I say Fear. The mind is who we are, and no matter the discussion, we are still left with knowing the way things are, our minds (whether agreed with or not), cannot be changed. The likelihood of physical attack over discussions (though it happens) is not an issue. Gun control is a major issue. It is a tangible item to which we can have access. But we wouldn't be so fixated on protection if we weren't so obviously aware of too many screwed-up people have them, too, including law enforcement. No one wants to think of some drunk or worse, attacking, or even a copy of some kind coming at us without due cause, and our having no defense. When I was attacked at 1 am by a no-gooder (ski mask, gloves, etc.) with my young son asleep, I could not have reached my bedside table for weaponry. ("Intruder" on hp). The cops said, "next time shoot the bastard, then drag him inside." (he was already inside) I really like d.williams' comment. I may be somewhat bohemian, but I couldn't stand having those cans around--great idea, just need camouflaging!
