    Is Paul justified in calling himself an apostle ?

    In Romans 1:1 Paul declares himself an "apostle" demonstrating that "revelation" is sufficient to walk in Biblical Authority. Since none of Jesus 12 exercised this type of authority is Paul justified in assuming the title apostle?

    Who knows what occurred in the conversation between Paul and Christ on the road to Damascus? I have no reason to doubt his claim and I see nothing in his teaching that is jarringly at odds with Christ's. Although I reject the notion that his letters are scripture, as I believe he would, they are very useful for teaching.

    In the Bible Jesus called twelve to be his representatives - "apostle" means someone "sent out". One of them was Judas, who died. The remaining eleven then chose one to replace him, making the group twelve again.
    But in early Christian times the word apostle was also used loosely about persons not in the group of twelve, like modern "missionary" - which also means someone sent out, only that is Latin while apostle is Greek. Paul was an apostle in this sense.
    In Catholicism and some parts of Protestantism the Bishops (Catholic meaning, not Mormon) are the successors of the twelve. So in that sense Jesus has far more than twelve apostles.
