What Is Heaven And Where Is It?

There are more than 20 different religions in the World. Not taking into account the smaller groups that have sprung up over the last few hundred years. But they all have one thing in common. Well nearly all of them. The all believe in a Heaven of some sort. Whatever they call it, it really does amount to the same thing. Without going into the actual religious beliefs it's a fact that thousands if not millions of people around the world pray to a Deity or Deities on a regular basis.Take Buddhism for example. Some believe in more than one God, others don't believe in it at all.

But the most fundamental question?

Where is Heaven?

Stairway to heaven www.jimwarren.com
Stairway to heaven www.jimwarren.com

Is God In All Of Us?

Before I start, I just thought I would mention the reason for this question. I was watching an old Star Trek film, yes bear with me! I think it was The Final Frontier if I remember right. And in it Spock's brother wanted to go through the barrier in Space because he believed that God was on the other side. Yes it turned out to be a nasty alien. But it did get me wondering.

Why do we always say Heaven? And why don't we question what it is? We all believe, as I do, that there is something out there. Some people believe in one God, others multiple Gods. But is that the same as Heaven? No I don't believe so.

Take God for starters. Is He or She an actual physical being? If so where does He live? If you believe in physics then maybe its some sort of atomic structure that makes up the Universe. But if that's so, then it would be easy to follow that with the fact that each and every atom is a part of God.

And as we are all made up of atoms, along with everything around us, does that not mean God is in us and the flowers and plants so to speak? If this is the case, then God and Heaven must be in our Dimension.

Is Heaven Another Planet?

Silly question I asked there, but is it? If God is in our Universe or dimension, then surely Heaven must be too. But we can't see God. Or Heaven. So does that make it physically part of our Universe somewhere far out in Space?

Its a real conundrum. Over the centuries we have become so programmed to believe in Heaven that the part of our brains that ask this question just gets pushed back into its little slot and we forget to ask the obvious question.

If Heaven is in fact another dimension, then how do we get there?

I remember watching a film a few years ago, that in a nutshell, was about our Souls shooting out into Space and landing on another Planet. Yes I know, another Sci Fi film.

But maybe that's what happens. Surely if that was the case then the Planet would be pretty full up by now. So many Souls over the Centuries. And who knows, maybe there are other beings sent there from different Planets. Now that's a thought!

There are also black holes in Space, a possible explanation for why they are there. We may shoot through the Singularity at the centre, and plop there we are!

Dimensions and Reincarnation.

Over the years Scientists have stated that there are multiple dimensions around us, and throughout Space. It makes much more sense to believe that we go to one of these. There is also the belief that the Earth has many mirror images out there too.

In each and every one of them we are there. We maybe a dancer, in another a top scientist. We are ourselves yet we are different. I would like to believe this is true. But proof of it is a different matter.

I recently got a a message on facebook from someone who wanted to show me a film on YouTube. We both have an interest in the unknown and psychic phenomenon.

In the film, a women who was being interviewed told a very startling story. Evidently she was near to death, after suffering an illness. As she was fading, she started to be able to hear her family speaking in a room along the corridor.

She also saw two of her relatives who had died. This near death experience also had a rather strange twist. Evidently she 'saw' herself living in these other dimensions or 'Times'. She said her experience had told her that everything is connected, and the other Past Lives were in fact occurring now. If we believe in reincarnation, then the 'you' who is living in the 16th Century for example is actually running parallel to our time!

All she felt was love. And when she woke up the doctors took tests to see why she had recovered. To their astonishment she was nearly cured! Of course being medical staff they had to come to the conclusion that they had misdiagnosed her at least 6 times! Take a look at the video and tell me what you think.

A Dream or Reality?

After my aunt died I had the strangest dream. I was aware that in life many years ago she loved playing tennis. But it wasn't something that had been on our minds over the years. But a few days after she passed, I dreamed that she was playing tennis with a friend. It wasn't like a normal dream.

In fact it was quite disturbing at the beginning. I was aware of her dying and then she suddenly appeared young and strong at the tennis court. She looked startled then started to laugh. Her companion, a man said, 'there you are, this is going to be game set and match for me'!

She laughed and said, 'This is wonderful'! And started playing. I then woke up. I burst out crying, not because I was sad, but because I felt she had gone home. Was it real? Maybe, I really hope so.

So What Is Heaven?

