"Why Do People Wear Crosses And Crucifixes; When They Don't Know The Implications Of What It Means"

We don't have to wear a cross to be close to God or to honor God.
We don't have to wear a cross to be close to God or to honor God.

"Why Do People Wear Crosses And Crucifixes : When They Don't Know The Implications Of What It Means "

Deuteronomy chapter 5 - 8 ; Thou Shalt not make any graven image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath,or that is in the water beneath the earth This is one of Gods tenth commandments, yet we make pictures of God and Jesus, angels and everything else we want to draw, but how can we make picture of God, Jesus and angels, when none of us have ever seen them, in fact the bible states we cannot look at God and live, so is it okay to draw our own God, Jesus and female angels? We even make crosses of all colors, sterling silver, or 14 KT. gold, wear them like they are a trophy, to be proud of. When we wear that cross around our neck, we're hanging a big burden around our neck that's to heavy for us to carry. Jesus already died on the cross for us, so we wouldn't have too, so why are we doing it.The simplest reason I came up with is : some of us think it's an honor to wear it, and others it's being close to God. I want you to know that it's neither. when I was seventeen, I was given my first sterling silver cross, boy!, I thought it was such a glorious honor to wear it, and I wore it with pride, I later learned that to wear a cross of any kind was putting a burden around my neck; that I wouldn't be able to uphold.

Just think about it, this cross that you hold dear, was a detriment to Jesus, but a blessing to mankind, but I want you to imagine that one of your children got killed with a nine millimeter, would you wear the same nine millimeter around your neck as evidence that it actually happen, I don't think so. We don't have to wear a cross to recognize the fact, that our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, Died on a wooden cross for you and I, so we wouldn't have too. All we have to do is accept Jesus, get baptised and live our lives according to the word of God. To be honest, wearing a cross or a crucifix doesn't do anything for us, and to be honest, I think it desecrates a sacred thing that Jesus die for us, by dying in our stead. So before you hang a cross around your neck, make sure you know the implications of doing so. when Jesus said to take up your cross and follow me, he didn't mean a wooden cross, or a silver or gold cross, he meant your burdens, your trials and tribulations and follow him, because he the only one that can take care of the problems that we face.

As always creativeone a very interesting hub indeed. I myself do not and have not worn a cross around my neck. But i have honestly never though about it in the way you have. I believe that it is between the wearer and God really. If we are walking close with Him i believe that He will show us if He does not like the things we do. Great read.......

Love and Hugs

if a gun brought forth my salvation...yes I would wear it around my neck. A crucifix with the corpus of Christ doesn't 'remind' me that Jesus 'closed his eyes and died for the forgiveness of our sins'....it screams at me that Jesus died a horrible and excruciating (which is a word that derives from the pain of crucifixion) death on a cross because he loved us.

Without the Cross, there is no crown. If you keep things in your minds and hearts...the reality is confined. To put a cross in one's home, around one's neck...it reinforces to us our faith...whenever our eyes gaze upon the image.

The reference to graven images--we must also remember the time in which this was instructed...what nations considered 'gods' and how they worshipped. Reference to the Egyptian gods. The construction of the Ark of the covenant was dictated by God...and we see the construction of the image of two angels. Which are of the heavens.

We are not to worship a cross, nor the image of it...because it is not God. And honestly if anyone finds them falling into this sin...then of course, they shoud avoid images of these sorts so they do not worship them.

God bless.

Thank you so much Sofia, for your visit and comment. I did read in the bible where we aren't suppose to make things in his likeness, and I think that means crosses too. But I appreciate you and your opinion. God bless you. creativeone59

Your truth, as you see it, is beautiful. I feel each of us has a perspective on what it means. Like Fred Allen, our Lord knows our true feelings.....the crucifix just represents our love for him.

In Christ,

Sofia

The actual cross was most probably different from the "small t" that is the symbol of THE cross. The Romans had perfected the "craft" of hanging people by the cross. The pole was probably always there. The top horizontal piece was most probably removable and the top piece is probably what Jesus bore on his way to Golgotha.

Great hub Creativeone,

I agree basically with FA. It is really the meaning people give to it, other than that it is just some form or plastic or metal. For many, it is simple jewelry. For others, who knows. I appreciate the points you brought out as it inspires us to contemplate our stance and what meaning it have for us individually as believers.

Thanks for the stimulation. Love, peace, joy always!

Forever His,

I often wondered why people don't wear an ornament in the shape of a tomb with the stone rolled away. That makes more sense to me. Thanks for speaking out!

Good hub. You don't hear this point of view much in the Christian circles--although I have friends who don't wear crosses for this reason.

Good exposition on why we should not wear a cross. I do, however believe that since God knows our hearts and motives that many who do still find favor with Him. Some wear it as a reminder of the great price that was paid for us to be made right with God. They do so solemnly and with the greatest of reverence. I'm sure that many have had opportunity to reach out to lost souls as a result of a conversation started over a comment initiated by a cross they were wearing. It is a reminder of what God thinks about sin. If it becomes an object of worship it becomes sin. I hope you don't mind me bringing this into the discussion. I just feel that God looks at the heart, not the jewelry. You are a dear sweet soul and I respect your view.

I used to wear a purple cross before, but I lost it after my wedding day. I married to a minister who serve in prophetic ministry. And I know in my heart that the cross is merely for decoration because I like its purple color. When we sat on the train of buses, traveling from one place to the other. I came across many like to wear cross either as a pair of earrings, locket, or as a bookmark. All these merely decoration or trying to worship an image WHERE GOD WANT TO LIVE Inside us, He want to dwell in us, We shall be clear that Jesus must be always in our heart. HE was crucified on the cross more than 2,000 years ago but now He is seated at the right hand of our Father in heaven.

I never knew or even thought about this in this way. I thought wearing a cross was in rememberance or respect. But, you're right, it could be as if we are flaunting his demise. Thank you for this informative hub.

I have worn a cross before until my eyes were open. a young man told me wearing that cross was the same as wearing a casket around my neck.
