Genesis - In the Beginning - Bible Series Part 1

In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. Genesis 1:1

Genesis is the book of beginnings. All major religions have their roots in the book of Genesis.

Let's start with the first three words "In the beginning". This denotes the beginning of TIME.
God lives OUTSIDE of time. That's what makes Him God. God has no beginning. He knows the end from the beginning. He is outside of the TIME realm and looking in at the universe and He sees the beginning and He sees the end. He's not part of time - He lives OUTSIDE of the time domain. This is very important to understand as we get to know the God of the Bible.

"Declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times the things that are not yet done, saying, My counsel shall stand, and I will do all my pleasure:" Isaiah 46:10 KJV

The next two words are equally as important "God created". I have been studying the Bible since 1983, when my husband and I went to Bible school, to prepare for ministry. 30+ years later, I'm still studying the Bible! What I've learned is that throughout the Scriptures, God desires to be recognized as Creator. The New Testament talks about what happens when people don't recognize Him as Creator, but rather worship the creation. As we walk through the Bible in this series of Hubs, I'll talk more about those Scriptures. Until then, here's an Old Testament Scripture regarding God as Creator.

"Remember now thy Creator in the days of thy youth, while the evil days come not, nor the years draw nigh, when thou shalt say, I have no pleasure in them;" Eccl 12:1 KJV

The two main theories of how the world began are: 1) God created the world. 2) The Big Bang Theory. Personally, for me, it takes more faith to believe we just 'happened' then it does to recognized we were created by a Creator. The Big Bang Theory is like blowing up a Home Depot and expecting it to come down and create a beautiful house - without an architect or carpenters.

As we study the Bible - it's important to understand the character of God and that He lives outside of the time domain and He is all-powerful, all-knowing, and that He knows the end from the beginning. Also understanding that as the Creator, He alone has the right to make the rules - NOT US! That's why we must find out what the Bible says, so we can rightly divide the Word of God.

Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. 2 Timothy 2:15 KJV

God is love and He is also just and righteous. So, whatever He does, He does with the end in mind. So, for us as human beings living within the time domain, not seeing the big picture and understanding the character of God - if we are not careful we can make wrong assumptions about why things happen to us and other people. We can think that God doesn't care - when the opposite it true. He cares so much that He created the world, you and I in His IMAGE and LIKENESS with a purpose - and knew we would sin and fall away from Him and He made a way for us to come back to Him through sending His Son to pay the price for your and my sins.

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. John 3:15 KJV

The last part of verse one of Genesis 1:1 is "heaven and the earth". God created the heaven and the earth. The Hebrew word for heaven is shamayim, which means: heaven, heavens, sky, as abode of the stars, as the visible universe, the sky, atmosphere, etc.

We find in the first verse of the Bible -

In the Beginning = TIME

Heavens = SPACE

Earth = MATTER

Science says that the universe is made up of - TIME, SPACE and MATTER.

As we study through the Bible, you'll see that God has revealed and made known all kinds of facts, prophecies and information that could only come from outside of our time domain as we know it.

Here's a great video that explains more about Genesis 1:1 - Hope you'll watch it.
