The world we experience has been designed. It is so complex, and so many things work *against* life continuing to exist, much less coming to exist in the first place. My favorite brain bender goes something like this: That your mind can question God's existence, proves that he exists.
The universe can't generate a mind capable of dissecting the universe... it's kinda like a man learning brain surgery by practicing on himself. Eww. And, impossible.
People suffer in this world because, I'm sad to say, this is a fallen world. Adam and Eve gave up their rights to preserve its original perfection, and handed them over to Ha-satan, the accuser.
I must constantly remind myself, God rarely changes a person's *circumstance*, but he always changes a person's *conscience*. This means, God may not remove the suffering completely, but if you trust him, he will somehow ease the suffering.
Even if you don't notice (that is, you're still hurting), he is always working. I think when a loved one gets sick or dies, the people close to him suffer just as much, and God is there too.
Eventually this world will be perfect, or at least not-fallen, again. Then we'll all know the way God meant it to be in the first place.
