Are You Awake?

How do you know you are awake?

Are you awake? You don’t know that, until you come out of your dream; the dream looks as real as your waking life till the time you are in it. What is real and what is not? Welcome to the bizarre world of human mind!

Our brain is said to be the seat of intellect, learning, reasoning, thought process (subjective and objective), logic, will power and many other attributes which are mostly manifested on the conscious level; let’s not forget the unexplained mystical power which lies in the deeper layers of the sub-conscious mind and makes its presence felt in the form of intuition, visions, telepathy and paranormal behavior. Studies say that our brain retains images not only from our present lives but from our past lives as well, the snapshots of which sometimes get revealed to us in our dreams. Most of the times, we discard such dreams as meaningless, for the reason that the people and the locations we come across in our dreams, have (somehow) no nexus with our existing lives. A psychiatrist would probably relate it to our stressed and claustrophobic mind and would prescribe some stress buster exercises. How many of us do really know that our mind has the power to transcend the permissible limits of our consciousness and tread into the forbidden zone… our past life (or lives).

Are we born with a clean slate?

I always felt that the worst sarcasm of Nature was to strip off a human mind from the power of seeing the future and at the same time shutting the doors to all memories from the past lives; an ingenious way to hold a human mind in captivity of the present moment. Perhaps, that’s the way it was meant to be. Imagine how much chaos it would have led to, if we had retained all the memories from our past lives; we would have possibly lived as disconnected and confused souls if we had not been blessed with starting over with a ‘clean slate’. However, I am compelled to think sometimes, whether we are really given an opportunity to start with a clean slate, with no burden of past actions on our weary shoulders and no shadows of our misdeeds chasing us from our past. If that had been the case, then there would not have existed a word like ‘retribution’ or precisely, ‘Nature’s retribution’. Why do we say that we carry the burden of sins, committed by us in our past lives, until we compensate for them in our present lives? If that’s the way it is, then we are definitely not born with a clean slate. If our misdeeds are not wiped off from our ‘slate’ then, so are not our memories from the past. Seems logical!

Chakra Meditation--Awaken your third eye!

Know your past....make your future better.

If nothing is lost in this universe, scientifically proven which is, then why do we shy away from the fact, that memories from the past exist and if we don’t discard them as meaningless, they could remind us of some unfinished task or some barbaric act of ours which might have been the cause of misery to others? Who knows getting acquainted with our buried past may open new doors for us which may eventually help us to get reunited with our Higher Self. Isn’t it worth? It might help us to learn from our past mistakes so that we could make our future better. So, friends if you ever had any such inkling in the past or if it’s still continuing, don’t discard it; use the power of your mind through meditation and open new vistas for your yearning and longing soul. Your search might just end. May be it’s time!

My type of article, as I love these subjects. For those who haven't read the book, I  highly recommend Dr. Brian Weiss' "Many Lives, Many Masters", as this was a highly scientific head of the Mount Sinai psychiatric dept. in  Miami, Florida  who didn't believe in such things as pasts lives, until one of his patients regressed while under hypnosis spontaneously to a past life; this rocked his world and changed him forever. I am amazed at how some people can speak in foreign languages, ones that they have no knowledge of in the present life while remembering past lives.

Life is indeed filled with wonder....

Good hub!

God's gift is that one cannot predict his death.Cannot know his past birth.Cannot know what is next move is going to be.

God's gift is that man can understand and visualise by practice hsi future.

God's gift is that we can exchange our views.

This hub gives an excellant feeling.

Another thoughtful hub Anjali. I get some dreams it looks so real and like you said it is from the past maybe it is but would love to know what they mean :) I spoke to my father once, he talked about Saiva Siddhantha traditions, he is trying to translate it from Sanskrit to English. He told me that whatever we learn doesn't go waste, it helps whereever we go. It was interesting, but the life is so complex it is hard to visualize. He told me that Saiva Siddhantha has lot of life's answers, hope to read it some day.

Two of my three children recalled past lives when they were small, and both of those when a little bit older lapsed into speaking or dreaming in languages they do not currently know. Since growing up, they no long have recollection of those events, although they do remember the bit about the languages. Sometimes just before I fall asleep I 'remember' places I've never been. They are always the same places, they are familiar, and I've often wondered if they aren't memories from past lives.

Great hub! Like VioletSun, I love this kind of thing.

mikeq107: That would be an interesting topic (Are u living?). I'll think about it. Thx for your kind comments. I must say...your words are good enough for spreading positive energies; you don't have to be personally present. Something about the two of you!

cgull8m: I agree that the scripture you named has a very valuable info, if only you get time to read thru it. However, it is said that no one has the answers to your dreams; you have to figure it out yourself and your spirit will guide you, if you're persistent. To start with, learn 'opening chakras' technique from a person who knows the subject; the rest will follow. Thx for visiting.

