What Are Signs and Wonders?

What is the definition of signs and wonders?

It’s been a phrase used by "Christians" in "churches," books, and conferences to describe a whole myriad of different things. For instance, here a few of the common terms linked to the “signs and wonders” movement:

  • Laughing, making animal sounds
  • Being “slain” in the spirit
  • Being “drunk” in the spirit
  • Supernatural movement; shaking of the body or head
  • Gold dust, oil from heaven, feathers, gems and diamonds
  • Angel visitations, portals

If these things are happening in the "church" arena today, what does all this mean?

If you peruse YouTube, check the latest "Christian" conferences in your city, you will see these things are happening right now.

Is this a supernatural movement of the Holy Spirit, or is it a paranormal manifestation of another spirit?

I myself have been exposed to these manifestations listed above and believed in it to some extent at one point, but not anymore. I have come to realize that I became “bedazzled” or “bewitched” by all these “signs and wonders” that my eyes glossed over and I became caught up in the flesh so to speak. It made me feel good; it was what I wanted to hear, but left me confused.

After many years of my own personal investigation, I have come to some important conclusions. Firstly, I believe we need to weigh and test everything on the character of Jesus Christ and who he is by referencing Scripture. He showed his love for the people in the Bible, and when he ascended into heaven, the Holy Spirit was and is available to each and every one, then and now. What I am trying to say is, that if the Holy Spirit is in us, it can therefore manifest through us to reach the hurting and the lost.

Secondly, ask yourself this question, who did Jesus serve, was it God, himself, or the Devil?

Now, do these manifestations or “signs and wonders” in the above list document what Jesus Christ was doing and whom He was serving during his time here on earth?

If the Holy Spirit is in me, is this what it should look like, and is this manifestation documented in the Bible?

If we look at Scripture, there is a different signs and wonders list than the one above. It serves a different purpose.

  • Casting out of demons
  • Providing food for the hungry
  • Repentance and God’s grace

We live in dark times whether you may realize it or not. Millions of babies are aborted, but the “charismatics” are laughing and cackling like chickens in their corporate buildings. Children are starving in Africa, but the “charismatics” are “bedazzled” by gold dust, diamonds and feathers.

Is this what true revival looks like? Does the character of God look like these carnal pleasures and experiences?

True revival, I believe, is repentance and harvesting of lost souls through the power of the Holy Spirit. That is true joy, not being part of a horde of cackling animal sounds in a drunken stupor.

Let no one keep defrauding you of your prize by delighting in self-abasement and the worship of the angels, taking his stand on vision she has seen, inflated without cause by his fleshly mind - Colossians 2:18

Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded. Be miserable and mourn and weep; let your laughter be turned into mourning and your joy to gloom. Humble yourselves in the presence of the Lord, and He will exalt you. - James 4:8-10

Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world. - 1 John 4:1

Scripture is saying many false prophets are out there, not a few peppered here and there. Be on guard! Put on the full armor of God!

No wonder, for even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light. Therefore it is not surprising if his servants also disguise themselves as servants of righteousness, whose end will be according to their deeds. - 2 Corinthians 11:14-15

But the Spirit explicitly says that in later times some will fall away from the faith, paying attention to deceitful spirits and doctrines of demons - 1 Timothy 4:1

Do you ever notice that these false prophets rarely touch Scripture, but get you bewitched by their testimonies and stories of glory?

The modern counterfeit "church" today has been infiltrated by spiritual alchemy, mass hypnotism, divination, apparition experiences, mysticism and the psychometric (paranormal).

The sheep are dying. Many need to heed this warning and allow the Holy Spirit to reveal to them the craftiness of these false doctrines of demons and the carnal religious men who practice them.

Paul wrote to the Corinth church and emphasized some important issues:

  • Another Jesus - the name is the same, but not the Jesus of the Bible.
  • Another Spirit - different nature and character than of Jesus Christ.
  • Another Gospel – different Gospel that what Paul preached.

Do you truly know what you believe?

We are in a battle for truth. Ask Jesus to reveal any deception that you may have taken on or may have exposed yourself to and ask Him to reveal the truth to you. He will do it. I myself know that I am not perfect, but know I need to fully rely on Jesus Christ, His strength (grace) and His Word to pursue truth in these crazy times we live in.

