The Rich Man-The Cow-and Two Traveling Angels-A Short Chritmas Story-

Angels Among Us
Angels Among Us

I read this story somewhere years ago, and though it had no author attached to it and I can not remember exactly how it was written I thought it a really nice story to share and so, I have written what I remember of it as close as I can remember to what I had read , and the point made remains the same.

Two Traveling Angels

Two traveling Angels appearing cold, poor, hungry and in need of a place to stay for the evening knock on the door of a mansion.

The owner of the mansion refuses to allow them to stay in the main house.

"Put them up for the evening in the basement." He insisted to his butler.

That evening as the angels lay in the cold basement the elder angel notices a large hole in the wall and immediately seals it up.

While traveling the very next day the younger angel asked , "Why did you help that man? He had a huge house and plenty of food, but refused to share and made us sleep in the cold , cold basement."

."Nothing is as it seems." Replied the elder angel.

The very next evening the angels come upon the home of a poor farmer and his wife.

The couple allow them in , feed them supper and since the angels appear exhausted, the poor couple insit the angels sleep in their bed that evening.

The very next morning upon awakening to the screams and sobbing of horror and despair coming from the farmers wife , the younger angel looks out into the field,

Marie, the farmer's only dairy cow and sole source of income lay dead in the field.

Angrily , the Younger angel asks the elder angel, "How could you let this happen.? The poor farmer and his wife gave all they had, yet you let their only cow die!"

The rich man offered no food and made us sleep in the cold, cold, basement yet you helped him, you fixed his wall!"

"Nothing is as it seems." The elder angel replied.

"There was gold in that wall. Since the rich man refused to share what he had I sealed the wall up so that he would never find it.

Last night when the Angel of Death came for the poor farmers wife, I gave him the cow instead."

I've heard of this story before, but enlightening to hear of it again! Thanks for sharing it with us here. =)

Pay no mind to anything negatively written about this hub, what matters is what everyone takes away from it personally. You've shared a simple story, how others decide to rationalize from it is their own responsibility. Heck, I think any response is one worth reading, your writing prompted someone enough to take the time to write back upon...I say you should take it as a compliment that you sparked one's mind to go that far. =)

uh.... I'm a guy and I got it. I'm not sure what this other fellow is so upset about. I thought the story was lyrical and poignant, and I appreciate your sharing it.

Hi Starme,

I read the thread in the forum and now the story and the comments. It does seem a little confusing the way the comment was written. I think the meaning behind the story is a great lesson on how to view your life and circiumstances. Thanks for sharing it.Nice to be reminded of lifes little joys, even if you have to look for them.

I came over from the forums too, and although I'd heard this tale before, I thought you wrote it really well, and it's a nice uplifting reminder that when things seem bad, they could be a lot worse!

Starme:

I didn't read this "hub."

I read the "illiterate's" comment.

Why pay attention to a comment by a person who can't write, misspells and can't understand what he reads?

C'mon girl, consider the source!

Just keep writing.

I have heard this story to before and it was a blessing nothing negative. The angel in turn save the wife over the cow and allowed the farmer to have what he loved the most. A cow can be replaced or eaten but a life is priceless! I certainly do not see anything wrong with the hub. :)

Starme it is a good story. It is sad that there are people in the world that just can not keep their ugly to themselves. do not worry about the Nay saying gentlmen above I believe he has a his panties in a bunch and just wanted to vent his frustration on someone.

I enjoyed this hub as well and don't pay any attention to the man behind the curtain he can't spell. I have been blonde for a long time and I am in no way dumb or stupid. People just like to try to bring others down. I know I am very sensitive about my hubs as well. Don't worry. Blessings and I like people who believe in angels.

I think this is an excellent story of "nothing ever appears as it seems."

As for the gold being given to the poor family..well, whether you've wealth or not does not determine the quality of love that may exist in your household.

Poor cow.
