If organized religions were abolished worldwide, would the chances for world peace increase?

If zealots and extremists couldn't use religion as an excuse for destructive actions, would world leaders have a better chance at reaching long-term peace agreements?

i don't think so.  People use religion as an excuse to fight.  If it wasn't religion, it would be skin color, or ethnicity.  Or, possibly class warfare.

No, the leaders (control freaks) would soon find a diferrent excuse to be masters of war to start flag waving and stirring up hatred.

Unlikely. Dissatisfaction and resentment/hate has its roots outside of religion. Religion just becomes the vehicle for expressing anger that comes from a feeling of lack, and seeing outside entities as somehow the cause of problems. Also, tribes and tribalism would still exist, without the wider tribe of a particular religion.

I believe there would be a world wide increase in violence and bloodshed, and many lost souls, with no reason to respect others or live. The world religions, though may be different in much of each's dogma or precepts, do provide more harmony and order than many realize. There are many who oppose others because of their faith, however, religion gives direction and a positive outlook for most who are faithful in their chosen religious beliefs.

Not at all. Religion is only one of the many different justifications for extremist. If you eliminated the base of all the faith in the world, I personally believe earth would become a very bad place to be. Faith is the backbone of the majority of good works in our society, and it would be counterproductive to peace to abolish those ideas. Peace is based in love, love is based in faith, faith is based in something greater than ourselves. Those are the bonds that make us all one big family. Without them, why bother with an idea such as "peace"?

A zealot who is willing to kill a person is willing to do it whether it is out of road rage or any other excuse. In general, religions push for a sense of morality - a certain measure of right and wrong. From my reading of Hinduism and Buddhism and Judaism and Christianity and Islam, (and others) all of them would encourage their followers to choose a path other than road rage.
I guess the other way to look at it is this: In the United States alone, religion of all kinds have been in a decline over the past 50-60 years. Are people more or less committed to peace with their neighbors now or then?

Abolition of the communal practice of religious faith, which is what banning organized religions means, implies that world peace would already exist. Specifically, it could not be done without a tyrannical global government, and any such worldwide state would impose its own form of peace by suppressing all dissent. Abolishing organized religions worldwide, therefore, could potentially follow world peace but, since it would be a result rather than a cause, would have no effect on the chances of it.

I suggest that the zealots and extremists are those proposing such a state of affairs. They are the ones pursuing a destructive agenda, even if not all of them are bright enough to understand what they do.

If religions were abolished secularsim would be the next religion... all world powers I strongly feel want..,,so that all the peoples of each nation could not have nothing to identify with but only the powers that be.

The abolishing of organized religions would become THE religion in order to bring about "peace;" which would have violence just below the surface waiting to break out, given the violent nature of mankind as a species.  Utopias have been written about for a long time, with movies like "Equilibrium," "Brave New World," "Logan's Run," and others showing it simply will not work.
Attikos had it right when he indicated that a totalitarian government would be required to enforce the peace; which is what the whole New World Order with the Anti-Christ worshiped and in charge is all about I'd say...one extremely organized religion replacing all the others prior to Christ's Return that settles the whole mess.

I'd say probably not. Most religions don't include conflict as part of their philosophy.

Those who use religion as an excuse would just find another excuse.

Religion is just like a double edged sword, works both ways. It has got the power to bind and  unite people and at the same time it is capable enough  to divide people. Its us to  use it for the benefit of mankind and society or get used by it creating barriers.

The answer to your question is no. Worldwide anarchy would prevail and the humanity will destroy itself. Religion does not cause wars, but people cause wars because of the interpretations given to religion. People would find other things to use for destructive actions. Race, national heritage and other excuses would arise and morality would decrease making it easier to do so.

Society can not exist without some type of religious outlet. It is a sociological fact. Even if all religion were abolished, people would still practice religion. Look what happened in the USSR and what his happening in China.

Peace would be further away by abolishing religion. In order to do so you would also have to abolish freedom all together. All societies would have to become policy states to monitor religious activity. War would rage around the world. Abolishing religion is just imposing another type of religious belief on people.

    † James 1 : 27 †

Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this,

"To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world."

Provided we survived the transition, humanity would then have a chance to progress exponentially...