Shirley Anderson: You're most welcome.

pgrundy: You're right. Children, sometimes, are seen to have memories from the past but as they grow, the memories fade away. It's normal. At times, the kids show special interests towards certain things which they might consider stupid as they become adults. The more you travel away from your past, more blurry it gets. It's important to open your 'chakras' to know the meaning hidden beneath the surface (of your dreams).Thx for reading this.

LondonGirl: You're welcome. Thx.

Great hub, Anjali! And I love the video you shared. In addition to the book VioletSun recommended, Journey of Souls explores the topic of past lives and supressed memories in a very compelling and affirming way. I've tried past life regressions with no luck, which makes me think I may be better of not knowing what came before. As you mentioned, the "clean slate" helps me retain my focus on the present--if my conscious mind was suddenly flooded by memories from past lives, I'm not sure how effectively I could live in the moment. Still, for some people, it seems looking backward can help clear up persistent pain or resolve destructive patterns.

Thanks for a great read and for providing yet another reminder about the gifts and virtues of meditation!

Guidebaba: 'Yoga' is yet another favorite subject of mine. I'll surely write about that too. Thx for visiting.

Melissa G: You're absolutely right. It's better if we don't have any memories from the past. It helps us focusing on our present, effectively. Yet, I feel past memories surface only when it's time to fullfil some Divine purpose..some unfinished task. It's a sort of 'Higher calling' reminding your spirit to move in a designated direction. Thx for visiting.

I love the title of this Hub. Actually, I am glad that I don't know the future! However, there have been a few times when I have felt a strong attraction to buildings or places - and then circumstances have brought me back there. Maybe that was due to subconscious intent, but perhaps it was because a part of my brain knew that I would be at that place (a lot) in the future.

Intriguing Hub. Thanks.

2Patricias: Human mind will always remain a mystery; the more you try to unfold it the more enigmatic it gets. No one knows the complete truth. All of us try to interpret things in our own way and most of the times we understand the meaning long after the events have occurred.

Jerilee Wei: You're right. Some deep seated fears and unexplained apprehensions truly have their roots in some untoward incidents which might have taken place in our past lives. At least this is what I strongly believe in. Thx a lot for visiting. Your mere presence is this hub is flattering.

I had an irrational fear of flying that I conquered some years back and I still have a fear of heights in some circumstances. I think this may be because of a past life in which I died after falling. I also have a lot of knowledge about nature and a love for animals and plants that showed itself when I was only a little boy, and this too I feel is from some past life and carried over.

anjalichugh profile image

anjalichugh 7 years ago from New York Author

Bard of Ely: I believe so. I've had similar experiences of knowing my past life and I did make a conscious effort to overcome my fears. Since I didn't take a professional help for this purpose, some areas remained untouched and still need to be cured. After so many years of inner conflict, I have learned to accept the 'truth' about the ongoing process of our soul and a need to compensate for our past actions. One thing more which I learnt was ...not to take anyone into confidence about the 'other worldly' things. Who wants to see those contemptuous and scornful eyes?

Hi Anjali,

Sometimes I am fooled in my dreams thinking I am awake but I know when I am actually awake because of the much greater detail that is missing in my dreams. I really like it when I know it's a dream and I can control it.

Is it possible though that when we are what we call (awake) it is simply just a higher level of consciousness but still a dream state? Just like when we go from a dream state to what we call awake maybe we can go from what we call (awake) to a higher level of consciousness.

I have often gotten the feeling like this time around I am going to make my life better almost like I've been here before. Maybe sometime you could share your inner conflicts from your past life. I find this very intriguing.

Take Care,

anjalichugh profile image

anjalichugh 7 years ago from New York Author

my-success-guru: You're absolutely right about the levels of consciousness. I feel that our waking life is only an extension of our dream world, just as you pointed out. It's kind of strange how two states of mind are different, yet similar. Speaking for past life, there are people who do not believe that a human being passes through the cycle of life and death innumerable times, perhaps only to finish some unfulfilled tasks / obligations. Some of us do carry memories of our past lives which appear as visions or flashes in our sleep. I personally feel that such visions should not be overlooked as mere dreams; they should be analyzed for understanding the reason why the subconscious mind lets you have a sneak peak in the forgotten past. Thx for your kind comments.

sandra rinck 7 years ago

I don't know about past lives. What if it's my very first? Anyways, when I was a kid I use to have a very abnormal sense of belonging or relationship to Egyptians. I never really knew why, past life perhaps, I could never really know for sure.

Excellent hub again Anja.. can I call you Anja?

anjalichugh profile image

anjalichugh 7 years ago from New York Author

Sandra: You can call me whatever you like to...I'll love that.