I am beginning to think that there is an explanation that we have just not thought of yet. It could be one of the above or something that incorporates them all. Maybe a little bit of all our faiths and then some.

What if when we eventually leave this mortal coil we transport to another one of 'us' in another dimension? Maybe our Souls reach for the sky and skip through layers of other Earths to find the one that we really want to go too. The other 'you' is there, but our Soul from this life just joins up with it somehow. And this goes on and on.

It would certainly explain reincarnation. And it would also give thought to multiple Universes.

Our Universe, God and all Infinity is a strange mysterious place. Maybe we are not meant to know what Heaven is. All I know Is:

I do believe in Heaven.

Such an interesting hub. Almost every religion believes in a special place were the dead go. Whether it's Heaven or ValHalla. How deep our faith in the after life will reflect how we regard it.

Beautiful and definitely gives one food for thought. I also do believe in heaven and even the concept of re-incarnation. I have had many a dream of others who have passed and had one in particular where my grandfather came to me after I had mentioned out loud that I just wished I could hug him one more time. In my dream, he did just that and when the hug was over, I woke feeling like I literally had just hugged him. So my experience there truly makes me believe in heaven and definitely a hereafter. Thanks for sharing and have of course voted up and shared too!!

Although I believe in reincarnation, I'm not sure why. I'm not willing to become a martyr for the sake of that belief. If a friend asks if I believe in transmigration, I must be honest, and say yes. However I don't have proof to back up that belief.

My intuition is that I had a 19th Century past life mostly in Victoria, although I had been born in Ireland. I was killed in one of the devastating Black Thursday Bushfires of 1851. Since the human death toll was relatively small in the then-sparsely-populated state of Victoria, it would be interesting to see if my intuition jibes with the available historical records.

About Heaven. There may be one or more gradations of these, but they are not necessarily eternal resting places. Heavens may be R & R for souls in transition, who have manifested an unusual amount of kindness and integrity in their immediate past lives, but who have not yet mastered everything that souls are supposed to learn in their serial incarnations.

Voted up and beautiful.

Nell, extremely interesting. I've often thought the same as you. However, the conditioning over the years is simply to say, "Have faith." I've often thought of one supreme being, appearing at different times to different lands, creating the segments that religion is made up of today. Yet, to be blunt, I have flatlined twice in my life, and saw nothing either time. No bright lights, no paths, no nothing. Others believe that religion is only a tool developed by the rich to keep the poor in line (if they don't follow the rules then Heaven cannot be theirs). I know I don't fear death, regardless of the consequences. Yet, I'd prefer to have a full enlightenment at a much later date. : ) Again, great job and interesting! Voted up & interesting!

Interesting hub Nell. As Peter Pan says 'to die will be an awfully big adventure', so all we can do really is buckle up and try to enjoy the ride. In my work as a spiritual medium, I have have never come across anyone in spirit who has said they don't like it on the other side, but however long you have been doing readings and working on the platform, I'm sure there is only a tiny corner of the curtain that has been twitched back to allow communication from spirit to grieving loved ones and that there are so many great mysteries still waiting to be explored.

Very interesting hub. I don't know the answer to the question in this hub. But, I have heard of people who have died and been brought back to life talking about going to Heaven or Hell. There are even videos about people who did not believe in God, who died and then came back to live and became Christians.

Voted up.

Who knows, Nell? You have written a wonderful Hub here. I do believe in Heaven because I believe in the Bible: pure and simple. Also, it gives me great comfort believing there is a Heaven, to think of being reunited by my loved ones (even my pets).

I voted this UP, etc.

Good morning, Nell - what a deep, thought provoking hub to go with my second cuppa coffee..

First, i love that you have 'risked' writing this because, it appears to me that hubpages is not the best venue for controversial pieces. i know this from my seemingly constant struggle with the hubpages powers that be - and most of my hubs are 'advertising disabled' due to 'adult content'. i also notice that 'hubs of the day' are VERY uncontroversial - almost to an extreme..

Now..back to the question at hand..(lol)..

I am not a person of faith - i have often wondered why and often envied those that are - but, i just am not..

i am spiritual and believe in the vast powers of the universe and nature - but i have no belief in heaven or hell - none..

i don't envision it as some garden of eden - i don't see it as a beautiful place to catch up with old friends and loved relatives..i don't see it full of chubby, happy, haloed angels..

i just don't see it at all..

