Prey's Question

The esteemed HubPages author, Prey, asked the question,

"What defines a Demon?"

And how do they become this persona? Or are they born this way? Is there a common denominator with all Demons? Are they all bad or good, possibly are there both? Have you ever met one?"

You may find Prey here: http://hubpages.com/profile/prey

The following is my answer to the question asked.

Do you believe?

Do demons exist?

The following is my answer to the question asked.

While I have read the other two answers to this question, I do not personally agree and will attempt here to broaden the definition of a demon.

First, I do not feel the term is limited to supernatural beings exclusively. If a person’s soul can leave this plane of existence and become an angel, who is to say that a person’s soul could not leave and become a demon? If a person’s soul can become an angel through grace, could not a person’s soul become a demon through lack of grace or through the compilation of ongoing, exceedingly bad deeds that said person never repented nor felt sorry for having done? If we accept the framework of thepreceding questions, then the next logical step, in my mind, is that some angels begin becoming angels in this plane of existence and therefore the same could be said of demons.

Obviously, a demon can already exist in hell in supernatural form.

But let us center this theoretical discourse on the assumption that some, at least, begin their journey into the demonic in this plane of existence. What might such an entity look like… or more accurately be like? I can’t say for sure, but to me, said individual would be the kind of soul that enjoys causing pain in others. Examples of such twisted individuals would include serial killers, child molesters, peddlers of human flesh other than their own for pure profit, sadists, serial rapists, bullies of the extreme variety and possibly other less apparently insidious types such as corporate employed big wigs who rob the masses of their life savings, (can you say Enron?) types that knowingly destroy the planet and pollute things like land near water supplies and playgrounds with no thought or care to the effects it will have on others. You get the idea.

Are demons born, made or achieved through choice?

As to the next part of your question, “are they born this way or how do they become this persona”, in my opinion, they are not born this way. Somehow, through a combination of experiences and choices people wind up good or bad in nature. That is not to say one can’t change. A person who has been terribly cruel can awaken one day and change. If we look at cases of severe abuse we often see people who grow up to be abusers which would lend some credence to the idea of nurture over nature in relation to the question posed. I wonder if a good follow up question would not be why some people having gone through the most horrid abuse chose to be kind and loving and others chose to continue the cycle of abuse. The key word in the preceding is of course “choice”. For in the end that is what life is for us all… a series of choices. Each choice made defines the options available for the next choice eliminating some and creating others.

As for the later part of your question “are they good or bad or possibly both and have you ever met one", in my opinion, I can only say that while on this plane of existence I don’t think anyone exists in a pure state of good or bad but some combination of both although said combination may be seriously slanted in one direction or the other. In another plane of existence, i.e. hell, I think the demon persona would have to be pure bad. Obviously the aforementioned is theory as I have not personally been to hell or another plane.

For the last question, “have you ever met one”, I can only say it depends on your definition. If you mean a pure demon from or in hell, I don’t know as I doubt I would recognize such an entity but merely think it to be a very bad human. If you accept my theory of “baby demons” in human form before ascension, then yes, I have met several.

a demon to me would be any living or non living being that has embraced evil to the point of being unredeemable. as a wiccan, I believe in the duality of the universe, good and evil there is never one without the other with the exception of a demon....there is nothing which is good...the balance would be the being which has no evil, such as Jesus...both are very rare.

Bluetiger - Thank you :). And thanks for stopping by.

Chuck - I like the definition you have put forth. I agree about the combination of good and evil being found in most things and about the rarity of pure good being found. I can't agree about the rarety of evil sadly, but then this is just my opinion.

WICCA, I find, to be fascinating. Further, it is interesting to think of just how many tenants of the "older" religions are found in Christianity... and other elements such as important dates, concepts and themes... solstices, the Jack O The Green... well, I am sure you would know more of this than I would.

Thanks bunches for reading.

Most demons, according to their pomposity, are easily seen in the halls of congress. They hold many government positions! Many of them work for the DMZ!

Micky, I do lover to read your comments and this one has to rate at the top of the list! Too funny and more to the point... too true!

I agree completely. You've done an excellent and eloquent job of exploring that question and (for once!) I have nothing to add. Great job Vix (or do you prefer Rhonda?)

And you've inspired (motivated?) me to share a piece from my file labeled Really Poor Poetry called Demons Among Us. I feel it illustreates the personal struggle you describe. I won't hog up your comment space though; the hub will be up in a short bit. Thanks for a great read!

Rats! That's been put on the web, so I can't use it here or The Powers That Be will slap me around (again).