It is said that after a soul finds a body and takes birth, it retains certain memories from the 'past' for a few initial years of childhood and as the person grows up, the memories fade away. That's the way it is meant to be. This might explain your affinity for egyptians in your early years.  Our subconscious retains the memories which is why some of us , even when we turn adults, get flashes (like photo shoots) of certain events in our dreams about which we seem to have no clue. That's where our conscious mind sort of merges with the subconcious. Interesting. Isn't it?

sandra rinck 7 years ago

Yes, I also read once that 'fear" retention was a form of past life memories. Because most people usually have an abnormal fear of something that they have never experienced in this life, it leave some psychologist and scientist to believe that we are inheriting it from either our ancestors or it is a regresssion from a former life.

Yes it is very interesting. Funny enough, you were in my dreams last night. :D I guess you said something that really got in my head. Anyways, you were acting as a sort of guide in my dreams.

sandra rinck 7 years ago

Have you ever had a dream where you cannot move but feel wide awake. Everything is as it should be execpt for yourself? You can feel heat and cold, you can think, you can examine your home, you can do everything but move or speak.

anjalichugh profile image

anjalichugh 7 years ago from New York Author

Sandra: Yes, that's right. That explains why some people are unduly scared of water, fire, dogs, heights etc without even knowing why. I'm sure you might have read about people being cured by way of past life regression. The process simply helps them to go back to those moments where they faced those fears and helps them to confront the dangers instead of running away. It's sometimes feels like living in a matrix and its up to us how and when we are able to break away from it and be one with our consciousness.

Speaking of your dream, it makes me feel that you are spiritually very sensitive and are able to connect to people easily. I wish you could tell me what you saw. It gives me so much joy to know that I was trying to do something good (acting as a guide).

Yes, I've had such dreams many times. It feels like a dream till the time you're in it and the moment you regain your senses you realize that it was not a dream...quite like a trance. You want to move but you cannot, the heart beat increases and sometimes you might even sweat. When it happened with me, I almose froze and when I woke up(sort of) my whole body was pulsating. I couldn't explain it to anyone...still can't. It's so hard for me to explain what I was too scary for me to handle.

Feel free to come back as many times as you like. (hugs)

sandra rinck 7 years ago

Yeah, I have always wanted to try a past life regression theropy. Mostly because I just want to know everything I can about what I don't know I know. :D

In my dream you were like an angel. Not that you had wings or anything like that but you were you. Actually, you were you but you were also more like Eastern Indian. You didn't do much but you appeared before me and I walked towards you until you were by my side and then I passed you as you were pointing in the direction I needed to go.

Yes I have also felt that dream the same way. My heart rate increases and I fell like I am having a panic attack. Sometimes I don't want to go back to sleep because I am afraid I will go back to the same dream.

I did have a new interesting dream about a week ago. I dreampt about an old room in a house, it was antique-ish. There was a dresser that was cluttered up with old things and I started to move them away and behind it was a mirror.

Now, I have had other dreams about seeing myself in a mirror but this one seemed different in that I could recognize myself as I recognize myself in my daily life. It wasn't and OBE or astrol projection... just a simple dream that had a lot of significance.

I would like to hear about your dreams too if you can manage to relate them as best as you can. It isn't often I come accross people who have had the same experiences. Actually I didn't know until just a few days about that other hubbers were experiencing them too.

anjalichugh profile image

anjalichugh 7 years ago from New York Author

Hi Sandra: So glad to have you back. Let's start with your dream about that dresser cluttered with old things. As far as my knowledge goes, seeing clutter in dream may relate to the state of your mind which might be full of unresolved issues. May be its time to take care of those issues, one by one and clean up the place which is when you will be able to assess the situation in a better way and see yourself clearly as you saw yourself in the mirror. Seeing oneself in the mirror also means some act of bravery or courage which you might have shown or might show in near future while handling certain issues in your life. :)

Seeing me in your dream may have something to do with the influence my hubs might have had subconciously on you. Alternatively, it can also mean that you should read through eastern philosophy which might give you the answers you've been looking for.

As for my dream, I was lying on my bed at night and I saw a woman entering my room. She said something which I can't reveal and started pulling me by my feet. Seemed she wanted to pull me out of my bed. I struggled hard to free myself from her grip. I was scared to death and in that struggle, I woke up to realize that it was not real but I couldn't believe that it was not. I had heard her climibing up the staircase leading to my bedroom and I had heard the wooden floor creak as she stepped in to my room in the middle of the night. Even after I woke up, I could feel her energy around me. It still gives me chills when I think of it. There are many more experiences like the one I mentioned. I also, try to look for answers just like you do. :)

I am fascinated by your fertile brain. You have the nerve to "run with scissors." Perhaps as our "awareness" expands, our questions multiplies... Reading your blog was no "coincidence..." Your genuine concern and caring coupled with your mastery of "communicating" via numerous channels and levels is a great multiplier... Keep doing exactly what YOU want to do...

Thats what I say always...."there are no coincidences." There is a reason for all that happens around us. Speaking of learning, I would say..."we die learning" and that process of learning never ends, not even after leaving this world. I am passionate about certain things / subjects and try to make an effort to share it with others. If you like my way of communicating, I would say that I'm grateful.
