Haunted Places: Yorktown Memorial Hospital

Yorktown, Texas

Yorktown Memorial Hospital. “So that more may live longer.” That was the quote of the hospital. Unfortunately, it seems that this hospital saw more death then it did lives saved. After forty years of service, In 1988, the facility closed it’s doors.

In its 40 year history, the hospital has had about 2,000 deaths. As of today, it is one of the most active haunted locations in the United States. The Felician sisters of the Roman Catholic Church are the ones that planned and built Yorktown Memorial Hospital. It was a catholic hospital and some of the nuns were even nurses themselves.

What’s interesting about this place is that there is a balance of good and evil spirits. There has also been a good number of physical attacks on people here. People have reported being punched, kicked, slapped by unseen forces and have also been scratched. One of the ghosts is a man by the name of Doug Richards. Down near the basement at the end of the hallway is where he is said to be. Paranormal groups have asked for him by shouting his name. When they do, a large shadow figure walks across the hallway and disappears.

Although Yorktown Memorial Hospital closed down in 1988, it was opened up again for a short amount of time as a drug rehabilitation center. The nuns would close around 10:00 p.m. There was a door and a bell that was there just in case of an emergency. It said “Please ring in case of an emergency.” One of the nuns would stay up all night to listen for the bell. One night, a body was dropped off at the door. Either the people who dropped off the body didn’t ring the bell or the nun didn’t hear the bell ring. It’s believed that the man who was dropped off here was a man by the name of T.J. He died from a heroin overdose and is said to be one of the spirits that haunts the hospital.

A murder occurred down in the basement of the hospital as well. It was reported as a triple stabbing double homicide. A female counselor was escorting two male patients, when suddenly one of the male patients grabbed a hold of a knife and started stabbing both of them to death. Both of their blood is spread over the walls of the basement. a very scary EVP was captured on Ghost Adventures when Aaron Goodwin went down here by himself. The EVP said “Get to the hallway. The killer is coming.” Never a fun thing.

Up in the nuns corridors, the second floor of the Yorktown Memorial Chapel, there have been reports of a spirit of a nun who chokes people. She especially targets men, and anyone that has tattoos on their body.

Yorktown had a huge oil industry as well. It’s still rich in oil as of today. The hospital attracted many workers that were on those oil rigs. All kinds of accidents happened on these rigs. Men were killed, fingers, hands, and arms were cut off, and legs have been broken as well. A recipe that would definitely add to the hospitals hauntings.

The Yorktown Memorial Hospital has been through every kind of emotion you could possibly think of. It served as a portal to life and death. Then again, all hospitals do. Yorktown has seen it’s portal to life and death. However, the building seems to remain active with spirits.

I was misled by this one. I thought that it would be a historical tribute to the now defunct establishment but it turned out to be a Ghost Hunters hub!

I still like the tone of the article and the easy reporter style conversation I feel like I am having with the author as I read. Entertain if nothing else and voted up.

This was really interesting. I liked hearing about the specific people (or spirits?) who haunt it. I wonder if the fact that it was a Catholic hospital in any way affects the hauntings. Has the Catholic Church blessed the building since the ghost sightings were reported?

Thank you for reading Nelda N Hoxie! I've not heard of any blessings being done by the catholic church.

Ghost Adventures said that the killing in the basement was a love-triangle sort of thing. Is that incorrect? Is the story documented here found in any historical records? Thanks.

The show "stranded" talked about an entity they called the "demon". The participants were too freaked out to read about it so I never got to hear the backround story. Have you ever heard of this demon?

I also watched that episode and wondered what would make the spirit of the nun hang around. Could she be the demon because of what happened to her?

Kelly- Not sure if it was a love triangle.

Natasha- Looks like they got this demon in the basement where the double homicide happened. The Ghost Adventure Crew captured an EVP in that area saying "Get to the hallway. The killer is coming." I'm thinking it's the killer.

Jacquline Smith- It's possible since the demonic lures people in by taking the form of something that people would sympathetic to. In my opinion, I don't think so. I think the nun acts the way she does because that's how she was when she was alive. She could also still be around the hospital because she has a strong attachment to the Chapel.

This is just food for thought not a debate . Nuns vow their lives to Christ and know that their reward awaits them in Heaven. My question to you is why would she hang around unless she is angry with God for letting her be violently raped and murdered?

Perhaps there was some part of her that wasn't committed to God.

Despite what 'some' may openly critisize, my experience was a foolish 'prove Ghost Adventurers Wrong'. I initially believed Ghost Adventurers was a publicity stunt, later made fun of in a "South Park Episode". I drove all the way from Clifton, TX and arrived at the parking lot right at sundown. I drove alone, and from my personal experience, I felt choked, and attacked. After the experience, I've had nightmares and shared openly of 'my mistake'. Zack, Nick and Aaron show they put their souls, spirits and body on the line to collect the evidence of the spirits that remain. Being Jewish, my Rabbi did explain to be positive, and help me 'walk the line' to G-d. I have the shirt I was attacked in as a reminder that the spiritual reality exists. Yorktown, TX has a deep and blood filled history as well. DeWitt County's historical records also indicate a very 'blood stained past' being part of the War for Texas Independence and those who served in the Texas Army and counties named after them. Yorktown Memorial Hospital is in my understanding a "Beyond Scared Straight" facility that teaches, foolish acts won't be ignored. The Evidence and Spirits (good and evil) speak, teach, and preach for themselves. Just.. Don't Go Alone at Night!

I truly appreciate all this attention... letting the world know that I'm not just another old building... I've got history, and it's relevant to the lives of everyone, who experiences the thrill of seeing/feeling me up close and personal. Please check out my website: yorktownhospital.com and write to me at yorktownhospital@live.com. Thanks.

As always a concentration of death and injury in a building will create a powerful potential force for both good and evil. A hospital fits this bill exactly. Most of the patients will be in severe distress and many will die frightened and in pain. It is always a mistake to ask for a spirit by name as all and any spirits will answer and the most powerful will prevail.

Thanks again for a well written article. Voted up, awesome and interesting.

Kind regards Peter

Not to take any thing way from your beautifully written article but, what do you think Missouri's Hauntings?

I know of a place called Zombie Road that's supposed to be active. I believe the exorcist house is also in Missouri. I'm sure there are many other hauntings that Missouri has to offer. All of the states do.