Again, thanks for writing this and i am sharing with the hub-munity!

ps..LOVED your 'stairway to heaven'...gorgeous...

Nell, our faiths determine our beliefs. So, I do believe in rebirth and all that associated with it like heaven, hell, someone keeping our account of good vs bad deeds etc. And then God does not have a physical form in the truest sense. My faith tells me that God is physically present in each and every thing and still remains separate from his creation. Indeed difficult to comprehend. But then these things are not easy to understand as we do not see God or even heaven and hell.

It is a difficult subject to tackle and all conjectures depend on one's faith and leanings.

You have done a good job with such a difficult subject.

Voting it up and interesting.

Everybody's got their own idea of Heaven, depending on the hue of their beliefs. Some people see a brewery tour as Heaven, others see it with singing angels (possibly even Hill's Angels, with Ernie on his electric milk float), and many see it as pure, the land of milk and honey (yugh, what a mix)! Maybe it's where we get free Kit-Kat and Tea for all eternity, or where the landlord pours out free double measures of Famous Grouse? Or to Frenchmen it's a Burka-free zone.

So much of what she speaks of, have been thoughts and beliefs I have entertained at times and come to terms with by getting so much more in tuned to my spiritual self.

I can't thank you enough for this hub, Nell.....there are not enough descriptive choices.....I can vote this off the charts and describe it as enlightening and profoundly inspirational.....I feel a strange surge of hope and comfort......which may have reached beyond what your hub was intended to express!!!..........UP and shared!!

I think the universe is a holographic impression that we are pre-programmed to be attuned to, there are other dimensions we are not attuned to - just like radio stations. We only perceive what we are meant to perceive as being external which forms an internal visual map inside our minds which is what we 'think' we are seeing, hearing, etc.

This holographic impression is possibly being emitted from the 11th (highest) dimension where heaven may exist and this holographic impression crosses over into all the other dimensions manifesting what we call and regard as being physical matter, but this is only our perception of what exists and nothing more.

There was one recent case I read about where a non-religious doctor went into a coma and although the scans showed no brain activity during this period of coma (he woke up 7 days later) he explained that he had experienced what he could only refer to as Heaven and was turned into a believer - he felt comfortable, warm and sooth, he heard heavenly music coming from above and saw what he says was an angel. He had never believed before and had always put such phenomena down to "mind tricks".

Great Hub, Nell -- and I think most people have asked the same question at sometime in their life. After much musing on the subject (I'm also a fan of the paranormal, etc. and even have occasions of "knowing" which I try to avoid at all costs) I've come to the conclusions that I'll just go with a quote from the bible which says "faith is the hope of things unseen." Personally, going to heaven is high on my list of "want-to's" and I definitely believe in heaven -- I'm just not smart enough to come up with any answers to explain or describe it. Best/Sis

The answer to the question: "What is heaven?" is quite simple.

It's a human idea, like many others, created by minds unable to understand the limits to reality ... all these religious ideas, such as gods, angels, souls, etc. are all in the realm of human imagination, totally divorced from the real world based on what nature is and does.

People associate heaven with its "self-centered" definition and cannot go any further for fear of that mental heresy instilled from past generations. The concept can be deeper than thought before. We cannot see our creator because he is everywhere. We all have 5 or 7 senses, but having the mind of trillions at a fingertip can be hard to hold grip of. Maybe one day we will be able to put everything together spiritually and physically. Great read by the way! Above all I believe in a personal heaven, where we all will meet after playing our drama of life.

Hi Nell. Well we do know that Jesus told the man crucified along with him that he would be with him in Paradise in that day. So is paradise just an alternate dimension? We also know that Jesus told his own apostles that he would go an prepare a place for them in his Fathers house which clearly meant Heaven. Plus he told them that flesh would not accend into heaven so their bodies would be left behind unless hidden by God. Now that Peter states that some will be taken in the twinkle of an eye and transported as not to even see death. Revelations tells of the selection from the TRIBES which are sons of Israel and includes Menassah son of Joseph born to him and his Egyptian wife. These will rule with Jesus from Heaven. Yes a ruler must have a Kingdom or something to rule over, hence Paradise. Land of the faithful.