God bless you in your pursuit for truth.

Very, very good points and well stated. I too feel that people are going to extremes to show how they love Jesus, they are wondering around the truth and declaring what they have done to be of the "spirit". I will not judge them but I do wonder just where they came up with some of the GARBAGE they put out. It is almost cultish at times. Nowhere recorded in the Bible are some of these antics we see today in some of these churches.I am glad someone will stand up and use clarity of Scriptures about this cause.

Hi Michael,

I concur, just like counterfeit money, it takes a detection system to tell the real from the fake. I am so glad we have the Bible to refute the false "currency" that is circulating among us.

Was delighted to read this. I have been arrested many times and spent 10 days in jail confronting these opposing spirits. These events in my life are appointed by God and I have come to know Him more than ever before. He will be glorified. I was given a prophetic song in 1991 which was to be announced to His people to prepare them for what is now and is to come. Everyone who wants to live a Godly life will be persecuted. The song is for edification, admonition and consolation. God will have the final word and He loves justice. God bless!

TJ,

The important thing is asking who is being glorified.

Many do not want to hear truth because it ruffles too many feathers.

The important truth about prophecy is that it is summed up in the consummation of God’s eternal purpose through Jesus Christ.

Thank-you for reading and commenting.

Excellent! I've been so sad and dismayed at all the 'white magic' going around these days and the deceptions. Satan sure is the master deceiver and there is a great war between him and God going on. Grateful for Jesus' promise to keep and protect those who are his own and who call upon his name and adhere to God's word. May we who are his keep repentant hearts and hold on to what we have been already given.

Thank-you Ms Dee,

Simply put, these false teachers are using New Age philosophy and techniques that have their roots in occultism. Many people are ignorant of the origins of these practices, which are in no way founded on, or in the teachings of Scripture.

One influential leader who sells her apostasy within the larger church spectrum is quoted as claiming:

"Two members of our team and I had just finished a prayer session to prepare for our evening meeting at Tim and Cindy McGill’s Four Square Church. As we were praising the Father for the downloads we had received, we heard that there was still more for us. That’s when we noticed the presence of angelic orbs over our heads. How glorious! God is so good!We began to praise and worship Him for this Heavenly Presence. All of a sudden, one of our team (Shirley Ross), heard from the Lord that we were to clap our hands together over our heads where the orbs were. When we did, it was as if the orbs burst open and showered us in Heavenly Glory! Different colored orbs appeared and filled the room over our heads. We clapped and clapped and clapped. Some of the orbs rained down a thick, sweet oil. Others left us feeling tingly and effervescent. The Joy of the Lord was everywhere as we were refreshed, renewed and empowered. These “exploding” orbs covered us in an anointing of His Presence and also helped to deeply seat the inspiration and revelation we had received from Him throughout that day. Thank you Father!"

Unfortunately, if you take this claim and parallel it with the hermetical writings in The third and last Book of Magick, or Occult Philosophy," written by Henry Cornelius Agrippa, you will find the same philosophy:

"therefore they invented so many Intelligences or Angels; they placed also in the Starry heaven, Angels, who might rule the signs, triplicities, decans, quinaries, degrees and Stars; for although the school of the Peripateticks assigne one onely intelligence to each of the Orbs of the Stars: yet seeing every Star and small part of the heaven hath its proper and different power and influence, it is necessary that it also have his ruling intelligence"

Here is a quote from "La Clef des Grands Mystères"(The Key to the Great Mysteries) written by Eliphas Levi. Alister Crowley claimed to be a reincarnation of Eliphas.

"And while all this tumult was going on at the bottom of the church, the singing of the litanies continued in the choir, {170} as the harmony of the orbs of heaven goes on for ever, careless in our revolations and of our anguish."

Helena Blavatsky, co-founder of the Theosophical Society, wrote in her book, "The Secret Doctrine: The Synthesis of Science, Religion, and Philosophy":

"For the circle is Sar, and Saros, or cycle, and was the Babylonian god whose circular horizon was the visible symbol of the invisible, while the sun was the ONE Circle from which proceeded the Cosmic orbs, and of which he was considered the leader."

