What if God Was One of Us

What if God was one of us? In the movie Bruce Almighty, Morgan Freeman is delightful as God and also is the homeless dude holding up cardboard signs throughout the film. The homeless guy morphs into Morgan in the last few frames--making the point I guess, that God might be anyone and just might be the one you are least likely to expect him to portray.

I think if God was one of us, He would be a little pissed at having to put up with our constant bickering and complaining. Maybe He would let drop a few bombshells about what we were really thinking. If he was the homeless woman with a shopping cart asking if you could help her out and you said: "No." It would be great if He said "Well what about the fifty dollars you were going to spend on a fresh brand of sunglasses? Or the hundred you were saving folded in your wallet?" I would love to see that unless I was the one holding out, of course.

If He was a contestant on the Iron Chef competition, I could just hear the moderator: "I can't believe it, our new chef just made ten new original dishes and enough servings to feed the whole television audience using only five biscuits and three sardines and cooked them without using any heat or implements. I think we have a winner!"

Or if he was janitor on Scrubs and walking by the ER he hears "We've lost him, time of death--no wait, look his heart is beating, and the cancer's gone and who let those doves in here?"

Maybe you are talking to your little brother whom you hate because he never gets into trouble and you are always being yelled at for little things like roasting the dog's tail in the campfire or using your Mom's bra for a kite--and anyway your brother says "Maury, I hate to break it to you but I'm God." For a split second you begin to wonder about that time he was in the middle of the street and a semi was coming right at him and he just seemed to appear on the other side of the street or when Mrs. Baker asked everyone in Sunday School if they knew all the Hebrew names of Jehovah and he raised his hand--but then common sense returned and you boxed his ears for being such a smart a@%.

What if the guy who lived in a cardboard box near the train tracks was God and when you always passed by looking the other way while he was smiling and waving to you, you hurt his feelings because he was just trying to talk to you and tell you that he was really proud of you even though you did take that five dollars out of the offering plate that time.

If God had a name, what would it be
And would you call it to his face
If you were faced with him in all his glory
What would you ask if you had just one question

And yeah yeah God is great yeah yeah God is good
yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah

What if God was one of us
Just a slob like one of us
Just a stranger on the bus
Trying to make his way home

If God had a face what would it look like
And would you want to see
If seeing meant that you would have to believe
In things like heaven and in jesus and the saints and all the prophets

And yeah yeah God is great yeah yeah God is good
yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah ~ Eric Bazilian

Sorry to break it to you Winsome, but I am God and I have just now decided that you shall be a great writer, become rich, famous and grateful to me for the favour I have deigned to bestow on you. So if you ever meet me, make sure you buy me lunch and do not skimp on the accompanying drinks, else I might just change my mind.

How are you, Winsome child. This is the voice of God writing to you. How do I know I am the voice? de Greek told me so.

What a fun hub this was to read, and at the same time, with a serious message. Yes, God may be in every one of us. If we believe it, then it is so.

Lol, DG how could I refuse--one cannot take chances with such a request. After all Jesus said: "If you do it to the least of these, my brothers, you do it unto me." The meal and drinks are on me and if we run out you can do that thing you do with the water. =:)

Ha ha Doc, as I said to DG, who could argue? I like the way John the Beloved described it: "So the Word became human and made his home among us. He was full of unfailing love and faithfulness. And we have seen his glory, the glory of the Father's one and only Son." ~ John 1:14

This hub is meant to see God's humor as well as be a slightly irreverent wondering of what we would do if we were the generation for the incarnation to appear--who among us would he be and would we have our own version of the cross ready for him? Thank you for your take on it. =:)

Beautiful, inspirational and fun hub. Wow!! I really enjoyed your view. I tried to get this concept across to my Confirmation CCD classes during one of their final lessons. Hey JB, Yeah, I thought it was Sheryl Crow (who does have a cover of it) but Joan Osborne is the one who had the hit in 1995 which was nominated for Song of the Year and she sang another version for the theme of Joan of Arcadia.

winsome- my cable being out recently, i watched bruce almighty for the minionth time. i like how morgan freeman portrays god, and if i found out that that was what god was like, id be exceedingly happy! Anyway, The thought of god going incognito inside a homless woman, or a guy that just needs some bus fare, does not appeal to me. Because i dont think you should do anything just in case your "being watched" I like the idea of us putting ourselved in someone elses shoes. Like, what if your car broke down, and you needed to use someones cell phone, you would want help, wouldn't you? Karma baby! Im sorry if i downed the whole vibe you were going for here, just putting my 2 cents in. love your hub as always!