Nell, This is certainly thought provoking. There is much that I don't believe. I believe in God, a higher power, but to believe in all that is spewed from the pulpits, I would have to hate, and I refuse to exclude those who choose a life style that's different than mine. I leave judgement up to God. There are so many different beliefs, some say that heavesn will be here on earth afrer the judgement, some believe it is in the sky. I do not believe in a fiery pit. I choose to believe that all people who love and do the best they can will live again, whether that's through incarnation or what ever. I guess we all will find out someday, until then, love is the key...Cheers..

Great article! I love your ending. I, too, believe in heaven. May be it is not so much a place as a rhelm. I don't know what the destination is but, it is a comforting thought that there is something out there after death. I have found places here on earth that are 'heaven on earth to me.' Most involve nature - the beach and Gulf of Mexico, the Tyrolean Alps. My heaven is a beautiful place in nature. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this and I find it so interesting that many times I think the things you do, but you have the courage to just write about it! That's what I like about you Nell.

A very interesting read! The one thing I do know is that the older I get the less I know about the things I thought I knew a lot about. So, instead of trying to figure it all out I've learned to trust that there's a purpose in all of this, including the pain, hardship, terror, and love we all experience. Some day we may understand, but for now why not just trust that it will take us where we need to be. For me this trust takes away any fear about what is to come. In my mind there's nothing worse than living in fear of the unknown.

Some interesting speculations in a very good article, Nell. Your dimension skipping souls into waiting bodies is a new one and really intriguing; high level pondering there Nell. Aren't we human beings just microcosms in a macrocosm after all. You know, 'cause everything that exists in the universe also exists in the human, like you pointed out with the atoms. The dimensions within us must be endless. Perhaps we contain all dimensions within and at the same time transcend all dimensions. The spirit is the wonder of wonders isn't it.

What value is there in having a rational mind if one gets depressed just over the fact that a lot of things don't exist in the real world?

One has to learn how to mature and not cry at some point in ones life that St. Nick was never real!

Why people don't want to learn how to be realistic instead of fooling themselves because it makes them feel better, is not clear to me at all.

I'd much rather learn how to live with the real answer than go on hoping for some god to come and do things for me because I'm still fast asleep following the american dream ... ahahahaha :)

Hi Nell,

Nice to be back to read one of the most interesting hubs of yours. Great job Nell! I do believe in God but am not sure of the concept of heaven and hell.

But I am very sure of something -that we can create heaven on earth by making a difference in the life of people around us thereby helping to better the world. All the same, this has been one great hub, very well-written Nell and your efforts in writing this are greatly appreciated. Sharing all over the place. Cheers, Rema.

Hi rema, thanks so much, and yes you are right. making a difference to people and the world is so important, much more than what we actually believe in, thanks, nell

There was a point in my past where I went through a religious phase. To date, however, my life experiences and research have made me an atheist. I most especially do not believe in any formal, organized religions, of any stripe. I go with the Pagan philosophy of, "Do as ye will, nay harm ye none."

I do not believe in any deities, nor in evil entities in the hereafter. I do, however, believe that our energy force, which is essentially electricity, continues on in the space-time continuum. I do not think there is any such thing as "heaven;" it is not a physical place, but whatever comes in the afterlife is different for each person, and is a place of the mind and the energy. My father's "mind space," for example, is likely to be full of machine shops. My mothers, of beautiful bulb gardens. It is our "home" space between lives on earth.

As far as "gods," for all I know, we may have been planted here by aliens as an experiment. ;-)

I think we just need to focus on the here and now, and not worry overmuch about what comes after, since there is nothing we can do about it.

Carpe Diem!

HI Lizzy, yep totally agree with you! I do believe in the life force and the power of the universe, atoms etc, but Heaven I am not sure about. Part of me wants to believe there is something after this, but most of me doubts it, if that were possible why don't we get messages from them? I know people say they do, but I think that's psychological, what do you think? thanks as always, nell

Hi, Nell,

I agree, a lot of it is wishful thinking, etc. However, I do think there is SOME kind of continuation of our energy force... how else do you explain ghosts?

Sure, people can be "guilty" of wishful thinking and pattern matrixing of light and shadow... but not cats and dogs. We do have a spirit in our house, and there are times when we might not notice, but all of a sudden, all of the cats will snap to attention and stare down the hall, at apparently nothing at all....and there was not any noise, or shadow or light play involved... And, there are times when we definitely know she is present... she has, a few times, gone right through my husband.... he says that is a very strange and uncomfortable feeling.