"In order to avoid creating new misconceptions, let it be stated that among the three secret orbs (or star-angels) neither Uranus nor Neptune entered; not only because they were unknown under these names to the ancient Sages, but because they, as all other planets, however many there may be, are the gods and guardians of other septenary chains of globes within our systems."

A brief study on these authors will reveal something that is in complete opposition to Jesus Christ; it is the worship of Lucifer, which should have no place within the church body. The Bible talks of signs and wonders, but do not have to do with the ones in this theme. Manifestations of gold dust can be referenced in the book, "Alchemy Unveiled," not the Bible.

These manifestations are not in the Bible, but can be referenced in occult literature; the evidential conclusion can be summed up in these Bible verses:

“There shall not be found among you anyone who makes his son or his daughter pass through the fire, one who uses divination, one who practices witchcraft, or one who interprets omens, or a sorcerer, or one who casts a spell, or a medium, or a spiritist, or one who calls up the dead.“For whoever does these things is detestable to the LORD; and because of these detestable things the LORD your God will drive them out before you. - Deuteronomy 18:10-12

Thanks again for your thoughts.

I agree that Satan is very deceiptful and he had done a number of many christians through the new age movement. I do caution, however, over generalizing your observations. To be slain in the spirit is not a bad thing...as a matter of fact the holiest people I know (very conservative and scripture based) are open to receiving the Holy Spirit in a powerful way. It might manifest in a way that may make some people feel uncomfortable but that does not make it evil. I am not talking about new age...I am talking about intense prayer to Jesus Christ that causes some people to be slain in the spirit. Do further prayer on this. You need to be careful, yes, but you also do not want to possibly bear false witness on fellow brothers and sisters in Christ who are not into new age.

Sturgeonl,

Thanks for reading and commenting, but I have to disagree. The observations I have made have come from my own experiences and I have seen the collateral damage and shipwreck of those who have, and are partaking in this type of behaviour.

("To be slain in the spirit is not a bad thing...as a matter of fact the holiest people I know (very conservative and scripture based) are open to receiving the Holy Spirit in a powerful way.")

I don’t base what I believe is truth because of who I know or my personal feelings, but what it says in God’s Word.

When Scripture is applied, there is no basis for the concept of being "slain in the spirit" by someone waving their arms, touching, or pushing someone backwards to the ground. From the accounts in Scripture, the people who experienced God's powerful presence fell forward in awe towards Him.

When I saw Him, I fell at His feet like a dead man. – Revelation 1:17

Such was the appearance of the likeness of the glory of the LORD. And when I saw it, I fell on my face and heard a voice speaking. – Ezekiel 1:28

When the disciples heard this, they fell face down to the ground and were terrified. - Matthew 17:6

So he came near to where I was standing, and when he came I was frightened and fell on my face… – Daniel 8:17

Being “slain in the spirit” is the same spirit found in occult religions and is nothing new. For example, in Hinduism, when a guru touches someone, a spirit is transferred which overcomes that person and they get knocked to the ground, laugh, and shake. This is the same type of behaviour that goes on in the apostate charismatic revival services.

This is not a matter of prayer, or bearing false witness, but a matter of weighing and testing Scripture for truth. To say an experience is not evil without any Biblical proof is simply an opinion with no foundation. By examining Scripture, there is no evidence or record in the Bible of anyone falling backwards under the power of the Holy Spirit. We cannot alter God’s Word to fit our own needs and desires and try to justify experiences because they seem holy.

I realise this issue will ruffle feathers, but with the evidence I have seen, there is not enough proof for me to believe that "being slain in the spirit" is from God.

The Holy Spirit is a Person, not an impersonal power to be wielded at will like Simon the sorcerer who performed many paranormal tricks.

And they were giving him attention because he had for a long time astonished them with his magic arts. - Acts 8:11

When there is a phenomena in the church, it does not mean it is the power of the Holy Spirit. "Christianized" seducing spirits are allowed to function in the church due to lack of Biblical precedence.

“Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father who is in heaven will enter. “Many will say to Me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in Your name, and in Your name cast out demons, and in Your name perform many miracles?’ “And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; DEPART FROM ME, YOU WHO PRACTICE LAWLESSNESS.’ - Matthew 7:21-23

It also says in the bible that when His children ask for bread he will not give them a stone. I have been slain in the spirit...not because I was seeking to be but because the Lord God placed His spirit on me with such intensity. The evil one CANNOT deliver peace and joy...only our Lord Jesus Christ. If you seek to know Jesus Christ with all your heart and pray for discernment then the Lord gives it to you. Ask and you shall receive. Looking in scripture to see if the person fell backwards or forwards is not the important point in the scripture you provided. Two of your scriptures do not say which way the person falls. Would it be better if I said that I have also fallen forward when slain in the spirit? The power of laying hands is a very clear message in our scripture. The conversion of Saul happens by this great act. I know that I am one with Our Lord Jesus Christ. I am very close to Him and the peace He gives is beyond all comprehension. I have an intimate relationship with HIM. One caution, if you are only using the scripture without prayer to the Holy Spirti when reading the bible you will be open to error from the evil one. I feel you probably did not ask Jesus Christ directly regarding this and really pray on it. If your ego does not want to be wrong then for sure you will not be open to know and understand this great grace and miracle that many followers of JESUS CHRIST experience.

Sturgeonl,

I am not making a judgement on your salvation or your relationship with Jesus Christ, but on the term "slain in the spirit" as it is nowhere to be found in Scripture.

("Two of your scriptures do not say which way the person falls.")

All the verses I used as examples are pertinent because you cannot fall backwards on your face.

Also there is a parallel with the characteristics of being "slain in the spirit" with false religions. The evidence is irrefutable.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-RVAu1uGkew

("I feel you probably did not ask Jesus Christ directly regarding this and really pray on it.")

Again, what you feel has no relevance to the truth of Scripture, or your personal feelings on whether I pray or not. Without any evidence, you are relying on assumptions. The cliché "pray about it" is a “christianized” way of avoiding the issue.

If I am over-generalizing, bearing false witness, and being egotistical, please provide your evidence so we can walk it out.

(“The power of laying hands is a very clear message in our scripture.”)

I agree, Bible warns about the laying of hands and to not just let anyone lay hands on you.

Do not lay hands upon anyone too hastily and thereby share responsibility for the sins of others; keep yourself free from sin. – 1 Timothy 5:27

(“The conversion of Saul happens by this great act.”)

Let’s look at the Scripture and see if Saul was “slain in the spirit.”

As he was traveling, it happened that he was approaching Damascus, and suddenly a light from heaven flashed around him; and he fell to the ground… - Acts 9:3-4

God can move with incredible power, but being “slain in the spirit” is not verified in the Bible. Many use this verse as an example that Saul was “slain in the spirit,” but he was forced to be laid low because of the bright light and because of his sin (“Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting Me?”). If you read on, the characteristics of this experience are quite different than preachers going around putting their hands on people’s foreheads causing them to fall down.

It is important to remain close to the word of God to guide our practices and our words and not let our emotional state guide our beliefs.

The manifestation of the Holy Spirit is about awe, worship, and adoration towards Jesus Christ, not a lack of self-control of not being aware, alert, or in a conscious state.

Be of sober spirit, be on the alert. Your adversary, the devil, prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. – 1 Peter 5:8

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, **self-control**; against such things there is no law. – Galatians 5:22-23

April,

There are many that believe in signs and wonders via the "Holy Spirit," but it is another spirit that they are entertaining. There are those that believe in Jesus Christ, but it is another Jesus. We are test the spirits to see whether it is God or not.

Because you say so is not discernment, but what is filtered through the Word of God that takes precedence.

This article is gold. I have been deeply studying The Holy Spirit and one of the things I came to understand is to question 'being slain the Spirit' it's not biblical and it serves no purpose. The Holy Spirit is a good Spirit and some of those violent falls surely do not come from the good Spirit. Examples of those people who fell on their faces in the Bible is very different with what we see. HOLY SPIRIT help us.

Gresham,

I am glad you are studying on your own initiative and not believing what man tells you from the pulpit. All it takes is reading Scripture to realize that that being "slain in the spirit" is not the work of the Holy Spirit.
