   Maybe when God told all believers that they were a royal priesthood, thereby doing away with the need for intercessors or other intermediaries.

   7Unto you therefore which believe he is precious: but unto them which be disobedient, the stone which the builders disallowed, the same is made the head of the corner,
   
   8And a stone of stumbling, and a rock of offence, even to them which stumble at the word, being disobedient: whereunto also they were appointed.
   
   9But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light;
   
   10Which in time past were not a people, but are now the people of God: which had not obtained mercy, but now have obtained mercy.
   
   Somehow the RCC managed to ignore this part of the instructions.

      I voted this answer up. My only addition here is that when this letter was written, it was not written to us. It was was written to the members of the Church of Christ in Rome. They were a royal priesthood. The letter had a particular audience.

      When this letter was written, the Church of Christ in Rome did not exist, and although it was written to a specific audience, we ARE that specific audience today! There has ONLY ever been one church, there may be denominations, but only ONE Church.

      yes, one body...All the denominations were the work of men! Some of these men may have had the desire to create something that they felt was more athletic and keep to the scriptures. Others may had there own agenda.

   Rodric, I always love your questions but can you provide some details on this one cause I am really confused.
   
   "authority to leave a church", I dont know of any biblical references of any specific denomination being the only church we could go to to serve The Lord. Therefor if no church is mentioned then you would not need the authority.
   
   "speak for him" not sure what your talking about there. give us an example of someone speaking for the Lord.

   When did God tell anyone to join the Catholic Church? I am sure the Catholic Church was not founded by Jesus or any of His apostles so it does not command any spiritual authority to decide anything on behalf of Christ. Following a religion of one's choice is one's fundamental right for which no authority is requires.
