We should pay far more attention to history than we do as history repeats all too often and sets the mold for tomorrow.
We Americans are so quick to play the victim when we find out that we are hated in the middle east.
But if we look at our behavior in the past it is glaringly clear where it comes from we are reaping what we had sewed. We need to look back not just a few years but decades. In Iran we took over when they finally threw out the British and helped put the Shah into power and kept him there for 40 years while we took their resources and gave back virtually nothing.
The Shah was every bit as bad as Saddam, a brutal dictator who ruled by terror and abuse.
When the people revolted in 1979 the US turned our favor to Saddam Hussein and Iraq with the mentality of “the enemy of my enemy is my friend”. It is little wonder that Saddam thought we wouldn't do anything when he invaded Kuwait.
In fact we have a long history of supporting horrible rulers so long as they paid by either giving us resources or fighting with others we dislike.
We trained Osama Ben Laden at the School of the Americas, where we trained a number of other terrorists, when Afghanistan was at war with the USSR. Most of the tactics that have been used against us are the very ones we taught, like IUDs.
Today the US is involved in over 200 countries doing the very same things that we shouldn't have been doing since before WWI.
We went to war in Vietnam in the 60s for the benefit of the arms industry and into virtually every military action since for the international corporations that either tear down or “rebuild” at our expense. (Think Blackwater & Haliburton)
We have learned almost nothing from our mistakes and today America is falling apart mostly due to foreign entanglements and a government that is for sale to the highest bidder. We even let a private international corporation have total control of our financial system to the extreme that they print our money and run our Mint.
We have become so short sighted that we can't see what happened to the USSR only 22 years ago is happening in the US today.
In short we need to look at yesterday to see tomorrow.
