Wiccan Spell for Mabon: Banishing Unwanted Thoughts

Mabon Magic

We’ve all had unwanted thoughts, haven’t we? Can’t get the person who dumped us out of our heads, can’t shake the anger we feel after an argument, can’t brush off the depression and bad outlook after a particularly big disappointment. Sometimes ritually acknowledging and ridding yourself of a symbol of those thoughts can help get rid of them.

Luckily for you, Mabon (which you can learn more about here) is the waning part of year when the light is overtaken by darkness. This day offers energies conducive to goals that include banishing and letting go of that which no longer serves you.

Use some of these methods to design a spell that will help you rid yourself of those unwanted thoughts that have been plaguing you.

This book is enchanting. What a great read for the holiday. Lots of fun ideas.

Choose Your Tools

There are actually a few different things you can use to banish bad thoughts. Consider these options:

  • Burning a black candle
  • Tossing a stone into a lake
  • Writing it on paper and burning it
  • Writing it on toilet paper and flushing it
  • Writing it on an apple and burying it

There is no right or wrong way, there is no better or worse way-- what matters is choosing whichever is more convenient and more meaningful to you.

Cast a Wiccan Spell

The Process

If you like, you can do this in a full-blown ritual, after casting a circle, calling the quarters and your Gods, but it's not necessary. You can also do this unceremoniously-- without a circle or formal ritual.

Take the tool of choice in hand-- your candle or stone, or-- if you're writing -- your paper or apple. Black is best because black will absorb the negativity from you, soaking it up like a sponge, so make sure to use a black candle, stone, or If you’re going to use something you’ll write it on, write it in black ink.

Hold the item and meditate on the feeling for a while, letting it build up in yourself. Usually we tell ourselves things like, "Don't let it upset you." At this point, you want it to upset you. You want to feel all those harmful emotions to stir and raise up those baneful energies inside of you. Let yourself get worked into a frenzy in any way you like—rant, cry, stomp around; raise that energy out of yourself until you’re positively vibrating and humming with it.

When you feel the energy has reached it's height, hold your object and just envision the feelings and energy draining into it. Literally force that negativity down your arm and into the object.

When you’re ready, get rid of it—light the candle, or toss the stone, throw the paper into a fireplace or into the toilet and flush, or throw the apple into a hole and cover it up.

The Aftermath

At that point you should try to relax and ground yourself knowing the energy will be dispersed and transformed by the universe. You may find yourself drained and tired afterwards-- that's fine. Try to rest and take a nap. You should feel more refreshed when you wake up.

Go replace the energy you spent by doing an activity that brings you joy or peace. Whether it’s watching your favorite movie, painting, going on a nature walk, savoring chocolate candies on your tongue—whatever—just allow yourself to recharge by taking in positivity to replace what you’ve given up.

I like how a spell brings mindfulness to a situation. It's like a kind of active meditation that trains your mind using words, symbols, and actions. I'll refer back to this one as well as the spell for balance (something else I desperately need)! You're a great teacher, Sage--thanks for sharing!

Thanks so much for your kind words. You are exactly right; a lot of people think magic means conjuring some external force to fix everything, but really it's bringing the right elements together to create transformation from within most of the time. I appreciate the comment!