Hi winsome. hey pal, thanks for this beautiful hub. Yeah God is among us, but if I may also get a little bit deep in here, if you wont mind.: God does not only exist in us, humans, God is also in the animals, the trees, the mountains and every thing that is inherently natural, is God and is inhabited by God. the totality of everthing, naturally inherent, is God. That is perhaps my view that we should not destroy nor adulterate anything that is God's image. Thanks winsome, hope you'll visit my hubs too.

Winsome profile image

Winsome 6 years ago from Southern California by way of Texas Author

Hey Pink, thank you for the thoughtful comment. I think the idea of God being one of us is just that--instead of a God who does not relate, I think he chose to become one of us so that whatever we go through, whether it be someone disappointing us or being alone or misunderstood or ridiculed, he would be able to identify with us since he experienced the same things. Glad to see you as always. =:)

Hi winsome, It just so happens that a homeless guy approached me a few days ago at a conveinance store. Because I am so kind-hearted, I always try to give these people something but that day I was having a bad day and just wanted to be left alone. So when he ask me for money, I told him I didn't have any. As soon as I walked away, I felt really guilty. As I was standing in the line waiting to purchase my $1.29 mountain dew and 1.00 ice cream bar, the guilt took over and I knew I would have to give him something. When I walked out and gave him the money and saw his smile, I knew I had done the right thing and felt so much better. True, he might have went straight to the liquor store but it didn't matter, I had done what I thought I should. I absolutely loved this hub! I believe that God is always watching us in everything we do! :)

Winsome profile image

Winsome 6 years ago from Southern California by way of Texas Author

Hi RS, I didn't mean to add to the collective guilt about homeless people, but I just think it's funny how we humans are and imagining God interacting with us in these situations was too interesting to pass up. There is a very amusing incident in Numbers 22:22-35 of God allowing a donkey to talk to his master who was beating him. I'm glad you enjoyed the hub. Thank you for stopping by.

What a great read, both delightful and provocative.

After reading your words and those of all the commenters, I came away thinking that it is as arrogant to assert--or assume--that God is not one of us, or even all of us, as it is to assume that any one thing can be known completely.

Winsome profile image

Winsome 6 years ago from Southern California by way of Texas Author

Thank you Sally, you are right, our arms are too short to box with God and our minds too small to comprehend him. The wonder for me is that he wants to be with us. That tells me a lot about him and a lot about us. Nice to have you stop by the porch and sit a bit. Come back soon. =:)

Hi Winsome - Your approach is fun and serious both. I've wondered about what god would look like myself, but only to myself and I often just think that whatever we believe unconditional love and energy look like, then that is God. I think he made us human so that we would give each other 3 seconds to judge each other with a first impression, though. Which means, that I think he looks like ice cream. Thumbs up!

Winsome profile image

Winsome 6 years ago from Southern California by way of Texas Author

Ha ha MW, 3 second impression and ice cream--if that were true I would have a lot of him in me. Seriously, your description of unconditional love is one of the best yet. The famous football stadium signs--John 3:16 represent a verse which is an amazing story of a God who loved the world he created so much that he became one of us and took the heat for our screw-ups. That is pretty cool and sweet--just like ice cream. =:) Thank you so much for a fun and meaningful comment.

How to add what you and your commentators have posted here? Do I need to add to what has already been so eloquently said? I am intriged by the many ways we cn say the same thing. I like that we each can describe God in different ways. That each way has meaning that is true for the writer. God seems to appeal to each of us in a way that is unique to each of us. In the movie didn't each representation that God took on show an aspect of who God is? Perhaps I should be, but I am not concerned that the bag lady may be God keeping an eye on me. Rather God in the bag lady is my chance to accept or deny the knowledge that my contact with each individual I meet is another personal contact opportunity with God.

Winsome profile image

Winsome 6 years ago from Southern California by way of Texas Author

And I can't improve on that. =:) Thank you David for an eloquent addition to an intriguing situation.

I love the song and the series based on it- Joan of Arcadia. I think the point is not that God *IS* in everyone of us, but rather that He is everywhere, and wanting a relationship with you. It makes you stop and think about the person you ignored because they weren't in your *class* or you thought you were better than them. Or how about the time you yelled at someone you loved- just because you were frustrated? It should make you stop and pause and remember to live each moments in its fullest, because at one point, God was one of us, and HE is still around. Love the hub, inspiration and reminder. You are a great writer!!

Peace*

Winsome profile image

Winsome 6 years ago from Southern California by way of Texas Author

Hey UB, thank you for your very eloquent and spot-on comment and for your kind words. I agree, it's not for us to decide how God manifests himself but when he says (loose translation) "When you do something for the least of us, you are encountering me" I don't understand it I just conjecture about it in this hub so that it becomes food for thought and just as you said, hopefully for positive action. Thank you for stopping by. =:)

Interesting Read - What if God was one of us? Hmmm... Winsome don't get me started. lol

People in the world complain about everything. So many issues - social, religious, political - even Presidents can do no right. If God came down, some would honour him and some would complain at Him.

