Mary and the Wonderful Story of the Annunciation--For Kids

The Annunciation--The Visitation of the Angelic Messenger to Mary

In the city of Nazareth in Galilee, there lived a young woman named Mary.

Mary was betrothed to a carpenter named Joseph.

One day an angel , Gabriel visited Mary. -"Mary!" he announced," you that you have received the favor of God! The Lord is with you.

She was disturbed because  she was not sure what these words meant.

The angel told her not to be afraid because he had been sent by God. The angel then told  her that God had chosen her to have a very special  baby and that his name would be Jesus.

Pure and Immaculate She Bowed Before the Angelic Messenger

In Holy obedience Mary, the Mother of Our Lord Jesus, was told by the Angel of God that she would be filled in a miraculous manner with the Spirit of God, a scene which has been uncounted times recorded by Renaissance artists such as Caravaggio, as well as pre-renaissance painters and those of many other ages and times, to illustrate the pre-nativity event leading to such good tidings that would succeed it in the birth of Christ. Reading the passages in the New Testament we can only be humbled by Mary's humility, a paragon of humility, that composers like Bach have termed 'Magnificat' in their hommage to the maiden and her unquestioned acceptance of the message of the Angel and his visitation of the immaculate, virginal Mary.

The baby will grow up to be a great man, and his reign will never end. "So the holy child to be born will be called the Son of God."

Mary knelt before the angel Gabriel and said she would obey God and what God wanted. With this, the angel left her.

Explanation:

The Annunciation is found in the New Testament, the message that the angel Gabriel comes to Mary and  that she will be the mother of Jesus we find in  Luke 1:26-38

The Annunciation is celebrated on March 25.

The scene between Gabriel and Mary has been represented in masterpieces of painting, especially Italian artist Leonardo da Vinci and Sandro Botticelli and the German painter Matthias Grünewald.

The Biblical story of the Annunciation is very appropriate for Mother's Day, in May:

For the Churh, the Month of Mary is  March but Commemoration of the Annunciation is appropriate at any time of year.

The success of the Annunciation is a crucial moment of great importance for Christians. In the Old Testament God makes a covenant with the people of Israel. In the New Testament we read of the "new" covenant God brings in everyone .

The new agreement, or promise refers to Jesus: His birth, life, death and resurrection and how He brings hope to all people in the world.

For Christians, the event of the Annunciation is the beginning of the new agreement - the promise when the Angel Gabriel announces to Mary that she will have a baby and that this will be the Son of God.

Suggestions for discussion with young children:

It is obviously very complicated and difficult to explain all the events that bring us to the moment of the Annunciation to young children. Yet it is very beautiful and appropriate to share the story so memorable and explain some very important messages that they can understand.

For example: We can tell children that God promised to send Jesus to teach us especially to love one another. God chose Mary among women to be the mother of Jesus, the Son of God.

We can explain:  The reaction and response of Mary to the announcement of God is very important and relevant as this sends a message to the children of love, faith and obedience that she shows at that time. These are topics of discussion that can present and discuss.

Further:  We introduce the topic of angels. God sends angels on several occasions and they are messengers of his word. In this case God sent the angel Gabriel to bring this message to Mary.

Activities for Children

  Art Appreciation:

The Annunciation
An image such as a painting is a very good way to introduce children to the beauty and importance of a biblical story. At the same time we can teach children a love of art. Share with the children some  paintings that you like and explain that these are paintings of great painters who show The Annunciation. These painters were inspired by the story of the Annunciation and as such tThese paintings are in museums where people from around the world will observe and these continue to mark this important Bible story.

Coloring Pages -and Cut-outs

After seeing the pictures, tell the children that they too can paint and decorate their own images of the Annunciation.  Use the above as a colouring page.

Or, use this activity to tell children about Angels:
