have.
The beast was like a leopard; this most likely refers to a coalition of Arabic nations. He had feet like those of a bear; this probably refers to Russia, which will likely invade Israel. He had a mouth like that of a lion; this probably refers to England and its allies.
The dragon gave him his power, and his throne, and great authority. This refers to the beginning of the seventh world government that will be ruled by the Antichrist. He will receive his power and authority from Satin, the Devil.
John saw one of the heads of the beast that seemed to be fatally wounded, but his deadly wound was healed. Soon after the Antichrist begins his rule, Satan will cause him to appear to be fatally wounded. Most people will believe that he has been killed but, miraculously, he will recover from his seemingly fatal wound.
This incident will be a deception by Satan to make people believe that the Antichrist was raised from the dead. Many people will then worship Satin, who will give power to the Antichrist. They will be amazed by the Antichrist; they will believe he is invincible and worship him.
Revelation, Chapter 13, Verses 5 through 10:
The beast was given a mouth to speak great words and blasphemies, and power was given to him to continue for forty-two months. The beast opened his mouth to blaspheme God, and to blaspheme God's name, His church, and those who live in Heaven. He was given power to make war with the saints, and to overcome them. And he was given power over all tribes, and people of all languages and nations.
All those who live on the earth will worship the beast; all whose names are not written in the Book of Life that belongs to the Lamb that was slain from the foundation of the world. If any man have an ear, let him hear. He who leads into captivity will go into captivity. He who kills with the sword must be killed with the sword. This is the patience and faith of the saints.
The Antichrist will make great speeches and curse the true God. He will even go to the temple in Jerusalem and declare himself to be God. He will be given power and authority during the last half of the Tribulation Period, which will last for forty-two months or three and a half years. The Antichrist and his government will have contempt for God and Christians.
The Antichrist will spread lies about God, God's church, the Jews, and those who live in Heaven. The Antichrist will be given power to make war against Christians; he will persecute them and have them killed. He will eventually be given authority over all people of every nation.
All those who worship the Antichrist will have their names removed from the Book of Life that belongs to Jesus. Anyone who can read and understand what is written in Revelation should heed its warning about the terrible events of the Tribulation Period. The Antichrist will kill those who do not submit to him, but in the end he and his followers will be destroyed. Christians should be patient and remain loyal to God.
Revelation, Chapter 13, Verses 11 through 18:
Then I saw another beast, coming up out of the earth; this beast had two horns like a lamb, but he spoke like a dragon. He exercised all the power of the first beast, and caused those who live on the earth to worship the first beast, whose fatal wound had been healed.
He performed great miracles, such as making fire come down from heaven to the earth in the sight of men. He deceived those who live on the earth by means of those miracles that he had power to do in the sight of the first beast. He told those who live on the earth that they should make an image of the beast that was wounded by a sword and yet lived.
He had power to give life to the image of the beast, so that it could speak and cause those who would not worship the image to be killed. And he ordered everyone, small and great, rich and poor, free and enslaved, to receive a mark on his or her right hand or forehead. And no one could buy or sell unless he had the mark of either the name of the beast or the number of his name.
Here is wisdom; let those who have understanding calculate the number of the beast because it is the number of a man, and his number is 666.
John saw another beast that came up from the earth. This beast symbolizes the False Prophet who will appear to be a soft-natured man, but he will be like a wolf in sheep's clothing. He will have strong opinions about certain controversial subjects and give speeches about those subjects.
The Antichrist and the False Prophet will accumulate power, and will eventually be equal in power. However, the False Prophet will use his power to exalt the Antichrist during the Tribulation Period.
Satan will display counterfeit miracles through the False Prophet, such as causing fire to come down from Heaven. The False Prophet will deceive many people by the miracles he performs in support of the Antichrist. He will suggest that an image be made of the Antichrist who had been fatally wounded and recovered.
The image of the Antichrist will probably be a statue that will be erected in the temple in Jerusalem. The False Prophet will be empowered by Satan to give life to the statue, programming it to speak on behalf of the Antichrist. This can easily be accomplished with modern technology. The statue will announce that those who refuse to worship it will be killed.
The False Prophet will order everyone to receive a certain mark on his or her right hand or forehead. This mark will be known as the Mark of the Beast; no one will be able to buy or sell unless he or she has that mark, which is the name of the Antichrist or the number of his name. This will provide a way for the Antichrist to know who is being loyal to him.
Can we identify the Antichrist? To identify him requires wisdom. An intelligent person will be able to calculate the name of the Antichrist, which will equal the number of a man, and his number is 666.
His name will be able to be calculated using an alphanumeric system that was used in ancient times. With this system, each letter has an equivalent number and each number has an equivalent letter. No one, however, will be able to know who the Antichrist is until after the Tribulation Period begins.
The beginning of the Tribulation Period will happen just before the Rapture. This is when Jesus returns, and takes all Christians to Heaven. Those Christians who had died will be resurrected and taken with those who are living at the time. No one but God knows exactly when the Rapture will occur, but we should all be prepared.
Those who are not Christians will have to endure the terrible time of tribulation. Some will turn to Jesus during that time. They will not worship the beast or the image of the beast, and they will not receive the mark of the beast. The beast or Antichrist will have them killed, but they will be resurrected at the end of the tribulation. They will receive eternal life and be with the Lord forever.
From the Bible:
Let no one deceive you in any way. That day will not come until a falling away occurs, and that man of sin is revealed, the son of perdition. He opposes and exalts himself above all that is called God or that is worshipped, so that he is like God, sitting in the temple of God, and declaring that he is God.
(2 Thessalonians, Chapter 2, Verses 3 and 4)