You can read all about it on my blog: http://straythoughtsonaleash.blogspot.com/2011/01/...

;-)

Hello Nell Rose,

I came across your hub. I enjoyed it immensely. You really summed it up when you said, "Our Universe, God and all Infinity is a strange mysterious place. Maybe we are not meant to know what Heaven is. All I know Is: I do believe in Heaven."

This is truth, though let me explain it my own words.

Our view of Earth is manifested through the unique actions and thoughts of ALL the people living here, and we call this The World. The really mysterious thing is that we share the same planet with billions of others and yet we still manage to live in our own private world. i.e. my perceptions and beliefs about things are going to be different than the next guys.

Well heaven is going to be the same essentially. Since my profound joys are inspired through music, I would say this is MY heaven. And better yet, miraculously, I have the power to share my heaven with the rest of my fellow beings here on earth and spread joy...

Heaven on Earth so to speak...

So though we can never FULLY grasp heaven since there are SOOO many, we should be glad, for the mystery gets to continue and fill us up with more, and more joys, the more we share ours with others.

Variety is the spice of life.

Enjoy your Journey

By the time I scrolled down to the end of this page, Nell, I felt like I had reached heaven which is a perfect segue way to say that every time I am in the presence of a hub legend like you I feel like I am in hub heaven.

Personally though I think heaven and hell is all in our minds and it's what we make of it. Heaven and hell is currently with us here on earth and it's also the choices for each one of us when we are alive.

I would make the most of my time now (which is why I am here with you tonight Lady Nell) because I sure as heck don't know what's beyond this life.

Maybe there 'is' a Hub heaven but it surely can't get any better than spending some time here with you tonight.

Sending warm wishes from lake erie time ontario canada 9:29pm

Hi Colin, I am reading the old testament at the moment, partly religious but mainly for historical reasons, never read it before properly, and I think that what they meant by heaven was purely the sky and the stars, that's how it sounds to me, how it became more than that is anybodies guess, just got to jacobs ladder now! lol! talk about heavy going, phew! thanks so much for your kind words, and its always great to see you too, from bucks in England, cold snowy and downright miserable weather, at 12.13 am! lol!

Beautiful facts, and I agree Nell.

Heaven could be just a place where souls get to connect with each other. Those souls who have lost their physical bodies. It could be a state of illusion for a man on earth but, a reality for the souls actually existing.

I too believe in heaven. that story narrated by the author, Anita was mindblowing. It is as if her soul departs and comes back again in the same body.

Hi Doc, thanks so much, yes I think there are many ways to interpret Heaven, maybe each and every one is right, or maybe we haven't seen the real picture yet, thanks, nell

Is it possible we create our own collective heaven or hell through the power of the collective consciousness? Perhaps what you believe in becomes reality after you die.

Another hub that creates beautiful thoughts and makes people think. I believe when we do something right it is our heaven on earth happening and creating right before our eyes.Which is only a microscopic view of what comes next. loved your you tube tie in Dying to be me. Thank you for sharing.

Very interesting hub Nell, I believe in heaven and hope to be greeted by it when I die but I see that if heaven is truly heaven then it will look like you think it should look like, therefore heaven would look different to everyone. As to where it is I believe that it is in the highest dimension, which is where our mental self goes after death and your mental self goes to either heaven, limbo or he'll.

Hi Skul, thanks for reading, yes its fascinating to wonder where it actually is, or indeed if it really does exist, good points, thanks

The idea of God and heaven has been spread throughout many religions since the beginning ... so has the truth, but it has been distorted in all religions except the Judeo/ Christian religion. If you want a more concise idea of who God is and what He is like, look at Jesus. If you want a more trustworthy account of heaven, look to the Bible. God has prepared "many mansions" for His believers, those who put their FAITH IN JESUS! Revelation chapters 21 & 22 describe it, yet we can only imagine it dimly. It is a spiritual location, more real and brilliant than our reality.

A couple very special children claim that they have been there. In the movie Heaven is For Real" a small boy visits while in a comma. He describes its beauty and meeting Jesus and others who have passed on. His confirmation of what Jesus looks like happened when his father showed him a painting painted by an 8-year old prodigy artist, Akiane Kramarik; who began to have visions of heaven when she was four years old and started painting. Her parents were atheists btw. Check out her site under her first name.
