I often ask that qestion myself if your talking about dreams when you sleeping. Most of the time for me its been about healing inside and letting go of them. Moving on from the past and into the present moment. Sometimes we form attachments and never let go until we're ready too. They may have been someone we felt was important in our lives through growing and learning, or we loved for various reasons. Depending on the relationship and person only you can really know the answers.

It means you have not let go of those people who were part of your life previously.

Though it may seem that they are no longer apart of your life but your sub-conscious mind still can't let go.

Ask yourself if they are really gone or are you still attach to them?

It could mean that your subconscious is reminding you of unresolved matters concerning your dealings with that person.  Or, it may have no meaning at all, except that your mind wandered during a bout of shallow sleep.

Our brain is like a recorder it can record as far as our past, if we are sleeping it rewinds many things that happened in the past.

Or maybe sometime not to long ago or recently we had been thinking about a certain incident that happened in our life with that person that is no longer a part of us, when we are sleeping same thing could happen, the brain rewinds and bring those things back. Because we are sleeping and we are unconscious  we call that dream. But if we are awake we call it a flash back of memory
