It seems to me that just about everything Jesus prophesied in Matt 23-24 has been fulfilled regarding the end of days aka the end of Israel. It was all wrapped up by AD 135. The sticking point is his coming again, though that's a matter of interpretation. The Jews expected his first coming as a warrior to release them from Rome, but when his arrival was completely different to their expectations, they missed it. I think futurist Christians are making the exact same mistake based upon popularist interpretations of Revelation.
For all we know he has already been and gone, if that's in fact what he meant. Why does he need to return at all? The work was finished on the cross and he said "over to you disciples" to clear up the odds and ends. If the New Jerusalem is the bride of Christ which we know is made of living stones, then that bride has been here and growing since his resurrection.
I can read Revelation and on the one hand interpret much of it as historical events that happened over 1800 years ago. On te other hand I am skeptical of its validity due to the Babylonian astrology elements, and for all we know it could simply be the magic mushroom influenced rantings of a nutty as a fruitcake hermit. Nobody knows for sure who this John was.