Great Hub. :)

Winsome profile image

Winsome 6 years ago from Southern California by way of Texas Author

Ha ha Elena, thank you for the comment and I do want to get you started. Bruce in the movie complained until he had part of God's responsibilities for a while and then he was just relieved to be himself with what he had and appreciated other people more. If they weren't a gagillion sizes too big it might be a good idea for everyone to walk a mile in God's shoes. =:)

brotheryochanan profile image

brotheryochanan 6 years ago from BC, canada

Chances are that god is not going to be one of us, as he is bound to duties in heaven and scheduled for an earthly comeback and nothing prior. But what UniqueBeauty said, "god is everywhere and wants a relationship with us". Perhaps that probing sensation to do right is gods holy spirit asking you to help this man, but you were to busy singing the theme song to a movie you were watching last night. Or perhaps god wanted to say something but you just didn't believe in god and thought that nice thought in your head was idiocy. This is why we all need to be spiritually awake, born again and listening for gods voice.

Winsome profile image

Winsome 6 years ago from Southern California by way of Texas Author

Thank you for your comment BY, I believe that a God who can hold the universe together and cares about the birds of the air and knows the (decreasing) numbers of my hair is available when I call and holds me when I fall whether he has business in heaven or not. I also believe that the one who has protected this fragile planet and its careless occupants can take care of his word in spite of what its so called human guardians of translations decide. Who knows, maybe the internet will birth his best translation yet as those who listen to him talk to each other. I include here a quote from the last book of the Old Testament from the KJV you prefer: "Then they that feared the LORD spake often one to another: and the LORD hearkened, and heard it, and a book of remembrance was written before him for them that feared the LORD, and that thought upon his name." ~ Malachi 3:16

Yes I think we should listen and speak often to each other and encourage each other--God is taking notes. =:)

Just like the Samaritan story in the bible that whatever we do to others, it is like we also do it unto Him. This is a thought provoking hub that we really never know if God is one of us. But I believe that we can feel His presence through our personal relationship with Him. We only have to take time and listen. Have a great week!

Winsome profile image

Winsome 6 years ago from Southern California by way of Texas Author

Hi Tina, good to see you and hear your affirming words--the more I think about it the more I think that even though God is so much more than we can imagine, he has chosen to be known as the God who is with us. Our careless treatment of others causes him pain and we cannot bypass that any more than we can separate the damage we do to our hand from our body. Scratch even a finger and the whole body feels it. The person next to you on the bus is probably not God, but prick him and God bleeds or wish him a good week (like you did for me) and God smiles. =:)

Another great hub.

I think it was in an episode of "House" when a patient was asked if he believed that Jesus was the Son of God, "Yes" he replied, "And so am I!"

Took the words right out of my mouth...had to swab with a modicum of spirits...swallowed.

I have loved the song since I heard Ms. Osborne sing it, and try not to forget the message as I daily participate in life.

Of course God is in us all...no one else could entertain him like we do.

Hey Chris, that's funny--"Of course God is in us all...no one else could entertain him like we do."

I think sometimes the God in all of us is like a super accurate, super efficient, super polite GPS--we are going madly off in the wrong direction and instead of a sarcastic voice that asks "What part of take the next right didn't you understand?" he just waits for it to dawn on us the directions are always right there. Awesome, I always loved this song, and always ask the same questions. I think about that every time I encounter another person. Especially last year when a homeless elderly couple were sitting in a car in the middle of the winter. I could have said no I wouldn't help you, but I gave them enough to get a room at a hotel for that night. I think you have to always think about this in certain situations. When we judge, discriminate, or be prejudice against someone for anything how do we know if it could be God?

Hey Kelli, wasn't that a fun hub with all those comments and musings from some of the best in HP? I re-read the comments and saw I had written: "I have to have the laughs so the big thoughts don't hurt my brain." So true. ha ha

It is fun having you comment because you think the big thoughts too--yes, respect is perhaps the fundamental key to relationships. Once respect goes, so goes the relationship. I think a big part of respect is to appreciate and accept the differences we have and I sometimes think that approval is a more romantic word than love.

Thank you Kelli, it is a pleasure writing with you. =:)

I've never thought of romance that way, but now that you say it, it makes a lot of sense! It's a pleasure writing with you too =)

Good hub. Good reminder. Reminds me of the parable of the sheep and the goats
