Why is there usually a Bible in a drawer in hotel rooms?

When did this tradition start?  Why?  What about in countries outside of the U.S.?

When I was at secondary school in the late 50s early 60s we were all given a Gideon New Testament and told that Gideon provided these to all secondary school children and all hotel rooms in the counttry (UK)  Whether this continues, I don't know.

In India there are no Bibles in the drawers in hotel rooms. Nor are there any other holy books.

I feel in the U.S. people do things thoroughly well and completely up to the stage of repentance; At least that must be what the hotel owners may be intending. "In case you sin there is nothing to worry the remedy is always at hand in the drawer in the form of a copy of the Holy Bible."

It's okay why not read a chapter before leaving the hotel?

Gideons International got its start in 1898 putting Bibles in hotel rooms. Gideons expanded to over 190 countries giving out their Bibles.

Gideons are a religious group that can give their Bibles away for free, because they depend on donations to do and they receive donation from private sources and businesses.

Other than the Gideons, maybe to bring guilt feelings to those who are there for different reasons than an over night stay?

I have noticed that since I was a kid. Every hotel I go to has a bible in it. I think it is just a preference by the owner of the hotel. There are very few that do not do that anymore, they are mostly private or individual hotels though.