Thank you so much Allen for your comments. Your words have truly made me feel good.

I much prefer being addressed as Vix, but honestly, either is fine. I am off to your poem... can't wait to read. :)

Allen - Wow! Your poems on the demon is obviously well done, but what I am focused on now, (forgive me I just woke up so my mind is racing about) is the fact that for some reason it reminds me of political heros. I think it may be the one face presented publically that is thought of in a positive light and the other face coming out when the demon is alone being so dark, so not positive.

Thank you very much for sharing.

I don't understand why you can't post it here too. It's your work. But then I am afraid I don't know all the rules yet.

You learn the rules quickly when you start breaking a few! Seriously though, duplicate content is not allowed here, even if it is your own work. The content filter doesn't know that. It also doesn't know how to distinguish copied content from a direct quote. My latest 'slapping about' resulted from using a couple of direct quites that also appeared on several major news services.

Demons Among Us was written in response to a rash of reports (long ago) on child molesting priests, but it is vague enough that it could be applied to politicians, sports heros, movie stars, or most anyone who leads a split-personality life style. And in some small way. most of us are not as clear-cut as we like to think. We all have a little bit of a dark side in us that we may, at times, struggle with.

Allen, thanks for the tip about posting your own stuff. I had no idea. Don't say I get it or agree with it but o.k.

Yes, we all have some dark in us at least at times. I think perhaps it is needed to help us fight through the hard times in life.

I feel the problems arise when people don't or can't control that part of themselves.

I hate to hear about "child molesting priests".

The very idea of it is just so wrong on so many levels. Of course there is the physical and emtional vilolation of a child which, forgive me, I think the death penalty should be implemented for. Further, there is a violation of personal and public trust not to mention using God, in a way, to hurt others. I think its just the lowest of the low as far as abhorent behavior goes. I have a hub on Child Abuse with a poem about a very simular situation but honestly, I don't go to it hardly ever since I posed it. It's too depressing.

It is a philosophical question really I suppose Muse. Evil is a missused word and often missunderstood eh? Evil comes from smiles and frowns alike. I would pen true evil as one that has no remorse for others, like a robot. Cool sophism Muse. KEEP EM COMING! Matt.

Thanks bunches for stopping by and reading Matt. "Evil comes from smiles and frowns alike". I like this as it is very true. I think the smiles are more dangerous myself. Take care of you Inky.

..demons? aren't they in politics??

..yes the epigram-vamp has arisen again for a pee break - yes even vampires have to get up and relieve themselves - and I like to keep my coffin clean ......well here comes that fiery ball over the lake here in the east sky so I better go - but demons? well no doubt there are a few lurking around here at the pages of hub - and remember most demons reside in our head and have two feet!

Absorbing hub - and very provocative!

Epigram Vamp - Ah, it pleases me so that you would stop by this little page. I have to agree that more demons walk on two legs than not.

Hmmm, I thank you for the warning as I was not aware so many were lurking w/in the Hub... I shall keep it in mind.

Thank you for your kind words and I wish you the most darkly pleasant of dreams during your slumber.

I do not want associated with the demon in any form. But I can easily found the demon inside the human soul. This trigger a lot of corruption, criminal and war. Thank you very much for showing about this. ~prasetio

Thank you for reading and commenting Prasetio. I agree with your desire to not associate w/ demons as well as your thoughts that it can be found in the human soul.

I wonder, if demons originate from humans and the net originated from the same humans, will the net have it's own demons? Just a thought.

This was very interesting hub,I never thought of demons living in human form, but this last year I met a very corrupt soul.. He has been a sink hole of corruption that sucks all into very low depths, that happen to walk his paths.. Many have figured out his motives, and cast him away as a friend... The strangest thing is that he claims to be so lonely and that not many understand him? I wonder if this makes him innocent to his motives, or a weird ploy to lure those back as friends, and tricks them to make others believe he is harmless.. He is the only one I would ever believe and to have any trace of demonic soul, he is certainly evil for sure..

Artfux - I am very sorry to hear you have encountered such a soul in the real world. I have found that when brushing against such, for me, the only thing that can be done is total removal from your life. I hope you emerged from such an encounter unscathed.

Thank you for stopping by and reading.

Demon see, Demon do, mess with a Demon, your soul will be forfeit, stained with sin, far as the definition of a Demon, it stares back as my reflection, hahahaha, good read...

MrDSpade2 ~ Greetings sir. Thank you for your visit and your kind words. While I do enjoy the demonic tone of your writes, I can never believe you to be a demon yourself... too much heart.
